Chapter 2:

Classroom Chaos

Caffeine Cupid: a love brewed in coffee and chaos

As my homeroom teacher, Yui Takahashi, read my essay aloud, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. I had poured my heart and soul into crafting the best piece of writing in my entire existence. But little did I know that my perspective on something serious had gone awry, veering into the realm of virtual reality gaming. Yui sensei's reaction was akin to a volcano about to erupt, and I braced myself for the impending explosion.

"Say Karma, what did I ask you to write?" Yui sensei inquired with a weary hand on her head.

"An essay on your perspective on something serious," I replied innocently.

"And what did you write?" she sighed, knowing the answer all too well.

"I simply wrote why VR gaming should be a major part of the high school education curriculum," I declared with all the confidence of a pro gamer.

Yui sensei facepalmed in exasperation. "I should have specified about this essay being serious and not include stuff like games. Serious in bold," she muttered under her breath.

"But sensei, I wrote it seriously!" I protested, feeling a tad indignant.

"Go back to your seat, Karma!" she exclaimed, and I slumped back with a sigh.

I couldn't help but fume inwardly at Spring Fields High's lack of appreciation for the gaming world. If only I had enrolled in a school with a top-notch gaming club as part of its co-curricular activities. Gaming is more than just a hobby; it can be a legitimate profession! Well, not that I'd make it to pro gamer status, but still, it's a passion of mine. There's something calming about leveling up and conquering tough virtual bosses.

As I daydreamed about virtual realms, Yui sensei's wrath shifted to Cherry Sinclair, the caffeine junkie and trouble magnet. Yui sensei's patience seemed to be running on fumes as she yelled at Cherry about her essay, which apparently turned into a thesis on why humans are terrible. I couldn't help but chuckle at the absurdity of it all.

"Shut up Karma. You are the same," Yui sensei exclaimed, her eyes rolling like a pair of frenzied dice.

“You act like you’re better than everyone else, like you know everything in the universe. And Sinclair, you are the complete opposite, causing chaos wherever you go. Why can't you two be more ordinary?” Yui sensei scolded, making Cherry and me respond in unison, "But we are normal!"

The class continued, and Cherry was busy tapping away on her phone while stuffing her face with chocolate. I couldn't help but observe her clumsiness from the corner of my eye. A strange mixture of annoyance and curiosity washed over me.

"What's with the staring, Nerd Dynamo?" Cherry shot back, her mouth full of chocolate.

"Nerd Dynamo? What?" I stuttered, caught off guard.

"What? That's what you are. And stop staring, you jerk. It's creepy," Cherry retorted, unamused.

I couldn't believe my own outburst. "I-I was not staring. Who the hell would stare at an ugly hag like you, huh?" I inwardly berated myself for the uncalled-for insult.

"Yeah, yeah. Your eyes say otherwise," Cherry smirked.

I scolded myself in my mind, "What were you thinking, Karma? Staring at her like that? Are you an idiot? She's... well... not your favorite person."

Soon, Yui sensei announced the group project, and my heart leaped at the thought of working with my best friend, Tatsuya. But alas, Yui sensei had other plans, pairing Cherry and me together. My dreams of an awesome project with Tatsuya came crashing down.

"No way!" I exclaimed, jumping up from my seat.

"Sit down, Karma. I won't listen to any excuses. You two will work together as a team," Yui sensei declared with a mischievous glint in her eyes. "If anything, it'll be one disaster less for me, and I'm curious to see how your project turns out."

Great, just great. I thought I was trapped in an endless loop of bizarre situations with Cherry, but now we had to tackle a project together. Class dismissed, and Yui sensei exited the room, leaving Cherry and me to contemplate our fate.

As the classroom emptied, leaving only Cherry and me to ponder our fate, I couldn't help but feel like a hapless protagonist in a wacky sitcom. You know, the kind where the universe loves to throw ridiculous curve-balls at the main character just for laughs? Yep, that's me - Karma Nakamura, destined to navigate the wild roller-coaster ride that is Cherry Sinclair.

But little did I know, my trusty best friend, Tatsuya, was about to drop a truth bomb on me. Oh boy, he wasn't holding back either!

"Hey, Karma, you better brace yourself for this wild ride, my dude. You're partnered up with Cherry, the reigning queen of boy-rejecting and caffeine-chugging! Man, I am so jealous of you. Guys would kill just to be with her."

"Jealous? Jealous of what, Tatsuya? Dodging caffeine spills and evading trouble magnets?" I scoffed.

But Tatsuya wasn't having any of it. He gave me a stern look, like a concerned parent trying to set their child straight.

"Karma, my man, you need to lift your head out of those virtual realms once in a while. Boys line up like the latest gaming console release, and Cherry turns them down like she's on a perpetual caffeine high!"

Wait, what? Cherry, the caffeine queen, had a fan club of boys vying for her attention? I was in total shock, like discovering that the school mascot was secretly a celebrity in disguise!

"Come on, Karma, loosen up a bit!" Tatsuya urged. "It's like you're in your own bubble, oblivious to the chaos around you. You need a taste of the unpredictable."

Well, he wasn't entirely wrong. I did tend to immerse myself in virtual realms, seeking solace in gaming's orderly worlds. But Cherry's chaos was a whole other dimension! It was like discovering that the school principal moonlighted as a professional break-dancer!

As we continued our banter, I heard a familiar sound - the triumphant melody of a victorious game level. My eyes darted towards the source, and there she was - Cherry, her fingers tapping away conquering the virtual realm with ease.
