Chapter 11:

Unexpected Reunions and Flustered Hearts

Caffeine Cupid: a love brewed in coffee and chaos

Sunday, the day that always seemed to have a perpetual yawn attached to it, had rolled in with all the enthusiasm of a wet noodle. The summer breeze tried its best to put on a show by dramatically flapping the curtains, but even it seemed to be on strike against the relentless heat. Even the air conditioner, my trusty companion, seemed to be panting like an exhausted marathon runner.

Boredom was engulfing me like a fluffy cloud of despair. I mean, I had stared at the ceiling for so long that it was starting to resemble a complex piece of modern art. Just as I was contemplating having a riveting conversation with my pet sock, I had a genius idea: why not consult the oracle of all things interesting – Cherry.

I jabbed my fingers at the phone, typing out Cherry’s name.

"What's the plan for today?" I tapped out a message.

Staring at the ceiling, I waited for a response, hoping for an adventure to drop from the digital heavens. And then, like a divine intervention, my phone buzzed.

Cherry: just completed a quest on Crime Quest, what do you want?

Karma: I want ice-cream

Cherry: That's...not what I meant. What the flip, dude. ( ̄  ̄|||)

Karma: ( ◡‿◡ *)

Cherry: My eyes hurt from that cringe, seriously.

Karma: Well, you are the queen of cringe. (ง ื▿ ื)ว

Cherry: Excuse me? You started it. (o・_・)ノ”(ノ_<、)

Karma: UNO reverse

Cherry: Ugh, whatever. Anyway, I gotta go now ( ̄□ ̄」)

Karma: Oh, where to, m'lady?

Cherry: The convenience store. I'm on a snack restock mission. (¯▿¯)

Karma: Funny you mention that, I've got some errands too. Mind if I join your noble quest?

Cherry: Uh, sure. Not like it's a secret mission or anything.

Karma: Cool beans.

Cherry: Let's rendezvous in 10, got it?

Karma: Roger that, Captain.

With a renewed sense of purpose, I hopped off my bed and dashed to the bathroom for a quick face splash. Putting on clothes became an interpretive dance of enthusiasm, and I found myself humming tunes only I could decipher. I was practically radiating good vibes as I waltzed down the stairs.

"Hey, mom. Guess what? I'm off to the convenience store. Need me to snag some groceries for you while I'm at it?"

My mother, ever the perceptive sage, responded with a raised eyebrow that spoke volumes.

"Well, well, look who's turning into a responsible adult. Since when did you volunteer for grocery duty?"

A chuckle escaped my lips. "I'm just going to snag some ice-cream. The heat is something else. Figured I could grab your groceries while I'm at it."

Understanding twinkled in my mother's eyes as she handed me a neatly written list. "Very well then. Take this."

I took the list. "Okay, see you later mom. I love you.”

As I strolled, my gaze flitted over the list's contents: green onions, tomatoes, shrimp, oyster sauce, chili powder, garlic cloves, olive oil, lettuce, avocado—shrimp curry in the making, no doubt.

The convenience store welcomed me with its familiar aisles, and yet a familiar face was conspicuously absent. Ah, perhaps I had beaten her to the punch this time. Resolving to complete the task at hand, I delved into my mission, gathering each item with care and consideration.

Just as I was about to make my way to the billing counter, a voice punctuated the air with warmth. "Oh hey Karma!" There she was, Cherry, her radiant smile like a sunbeam breaking through the clouds.

"Hey Cherry!" I greeted in kind, mirroring her delight.

"Back for another round of grocery escapades?" Cherry inquired with a knowing grin.

"Yeah, something like that," I replied, our conversation flowing effortlessly.

Our chatter continued as we collected our desired goods, a delightful rhythm of exchange accompanying our selections. A playful mention of caffeine led to a revelation—the beverage wasn't the object of desire today. Cherry's eyes lit up as she revealed her plan to create a coffee cake, and I couldn't help but appreciate the contagious excitement in her voice.

"Sounds delicious," I mused. "Mind if I give it a try when it's ready?"

Cherry's response was swift and affirmative, her enthusiasm setting the stage for future culinary delight.

Exiting the store, the blazing sun greeted us with relentless heat. Ice-cream became our salvation, a sweet respite from the scorching weather. With a simple gesture, I extended an ice-cream to Cherry, a small token of companionship for the sweltering journey ahead.

"Thank you, Karma!" Cherry's gratitude was like a melody, warming my heart in ways I hadn't anticipated.

Why does she have to smile like that? My heart was beating like crazy. Shit man, control yourself Karma.

The internal fluttering was undeniable, though I masked it with a casual demeanor.

As we walked back, the mundane journey morphed into a detour, an unexpected turn driven by Cherry's desire to explore a new manga store. Her relief and elation upon securing a coveted item was infectious, her reaction evoking a chuckle from me.

"You tend to overreact, you know," I playfully remarked, taking in her animated reaction.

“I don’t.” Her protest was swift and accompanied by an endearing pout that could melt even the sternest of hearts.

She’s darn cute.

An unexpected figure dashed into view, engulfing Cherry in a spontaneous back-hug that left both of us momentarily bewildered. As manga and snacks tumbled to the ground, the stage was set for a scene that seemed straight out of a drama.

"I'm back. Did you miss me, Cherry?" The boy's words hung in the air, a mix of familiarity and intrigue. With unruly brown hair and mischievous eyes, he exuded an air of casual confidence, but his proximity to Cherry stirred something within me.

"Ryuu?" Cherry's shock was palpable, her voice barely a whisper.

"So you do remember me, huh?" His playful grin persisted. "You've grown even prettier, cutie. I missed you." A second embrace followed, leaving Cherry seemingly stunned, struggling to process the unexpected encounter.

His gaze shifted towards me, and his words held a sharp edge as he scrutinized me. "And who's this guy you're hanging out with?" His eyes blazed with an unexpected intensity, casting a shadow over what had been a sunlit moment.
