Chapter 48:

The Girl

How Not to Be a Medium

I stretched and reached for the phone, this shift was extremely calm, without any extraordinary drama. I had three more appointments. Cee Cee sat next to her and she was bored, she lived in unexpected situations. She could predict a lot, so only such things gave her some excitement in the afterlife.

"I wonder if the other meetings will also be so predictable?" asked the fairy loudly and pretended that looking at her own fingernails was extremely entertaining.

"I don't mind it," I replied. “Sometimes I deserve a little less hard time in this job, too."

I heard a noise behind the door and after a while, a child's head peeked out from behind the curtain. A little girl looked at me, and I at her, and for a moment I didn't know what to do. I didn't remember having an appointment with the baby.

"How can I help you?" I asked and told Cee Cee to check if there was an adult with her.

"You don't look like a fairy," the girl replied once she had looked at me.

"I did say looks were important," my spiritual guide interjected. "But you've always been skeptical about it," she added, offended. "There is no one with the little one."

"Did you come here alone?"

"No," the girl replied, rocking on her heels. "Mom's in the store next door." Suddenly, new energy entered the little girl, she walked over to my table and threw a few changes on the counter. "I have money, I want to talk to my grandmother."

Cee Cee and I looked at each other and tried wordlessly to figure out what to do with the child's request. I pushed the money back and said she didn't have to pay but she would have to have an appointment. I would have helped her anyway, but I wanted to buy some time. It was a strange situation and I didn't quite know how to handle it without alienating the child.

To my surprise, the girl placed a piece of paper in front of me with the address and time written on it. I raised my eyebrows, maybe someone helped her, or a parent who didn't believe in my abilities actually sent her here so he wouldn't bother him anymore.

"I want to talk to Grandma," she demanded again and clambered into the chair next to me.

"Do you have anything that belonged to your grandmother?" I asked, trying to focus.

"Could be the bracelet she gave me?" she asked, rummaging through her small purse.

"Of course."

I extended my hand, and the girl reluctantly gave me such a precious object. I squeezed the beautiful silver jewelry in my hand and immediately felt that it was connected to someone. I closed my eyes and concentrated, asking for the first thing that the spirit in question would appear beside me of its own accord. Quite quickly an older woman came quickly and stared anxiously at the girl.

"Sarah, what are you doing here alone?" she asked, trying to touch her arm.

I grabbed her hand so as not to expose the child to that unpleasant feeling of having 'direct' contact with a ghost. The woman looked at me surprised, I shook my head, and she got saddened, staring at her granddaughter.

"Your grandmother is already here, what would you like to say to her?"

"Prove it," demanded the girl. "I don't see her, how do I know you're not lying? Say something only Grandma would know."

"A swallow-shaped birthmark on the right shoulder blade," the woman replied.

I repeated her words and Sarah finally trusted me, she suddenly started to cry so I went over to her and hugged her tight. I didn't think it would help her much, but I couldn't leave her like this.

"I miss my Grandma," the little girl whispered.

"Grandma misses you too," I relayed the woman's words. "And she's very sorry she wasn't a good enough guardian angel for you. From now on, she will always be with you."
