Chapter 2:

A Horrifyingly New Experience; School Clothes Shopping

Grimm: Life or Death

As the start of the school year approached, I found myself preparing for a rather unfamiliar undertaking—school clothes shopping. My father, Death, had given me some advice on how to blend in, but it was up to me to pick out the right attire and create a convincing human facade. It seemed like a daunting task, but I was determined to embrace the experience wholeheartedly.

Accompanied by my father, who was always dressed in his traditional dark cloak, we ventured into the bustling world of fashion. The store was filled with vibrant colors and lively chatter, a stark contrast to the usual somber ambiance I was accustomed to. We browsed through racks of clothes, my father occasionally offering suggestions with a wry smile.

"Remember, Grimm, you want to look natural but not too conspicuous. Neutral colors and casual styles should do the trick," he advised, glancing over at a display of simple jeans and plain shirts.

He was right. I didn't want to draw unnecessary attention, so I selected a few pairs of jeans in different shades and some basic T-shirts that wouldn't raise any eyebrows. I also picked out a cozy hoodie for the colder days, and my father insisted on getting me a well-fitting jacket.

"Even humans need to stay warm," he said with a hint of humor in his voice.

With the clothing sorted, it was time to shop for the essential school supplies. I'd never needed them before, but now I had to get used to the idea of textbooks, notebooks, and pens. My father helped me navigate the maze of school supplies, and we filled a cart with all the necessities.

As we waited in line to check out, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. I was eager to embark on this human experience, but at the same time, I couldn't shake the realization that my life was about to change significantly.

Once we had everything we needed, we headed home, and I spent the evening organizing my new belongings. I laid out my clothes for the first day of school, ensuring that I would appear like any other student.

The night before school started, I struggled to fall asleep. Thoughts and worries buzzed through my mind like a swarm of bees. What if I stood out? What if I couldn't connect with anyone? What if they sensed there was something different about me?

However, as the morning sun rose, a newfound determination washed over me. I had to face my fears head-on, just like I had faced countless souls crossing over to the other side. This was a chance to embrace the human experience, to understand their emotions, and to become the best version of myself—both "Grimm" and "Calitri".

Dressed in my carefully chosen outfit, I looked at myself in the mirror and took a deep breath. "You can do this," I whispered to my reflection.

With my father's encouraging smile, I walked out the door and stepped into the human world, ready to take on the role of a high school senior named "Calitri Li Fonti." The excitement and uncertainty intertwined, but deep down, I knew that this journey would shape my understanding of life, death, and everything in between. As made my way to the front of the school, where the main office was, I reminded myself that I was not just a reaper; I'm supposed to be human.

In the end, school clothes shopping and getting everything ready for school had been only the beginning of a much greater adventure, one that would reveal the profound connections between life and death, and the immense beauty that existed in both realms.
