Chapter 47:

The Sight

How Not to Be a Medium

Tristan disappeared somewhere without telling me what he planned to do during this time. I didn't blame him, I didn't want to control him. When he finally showed up, graciously just before departure time, Zoey had a momentary breakdown and wanted to cancel the meeting. I tried to calm her down and assure her that I would be by her side the whole time. Tristan looked at us speculatively, then said we both looked lovely. My friend smiled at him, she sensed him almost unmistakably and thanked him with a faint smile.

"He's also very nervous," my boyfriend whispered to me, I rolled my eyes, Zoey didn't hear him anyway, only I had to be careful with it.

"I guess that's a good sign," I said.

"For a doctor, his hands were shaking badly when he was tying his tie," Tristan said maliciously. “I don't know if such a man should be responsible for saving human lives."

I shot him an angry look, which made him momentarily offended, and chased Zoey out. Thomas invited her, well us to a restaurant overlooking the lake for lunch. I liked this choice, we will be in an elegant place, surrounded by people, so he will have to behave. Although I wasn't worried, I really trusted Cee Cee and Thomas already made a good impression on me at the exhibition.

At the restaurant, we were greeted by a nice waitress and asked for the name under which we had the reservation, Zoey gave it in a nervous voice. I patted her shoulder reassuringly and gently pushed her to follow the woman. I knew it wasn't fear of Thomas himself, but that my friend was simply afraid of falling in love again, and her nerves stemmed from the feeling that it was already headed that way.

The doctor was already there, and I could see how he gasped at the sight of Zoey, but he composed himself quickly and came over to us. Like a gentleman, he kissed our hands and pulled out the chairs for us. Tristan just snorted at that and muttered under his breath that he could do it too.

"I didn't know that in our city, is a restaurant with such a nice view," Zoey said delightedly, staring at the window, she didn't even notice that we were handed the menu.

"I was hoping you'd like it," he said nervously but politely. I wanted to laugh a little inside myself, I didn't expect such emotional behaviour from a grown man, a few years older than us. Apparently, Zoey was too dazzling in his eyes. "Too bad your boyfriend couldn't join us," Thomas said to me.

"Like it's the first time something falls out for him," I said, offended. "I don't know why I still put up with this."

Tristan kicked me in the ankle for that, so I hit him back even harder. Zoey gave us both a reproachful look. Still, she wanted to make a good impression on him, I smiled to myself. We ordered the dishes and that was pretty much my part, I could only watch as the two quickly went from awkward conversation to a lively, laughing discussion. I participated in it from time to time, at the same time wanting to show them that I do not feel excluded and just enjoy their company.

I knew I wouldn't be needed at the next meeting, and I wasn't right after it anyway. Thomas suggested a walk, I said I was tired, but if Zoey wanted to walk with him, she was free to go.

"Do you want Tristan to watch over you, or anyone else?" I asked in a whisper as we got dressed.

"No, I think it'll be fine," Zoey replied, blushing.

"I'm on call if needed," I reminded her. "Don't be afraid to ask for help. Me and the ghosts are on your side."

"I have to admit, they go well together," Tristan muttered as we headed our way, leaving the lovers alone.

"Yes," I nodded. "I believe she'll be happy now."
