Chapter 1:

Meet Me, Grimm

Grimm: Life or Death

Hello, I'm Grimm. At 18 years old in human terms, life can be rather intriguing when your father is Death himself. I'm well aware of the apparent coincidence that my first name aligns so conveniently with the title "Grim Reaper," but I assure you, there's more to it than meets the eye. Being the sole heir to Death's legacy, I naturally inherited his name, though he did grant me an extra "m" to distinguish myself. In his view, "Grimm" sounded far more appealing than the rather unimaginative "Grim II."

You might assume that being a reaper is a grim and somber existence, but let me tell you, it's actually quite the contrary. When we collect the souls of those who knock on our door, the experience is unlike anything you could imagine from the aftermath. For instance, if you witnessed someone like Scott suffering from a heart attack in a parking lot, our perception would be vastly different. In the realm where we operate, we have the freedom to employ creativity and imagination when guiding souls. The mundane routine you see in everyday life is entirely transformed into an exhilarating realm of endless possibilities.

Admittedly, my father is growing weary of the taxing responsibility of selecting those whose time has come. Consequently, he has taken on the role of my mentor, training me in the art of reaping. However, before I can assume this daunting task on my own, my father has devised a peculiar plan—to send me off to live among humans during my senior year of "high school."

Living amongst humans presents an entirely new set of challenges. My father desires to observe their reactions to death and, more importantly, to determine if I can blend seamlessly into their world, much like he has. As reapers, we must remain inconspicuous, and this experiment will test my ability to adapt, assimilate, and stay undetected.

Yet, the true purpose behind this venture is for me to grasp the immense weight my actions carry on the living. I need to comprehend the profound emotional and mental toll my role inflicts on those left behind. Can I truly bear the responsibility of replacing my father as "Death"? It's a question that weighs heavily on my mind.

Over time, I've spent a fair amount of time interacting with humans, although admittedly brief, as I merely "stop their time." However, attending school will immerse me in their world for a more extended period—around seven hours each day, to be precise. It might not seem like much, but for someone like me, it's an eternity compared to my usual encounters.

As I venture into the unforgiving realm of human existence, I'm both apprehensive and exhilarated. This journey holds the potential to redefine my understanding of life and death, granting me the ability to forge a unique path in the delicate dance between mortality and the afterlife. Ultimately, it is an experience that will shape not only my destiny as "Grimm" but also as a young man who seeks to discover his place in the grand plane of existence.
