Chapter 8:

Texting Duels and Mischievous Smirks

Caffeine Cupid: a love brewed in coffee and chaos

As I strolled towards school, Tatsuya swooped in like a mischievous wingman, slinging his arm over my shoulder.

"Hey man. Did you survive yesterday?" he quizzed with that signature smirk of his.

"It was okay, I guess," I replied with a dumb grin stretching across my face.

But oh boy, I couldn't help reminiscing about yesterday night. My mind kept replaying the events of last night. It was a blast, no doubt about it.

"You are smiling like a creep, bro. Did something good happen?" Tatsuya probed, raising his eyebrows suggestively.

With Tatsuya, secrets were useless. So, I spilled the beans and told him everything about Cherry, the texting mishap, and the crazy family dinner. He had this way of making me spill the tea, or in this case, the boba.

"So after all, the number came into use, huh? But I really didn't expect you to text her yesterday itself. Damn, you are desperate, aren't you?" Tatsuya teased, and I had to roll my eyes at his banter.

Soon, we reached the classroom just before homeroom was about to start. But ugh, today was one of those ultra-boring days.

"Man, I feel so bored today. What should I do?" I mumbled to myself, contemplating my options like a hero choosing their next quest.

Crime Quest was tempting, but alas, I couldn't unleash the epic sound effects in the middle of class without becoming an instant meme. So, that was a no-go.

I glanced around, hoping someone else was sharing my plight. Tatsuya was busy charming some girl, Satoshi was practically drooling in his dreamland, and Cherry was engrossed in her phone.

Should I dare to text her? Ah, what the heck. She seems bored too. What's the worst that can happen?

"Bored?" I stealthily texted her.

"Very much," she replied, and we exchanged knowing glances, giggling like a pair of troublemakers.

"Man, why does Haru-sensei have to be boring? I'm gonna fall asleep like the rest," I texted, complaining about our seemingly endless class.

"I feel your pain lol. I was about to join the snooze fest too," she replied, and I couldn't help but imagine her stifling yawns just like me.

"But look at Daichi," she continued.

"Yeah, all attentive in class and answering back to sensei too," I replied, rolling my eyes. Daichi Kurogane, the overachieving wizard. I swear, he and I were like magnets repelling each other.

"Ideal student, isn't he," Cherry remarked, and I could already predict where this was going.

"I hate that guy. Always comes to me to show off his gaming ranks and shit, even when I have a higher rank than him. Goddamn narcissist," I vented, feeling like I could write a whole thesis on why Daichi and I were rivals to the end.

"Aren't you the same, Karma? You two can be lost brothers, you know?" Cherry playfully jabbed, and I couldn't resist the bait.

"Cherry, you little shit, I am not his brother!" I blurted out loud, forgetting that we were still in the middle of class.

"Karma, what the hell do you want now?" Haru-sensei glared at me, sensing an incoming storm of chaos.

Oh, why do I always pick the worst timing?

"Sensei, I-I," I stuttered, trying to come up with an explanation that wouldn't land me in detention.

"Get out of the class, Karma. I don't wanna deal with you for another second," Haru-sensei declared.

Outside the classroom, I fumed like a ninja plotting his revenge. I typed back, my fingers dancing over the phone screen with a devilish grin on my face.

"Oh, Cherry, you've just stepped into a warzone. Prepare to face the consequences of your actions!"

Her response came back lightning-fast, as if she had been eagerly waiting for my comeback. "Oh, I'm quaking in my boots, little boy! Bring it on!"

Game on, Cherry! Game on! This was turning into a texting battle royale, and I was the king of comebacks. I could feel the mischievous energy radiating from my phone, and it was electrifying!

I looked up from my phone, met her gaze, and gave her the most mischievous smirk I could muster. It was like I shot an arrow of embarrassment straight at her heart, and she turned into a flustered tomato in seconds. Ha, gotcha!

Even though I was outside the classroom, I could practically feel the heat radiating from her blush. Oh, this was better than Crime Quest! I had just discovered Cherry's weakness, and I had the ultimate prankster's weapon.

Tatsuya, looked at me, then Cherry, and back at me, trying to piece together the puzzle. But he soon caught on, giving me a knowing smile in my direction. He knew it was time for some epic mischief, and he was ready to join in the fun.

The tension was palpable like the atmosphere before an epic showdown. I glanced at Cherry, and she met my gaze, both of us locking eyes in a battle of wills. But behind that competitive spirit, there was something else—something that I couldn't quite put my finger on.

As the day went on, the texting duel continued, each message more outrageous than the last. We traded jokes, memes, and witty retorts like seasoned comedians. The rest of the class couldn't help but notice our antics, and soon enough, we had an audience of amused onlookers.

By the end of the day, we had both surrendered to laughter and decided to call a temporary truce. The battle was over, but the war was far from finished. Who would emerge victorious in this game of wits and banter? Only time would tell.

But one thing was for sure: my initial perception of Cherry had done a complete 180. She was no longer the girl I wanted to avoid, but rather a formidable rival and an intriguing enigma. And as I caught her stealing glances at me with a hint of a smile, I couldn't help but wonder if there was something more to this texting showdown than meets the eye.

Who knew that boredom and a mischievous spirit could lead to such unexpected adventures? The day had started with a punishment, but it had turned into a hilarious battle of wits, and maybe, just maybe, the beginning of something more.
