Chapter 5:

Teenage Feelings and Awkwardness

Caffeine Cupid: a love brewed in coffee and chaos

Ah, lunch break—the sacred time when students unleash their inner clowns and let loose the giggles and guffaws that had been pent up during hours of classroom boredom. And there we were, me, Satoshi, and Tatsuya, yukking it up over some ridiculous skateboard mishap of one of our classmates.

"Guess what, when he was trying to impress his crush with a cool skateboard trick, he ended up face-first in a puddle!" Satoshi proclaimed.

"Ha! And the cherry on top was his dog barking at him like he's the world's worst skater!" Tatsuya added, barely able to catch his breath between bursts of laughter.

The cafeteria echoed with our guffaws, and I couldn't help but join in. It was nice to take a break from my usual brooding and enjoy some quality time with my goofball friends.

As we wrapped up lunch and I wiped the tears of laughter from my eyes, I noticed something strange—I was actually paying attention to the people around me. Normally, I'd be lost in my own little bubble, but today, I was catching glimpses of the school's rich tapestry of personalities. Maybe my social skills weren't as rusty as I thought.

Feeling the need for fresh air, we ventured to the rooftop. The wind greeted my face like a long-lost friend, and I couldn't help but feel rejuvenated. I leaned against the boundary, enjoying the view while Satoshi and Tatsuya continued their lively chatter.

Then, my eyes spotted something out of the ordinary—a tuft of pink hair peeking from behind a corner. My curiosity got the better of me, and like a stealthy ninja, I sneaked towards the mysterious sight.

And there she was—Cherry, lost in her own world, munching on her lunch with earphones plugged in. It was like she was dancing to her personal symphony. But why was she hiding away on the rooftop? Maybe she was a lone wolf, a solo artist in the chaotic symphony of high school life.

I couldn't tear my eyes away from the sight of her. Her pink hair swayed in the breeze like cherry blossoms, her bangs casting playful shadows over her face. Those captivating ocean-blue eyes seemed to hold secrets, dreams, and perhaps a pinch of mischief.

Suddenly, she noticed me standing there like a statue, and our eyes locked. She screamed and stumbled back, leaving me to feel like a bumbling fool.

"Karma, you idiot! What are you doing here and since when?" Cherry's voice trembled with surprise and breathlessness.

My mind went into overdrive, trying to come up with an excuse for my unexpected appearance. "Um, well, I just... uh..."

"We have been here since quite some time. 20 minutes at least," Tatsuya chimed in, the smirk on his face suggesting he was enjoying every moment of my discomfort.

Wait, what? Did I seriously stare at her for that long? Great, just great. Way to make things even more uncomfortable.

"No, no, I didn't!" I protested, feeling like a tomato in the spotlight.

As Cherry's confusion mounted, I couldn't bear the awkwardness any longer. "We just came up here for some fresh air, that's all. Don't mind these clowns," I said, nodding towards Tatsuya and Satoshi.

But Tatsuya wasn't about to let me off the hook that easily. "Oh, I think I know why Karma was staring so intently," he teased, his eyes glinting with mischief.

"I was not staring! Can we just drop this already?" I grumbled, feeling my embarrassment reach record levels.

I couldn't let them keep fanning the flames of embarrassment. "It's nothing, seriously," I blurted out before making my hasty escape, dragging the two mischievous idiots along.

Back in the classroom, my friends were having a field day with my newfound flustered state. "Aww, is my baby shy?" Tatsuya cooed, poking fun at my crimson cheeks.

"Shut up, Tatsuya!" I snapped, feeling like a tomato ready to explode.

"I'm telling you, bro, he's starting to fall for her. Did you see how he was staring at her while she was eating?" Satoshi teased, a twinkle of mischief in his eyes.

"I don't like her, you dumbass. I was just... I was... uh..." My eloquence seemed to have taken a leave of absence.

I went about the rest of the school day with a red face and a million thoughts racing through my mind. Why did I have to act like such an idiot in front of her? Cherry probably thinks I'm a total weirdo now.

The day was far from over, and there was more awkwardness to come. The final bell rang, and I went home, relieved that there was no soccer practice to face.

I headed home and soaked in a hot bath to relax my aching muscles. But no amount of hot water could wash away the lingering embarrassment. The only solution was to bury myself in the project work and hope that time would heal the cringe-worthy memories.

As I set up the materials for the project, Alyssa popped into my room with her usual inquisitiveness. "What are you doing, onii-chan? Is someone coming home?"

"Yeah, a classmate. I am working on a project with her," I mumbled, trying not to make a big deal out of it.

"A girl? Wow, it's the first time you're bringing a girl home!" she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

Oh, the joys of a younger sibling—always ready to make a mountain out of a molehill. I sighed, bracing myself for the rollercoaster ride ahead. "It's just for the project, Alyssa. Trust me, she's a handful. I hope I survive this ordeal."

"Huh? I see." Alyssa looked genuinely perplexed, probably trying to figure out why a simple project could cause such distress.

"I'm going downstairs to get some juice," Alyssa declared, and with that, she vanished like a whirlwind.

"Sure. Don't break anything," I mumbled half-heartedly, too focused on organizing my papers to realize my little sister's potential for mischief.

Ding Dong

The doorbell chimed, and with a deep breath, I went downstairs to face my project partner, Cherry. As I opened the door, there she stood in a blue dungaree and a white top, hair tied up in a neat bun. My mind couldn't help but freeze for a moment at the sight of her. It was like the universe conspired to make her look even more beautiful than before. My heart did a somersault, and I quickly shook off the feeling.

"Welcome, Cherry. Come inside," I managed to say, trying to act normal.

"Um, hi," she said awkwardly. I could tell she was nervous too.

We made our way upstairs, but before we could start, Alyssa appeared out of nowhere. “"You're the snacks nee-chan! How did you find my house?"

Alyssa ran towards her to jump into her arms and pulled her into a hug like a long-lost friend. And that's when the unexpected happened—Cherry slipped and fell.

"The hell just happened?" I muttered to myself, trying to comprehend the whirlwind of events.

"Ow ow ow," Cherry winced, rubbing her head.

"Huh? You're the kid from last night," Cherry said, recognizing Alyssa from their encounter.

Okay, now this was beyond bizarre. I had no idea these two knew each other, and Alyssa was acting like they were the best of buddies.

Alyssa, as nonchalant as ever, responded with a beaming smile. "Thank you, nee-chan, for yesterday. And for the snacks too. I decided to be a good girl and made up with my brother."

Cherry's eyes darted between Alyssa and me, clearly taken aback. "You're her brother?" she asked, her surprise evident.

"You know my onii-chan?" Alyssa added to the amusement.

"Uh, well, sort of. We're classmates," Cherry replied, looking as bewildered as I felt.

Okay, this day had officially taken a wild turn. The project was now the least of my worries.
