Chapter 4:

Chapter 4: Surprises and, a wanderer?

Honō no Hikari: A Quest of Desire and Revenge

The sun began to set, casting a golden hue over the tranquil surroundings of the Armstrong mansion. Shinku and his loyal companions gathered in the elegant study, the scent of old books and polished wood filling the air. The battle against Diana and Zena had left them physically and emotionally drained, but their determination burned brighter than ever.

Iris sank into one of the chairs in the study, exhaustion evident on her face. "I can't believe we made it out alive," she murmured, her voice filled with relief.

I nodded, my celestial powers still faintly glowing in my eyes. "Indeed. It was a tough battle, but we managed to come out on top. We've proven once again that we won't be defeated so easily."

Reijy wiped the sweat from his brow, a grin spreading across his face. "Well, it's not over yet. We've got a world to save, after all. But for now, how about we head back and report what happened?"

Agreeing with Reijy's suggestion, I stood up from my seat, feeling the weight of the recent battle on my body. "Yes, let's gather our strength and prepare for the next step. We need to uncover the truth behind my origins and fulfill the prophecy."

Our group made its way out of the study and back through the magnificent halls of the Armstrong mansion. As we walked, the warm glow of the setting sun painted the walls with vibrant hues of orange and pink, adding a touch of serenity to the otherwise eventful day.

The next morning, the sun rose on a new day, signalling the beginning of another chapter in their journey. I found myself awake; my mind still filled with thoughts of the battles we had fought. I rose from the comfortable bed and dressed quickly, ready to face the day.

Just as I was about to leave my room, there was a knock on the door. Pia greeted me with a warm smile. "Good morning, Shinku. I hope you slept well. I have someone I'd like you to meet."

Curiosity piqued, I followed Pia down the hallway and into a spacious room. There, standing by the window, was a woman with platinum blonde hair and emerald, green eyes. Her presence exuded elegance and finesse. It was clear she was no ordinary person.

"Pia, who is this?" I asked, a hint of intrigue in my voice.

Pia introduced her with a soft smile. "Shinku, I'd like you to meet Yvette. She will be your guide to your new mansion."

Yvette extended her hand gracefully, her voice carrying an air of refinement as she greeted me. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Shinku. I've heard so much about your incredible journey and the battles you've faced."

Returning her handshake, I couldn't help but be captivated by her presence. "The pleasure is mine, Yvette. Pia has mentioned that you'll be guiding me in this new mansion. I'm grateful for your assistance."

Yvette's eyes glinted with a mixture of wisdom and determination. "I assure you, Shinku, it will be my utmost pleasure to support you on this path. The mansion holds many secrets and a rich history, and I'm here to help you unravel them."

As I absorbed Yvette's words, a familiar figure peeked out from behind Yvette. Her vibrant purple robes flowing gracefully with each step. Yvette released my hand and turned her attention towards the window, a serene expression on her face. "Before we delve into the details of your new mansion, allow me to introduce someone very special to me."

Curiosity welled up within me as I wondered who this person could be. Just then, a young girl emerged from behind a bookshelf, her delicate frame and pastel green hair catching my attention. Her light pink eyes held a hint of mischief and sadness, giving her an air of mystery.

Yvette's smile widened as she reached out to the girl. "Shinku, I'd like you to meet my daughter, Mediell."

The girl, Mediell, approached cautiously, her gaze fixed upon me. Her presence seemed to hold a mix of melancholy and compassion. I could sense the depths of her emotions, and it intrigued me.

"Hello, Mediell," I greeted, my voice soft and welcoming. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

Mediell's pink eyes flickered with curiosity and vulnerability. "Hello, Shinku," she replied, her voice carrying a gentle, yet quiet tone laced with hints of longing and kindness. "I've heard about your bravery and the battles you've fought. It's an honour to properly meet you."

I smiled warmly at her, sensing a kindred spirit within her. "The honour is mine, Mediell. I remember briefly seeing her the other day and I heard from Rei that you are extremely incredible during the investigation."

A soft blush tinged Mediell's cheeks, and she glanced towards her mother, a hint of playfulness in her eyes. Yvette chuckled softly, her eyes filled with adoration as she looked at her daughter. "Well, well. I didn’t know you had quite the silver tongue on you, Shinku. I might just have to keep a closer eye on you." Shifting her eyes back and forth between me and Mediell.

“Mother, stop it! It’s embarrassing!” Mediell closing her eyes and puffing up her cheeks, while lightly hitting Yvette.

As I watched the exchange between Yvette and Mediell, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of warmth and belonging. It was as if fate had woven our paths together, connecting us in ways that felt both extraordinary and comforting.

Yvette turned her attention back to me, her voice filled with a nurturing tone. "Shinku, I hope you get along with Mediell more from now on. This girl doesn’t have many friends around her age, and it worries me."

“Of course. I’m sure that Rei would love to have another friend as well.” Smiling happily, as Mediell blushed even more now hiding her head behind Yvette.

Sharing this light-heartening moment, Pia's voice broke the silence. "Shinku, we should head to your new mansion. There are some surprises waiting for you there."

Surprises? My curiosity piqued even further as I followed Pia, Yvette, and Mediell out of the Armstrong mansion and towards a carriage waiting at the front gates. The carriage was adorned with intricate carvings and symbols, a testament.

As Yvette and Mediell led me through the bustling streets of the town, my mind was filled with anticipation. The king had bestowed upon me a new mansion, and I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like. We walked through the town, passing by the market stalls and the colourful shops, until we reached the outskirts where the mansion was located.

The mansion stood tall and imposing, its grandeur evident in every detail. Yvette opened the massive double doors, and as I stepped inside, my eyes widened in surprise. Mana and Pia stood before me, dressed in elegant maid uniforms. I couldn't believe my eyes. They were going to be my new maids, along with Reijy and Gavrail.

"Welcome, Master Shinku," Pia greeted me with a warm smile, her blue eyes sparkling with mischief. "We're honoured to serve you in your new mansion."

I blinked, struggling to find the right words. "I... I didn't expect to see you here. I thought you were assigned to another mansion."

Pia's smile widened mischievously. "Well, circumstances have changed, and we've been reassigned to serve you, Master Shinku. We hope to provide you with the best care and assistance."

I glanced at Mana, who stood beside Pia, her expression serene yet enigmatic. "And you, Mana? How did you end up here as well?"

Mana's voice was calm and measured. "It seems fate has brought us together once again, Master Shinku. We will do our utmost to ensure your comfort and satisfaction."

I couldn't help but feel a mix of gratitude and curiosity. It seemed that destiny had intervened, bringing these two intriguing maids back into my life. I knew there was more to their stories than met the eye, but for now, I would have to be patient and let time reveal its secrets.

A few days had passed since that surprising encounter, and I found myself running errands to move some of my belongings. Pia accompanied me, her composed presence a comforting presence by my side. As we walked through the bustling streets, a commotion caught our attention nearby.

Intrigued by the commotion, we hurried toward the disturbance, only to witness a gang intimidating a defenceless merchant. Anger surged within me, but before I could react, a figure swiftly emerged from the shadows, moving with elegance and ease.

In a matter of moments, the figure dispatched the entire gang, knocking them out with a fluidity that left me in awe. His movements were graceful, his skills undeniable. It was clear that this was no ordinary swordsman.

The swordsman turned to face us, a soft smile gracing his lips. His deep crimson hair and golden eyes seemed to hold a hint of loneliness, a secret he carried within. "Greetings, young ones. It seems fate has brought us together," he said, his voice carrying a calm and mysterious tone.

I couldn't help but be drawn to him, his presence captivating. "Who are you?" I asked, my curiosity getting the better of me.

He chuckled softly. "Ah, just a wandering samurai you can find just about anywhere. But you can call me Maboroshiya," he replied, his smile never wavering.

As I looked into his eyes, I sensed a depth of power and knowledge hidden beneath his calm facade. There was something about him that felt otherworldly, and I couldn't help but be intrigued.

"Pleased to meet you, Maboroshiya. I'm Shinku Yozora," I introduced myself, extending a hand towards him. "Your skills are incredible. I've never seen anyone move like that before."

He gave me a soft smile, his golden eyes sparkling with a touch of loneliness. "Thank you, Shinku. I've honed my abilities over the years, but there is always more to learn."

I couldn't help but feel a connection to him, as if our paths were destined to intersect. "Maboroshiya, there's something about you that feels otherworldly. Are you really just a wandering samurai?"

He chuckled lightly, his laughter carrying a hint of mystery. "Appearances can be deceiving, my young friend. Let's just say that I have a few secrets of my own."

As he spoke, I noticed two fox-like creatures emerge from the shadows, their fur a stark contrast of black and white. Maboroshiya introduced them as Hikari and Yoru, his familiars.

Hikari, the white and purple kitsune, approached me with a gentle presence. She exuded an aura of light and healing magic, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth from her. Yoru, the black and red kitsune, had an air of mischief and power, his dark and fire magic radiating from him.

He accepted my hand with a gentle grip, his touch sending a shiver down my spine. "The pleasure is mine, Shinku Yozora. Fate has a way of intertwining our paths, and I sense great potential within you." he said, his voice laced with a hint of excitement. However, before I could say anything, a gust of wind blew by, and I was blinded by some cherry blossom petals. When I finally brushed the petals out of my eyes, Maboroshiya had vanished… Wait, where did those cherry blossoms come from anyway? With the mysteries surrounding Maboroshiya lingering in my mind, I continued on with Pia to complete our errands.

The next day, I woke up feeling refreshed and ready to face whatever challenges awaited me. As I made my way downstairs, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was different. Just as I was about to head to the dining hall for breakfast, I heard a familiar voice calling out my name.

"Shinku!" Mediell's voice rang out, filled with excitement and joy. I turned to see her standing by the entrance, a bright smile on her face. She had come to visit unexpectedly, her presence adding a touch of whimsy to my day.

"Mediell!" I greeted her warmly, pleasantly surprised by her visit. "What brings you here?"

Her light pink eyes sparkled with enthusiasm. "I thought it would be a wonderful surprise to spend some time together today. I want to show you more of the city and its hidden gems."

I couldn't help but feel touched by her thoughtfulness. "That sounds fantastic. I would love to explore the city with you, Mediell."

Just as Mediell and I were about to head out, Iris appeared, her gentle purple and blue hair flowing behind her. She had a mischievous glint in her pastel pinkish blue eyes, and her presence added a sense of liveliness to the room.

"My, my, what do we have here," Iris said, smirking at me. "Going on an adventure with Mediell, are we?"

I chuckled, knowing well that Iris was just trying to tease me. "Yes, it seems like Mediell has planned a day of exploration for us. Care to join?"

Iris crossed her arms, a smirk still lingering on her face. "Of course, I'm joining. You need someone to keep you out of trouble, after all." Seeming very slightly mad for some reason.

Just as we were about to leave, Rei stormed into the room, her golden eyes flashing with irritation. She had always been a source of conflict with Iris, and it seemed like today was no exception.

"There you are, Iris!" Rei exclaimed, his voice filled with exasperation. "I've been looking all over for you. Gavrail is looking for you, cause your room looks like a war went on in there."

Iris crossed her arms defiantly. "And why should I listen to you? I can do whatever I want."

Rei's frustration grew evident as he clenched his fists. "Because if you don’t go and help clean, then I’ll just take you to Gavrail and she can punish you any way she pleases."

Their argument continued, the tension between them palpable. I decided to intervene before things escalated further.

I sighed, feeling the weight of their bickering. "Enough, you two. Can we put our differences aside for once and work together instead of fighting like cats and dogs?"

Rei huffed, but eventually relented. "Fine. But don't expect me to enjoy it. Also, why is Mediell here?"

“Ah, Mediell just offered to show me some cool places around the city today. I thought it might be nice to find some places and who knows, maybe we could find something to help to unravel this so-called prophecy a bit.” I explained smiling, not knowing that I had just shifted the vibe of the room.

“Is that so. Then I’m coming too. I need to keep an eye on you…” Trying to think of an excuse. “So you don’t, get lost again. Yes. You always get distracted while walking around with others.” Smirking as if she had the greatest idea ever. Iris hearing this suddenly surprised by Rei’s words decide to chime in.

“I, I agree with Rei, so I’m coming too!” Throwing her hand up, exclaiming. Both Rei and Iris forcing a smile, while glaring at each other,

“Ah, sure. At least you two are agreeing with each other for once.” Slightly taken aback by the insult, but still happy that Rei and Iris are finally starting to get along. Meanwhile, Mediell looked slightly sad and shy.

With the four of us finally ready, we stepped out into the vibrant streets of the city. The sun bathed everything in its golden glow, and the air was alive with the lively atmosphere of the market. Merchants called out their wares, street performers entertained the passersby, and the chatter of the townsfolk filled the air.

Mediell led the way with her boundless enthusiasm, her pastel green hair swaying with each step. She pointed out various sights and hidden spots she had discovered over time, her excitement contagious. We wandered through the market stalls, our senses overwhelmed by the vivid array of fruits, vegetables, and colourful fabrics. The scents of spices and freshly baked goods wafted through the air, enticing us with their mouthwatering aroma.

Mediell's eyes sparkled with delight as she introduced us to her favourite vendors, each one offering a unique and delectable treat. We couldn't resist sampling the local delicacies, savouring the flavours that danced on our tongues. The market became a tapestry of sights, sounds, and tastes, an immersive experience that immersed us in the city's vibrant culture.

As we continued our journey, we stumbled upon a small park tucked away in a quiet corner of the city. The park was a hidden gem, adorned with blooming flowers in a kaleidoscope of color and tall trees that provided shade and solace. The tranquil atmosphere washed over us, offering respite from the bustling streets.

We found a bench and sat down, basking in the serene ambiance. The soft rustling of leaves, the distant laughter of children, and the gentle chirping of birds created a symphony of tranquillity. I took in the beauty of the surroundings, my eyes tracing the delicate petals of a nearby rose.

"This is such a beautiful place, Mediell," I remarked, my voice filled with genuine admiration. "How did you find it?"

Mediell's smile was soft and serene as she gazed at the park with affection. "I stumbled upon it one day while exploring the city," she said. "It instantly captivated me with its peacefulness. I've spent many afternoons here, finding solace and inspiration in its beauty."

I nodded, appreciating Mediell's keen eye for hidden treasures. "Thank you for sharing it with us. It's truly a special place."

As we sat in comfortable silence, enjoying the tranquillity, a gentle breeze rustled through the leaves, carrying with it a sense of mystery and adventure.

"I can't help but wonder what other wonders this city holds," Mediell said, breaking the silence. Her eyes sparkled with excitement.

Iris nodded, her gaze fixed on the distant spires. "There's so much to explore. I'm eager to see what else awaits us."

Rei, always the curious one, grinned. "I heard there's an ancient fortress nearby, filled with stories of battles and triumphs. I'd love to see it up close."

Mediell's face lit up. "Oh, the fortress is indeed fascinating! But let's start with the majestic cathedral. Its stained glass windows are like portals to another world."

Intrigued, I asked, "What stories do the windows tell?"

"They depict tales of heroes and legends," Mediell explained. "The sunlight filtering through the vibrant hues creates a mesmerizing aura inside. You have to see it."

With Mediell leading the way, we ventured through the winding streets, our footsteps echoing against the cobblestones. Soon, we arrived at the magnificent cathedral, and Iris gasped in awe.

"Wow, it's even more breathtaking than I imagined," she said, her eyes wide with wonder.

Rei, however, couldn't contain his excitement about the fortress. "I can't wait to explore its towering walls and imagine the battles that once took place there."

As we continued our journey, the narrow alleyways greeted us with colourful murals that celebrated the city's cultural heritage. Mediell pointed out the intricate details, her voice filled with passion.

"Each stroke of paint tells a story," She explained. "Look closely, and you'll find hidden symbolism and messages of unity."

The day progressed, and our steps eventually led us back to Mediell's family mansion, an imposing structure surrounded by lush gardens. We entered the mansion, and Mediell gave us a small tour of its opulent rooms.

"Welcome to my home," Mediell said with pride. "My mother, Yvette, is out for a meeting with the king, but I'm sure she'll be thrilled to meet you all later."

I couldn't help but be drawn to the vast library, lined with shelves reaching the ceiling. Books of all sizes and colours filled the space, promising a wealth of knowledge and stories.

Rei's eyes widened as he surveyed the room. "This is a reader's paradise! So many tales waiting to be discovered."

My fingers grazed the spines of the books, and my attention was captured by a worn-out volume with a leather cover. Curiosity piqued, I picked it up, feeling an inexplicable connection to its weathered exterior.

"What have you found there?" Iris asked, peering over my shoulder.

I opened the book, and the words that greeted me left me speechless. "It's a collection of ancient lost magic, tales, and legends from all around the world."

Mediell's eyes gleamed with excitement. "Oh, you've stumbled upon a rare treasure! Those texts hold secrets and enchantments long forgotten."

As I delved deeper into the intricate descriptions of spells and enchantments, the pages seemed to come alive, transporting me to a world of wonder.

Rei leaned in, his voice filled with anticipation. "What does it say? Share some of the stories with us."

Lost in the magic, I began to narrate snippets of the tales, watching my friends' faces light up with fascination and intrigue.

"The worn-out book has become a gateway to a universe where unimaginable things become reality," I said, my voice filled with wonder.

Iris clasped her hands together, her eyes shining. "I can't believe we've stumbled upon something so extraordinary. We must embrace this adventure and uncover the hidden secrets within these ancient texts."

Mediell nodded, a smile playing on her lips. "Together, we'll unlock a world of ancient magic and forgotten knowledge. Our journey has just begun."

In that moment, surrounded by the whispers of the past and the grandeur of the library, we knew that we were embarking on a remarkable adventure, where the impossible would become possible, and where the power of ancient magic would guide us every step of the way.

As we prepared to leave Mediell's mansion, ready to bid farewell for the day, the front door swung open, revealing a surprised Yvette.

"Well, well, look who we have here," Yvette teased, her eyes dancing mischievously. "Bringing Shinku home so early after properly meeting him the other day, Mediell?"

My cheeks flushed with embarrassment, and I glanced at Mediell, who was desperately trying to hide her own blushing face. "N-No, it's not like that! We were just... exploring the city together."

Rei and Iris chimed in, attempting to come to our rescue. "Yeah, it was a group outing! Nothing more," Rei said with a nervous chuckle.

Iris nodded vigorously. "Absolutely! We were all having a great time as friends."

Yvette's laughter filled the room. "Oh, Mediell, you don't need to hide it. It's normal to have a crush, especially on someone as charming as Shinku."

My face grew hotter, and I shifted uncomfortably. Mediell stammered, "I-I don't have a crush on him! Really, Mother, it's not like that."

Yvette's eyes twinkled with amusement. "Well, well, we'll see about that."

Before the teasing could continue, Yvette shifted her attention to me. "Actually, Shinku, I was looking for you anyway. The king has summoned both you and Mediell to the castle tomorrow. He wishes to see you in the throne room."

Surprised by the sudden turn of events, I nodded. "Understood, I'll be there."

Yvette's gaze flickered back to Mediell. "Now, Mediell, be a good hostess and walk Shinku back to his home. It's getting late."

As we walked together, Mediell subtly pulled me behind Rei and Iris, who were engrossed in their lively conversation. She leaned closer and whispered, "Thank you, Shinku. I truly enjoyed today, and I'm grateful to have you as a friend."

I blinked in surprise, the warmth of her words resonating within me. "I had a wonderful time too, Mediell. You're an amazing friend."

She bit her lip hesitantly before whispering again, her voice barely audible. "Next time, maybe... just the two of us?"

Taken aback by her request, I found myself slightly flustered. But something in her eyes made me realize that maybe, just maybe, there was more to our connection than mere friendship. "Sure, Mediell. I'd like that."

We arrived at my mansion, and Mediell bid us farewell before turning back toward her own home. As she disappeared from sight, Pia, approached with an official letter in his hands.

"Master Shinku, a letter from the king," she said, handing it to me.

Although I already knew what the letter was going to ask me, I unfolded the letter, my eyes scanning the contents. But the words on the page sent a jolt of surprise through me.

"It's a battle royale," I muttered to myself, the weight of the news sinking in. "I am to represent the Eastern Federation in a battle against four other nations."

Pia, who had peeked over my shoulder to read the letter, nodded solemnly. "Yes, Master Shinku. It seems the king has chosen you for this challenge."

As the reality of the situation settled in, a mix of excitement and apprehension coursed through me. I would be pitted against warriors from three other nations, each vying for victory.

I took a deep breath, steeling myself for the battles that lay ahead. "Thank you, Pia. Please prepare everything I need for this tournament. I have a feeling it will be quite the journey."

Pia nodded and bowed slightly before hurrying off to make the necessary arrangements. I turned to face the others and to my surprise, Reijy, Gavrial, and Mana had appeared out of nowhere. Since when did they get behind me?

Reijy stepped forward. "Master Shinku, participating in a battle royale can be a perilous endeavour. We must take utmost care to ensure your safety."

Gavrail’s voice tinged with excitement. "I can't wait to see you in action, Shinku! Just be sure to stay behind me at all times. I'll unleash my wrath upon anyone who dares to harm you!"

Sigh. You’re not participating in the battle royale.” Dropping my head from the absurd comment.

Iris, floats near me. "I'm so excited, Shinku! You're going to do amazing things! Just remember to listen to me during the battles, okay? I'll guide you to victory!"

Rei's worried eyes met mine, her grip tightening on my arm. "Big brother, promise me you'll be careful out there. I don't want anything bad to happen to you." Her voice trembled, showing both her fear and determination.

Their words brought a mix of comfort and anticipation. I knew the challenges ahead would be tough, but I also had a team of loyal and capable companions by my side. As I glanced back at the letter, I couldn't help but feel that this battle royale was somehow connected to it. Perhaps it held the key to unravelling the mysteries surrounding my past. My focus was now on the tournament ahead. I would train diligently, hone my skills, and strategize for each battle. The opponents would be formidable, but I was determined to achieve eternal glory and victory for the Eastern Federation. With the support of my companions and the weight of destiny upon my shoulders, I would step onto that grand stage and face whatever challenges awaited me. The battles would test my limits, forge unbreakable bonds, and shape my destiny.

"A battle royale, huh? Bring it on! I'll give it my all!"
