Chapter 33:

The Moon Is Beautiful, Isn't It?

From the Depths of an Emotionless Heart

Days had slipped by, and finally, the long anticipated Friday evening had arrived. Mika embarked on his preparations for the upcoming two days. Since the train ticket was scheduled for an afternoon departure at eight, he had devoted the entire afternoon to his arrangements.

She's probably getting ready just like me

Just as he concluded his preparations, a message from Saya popped up on his screen.

"Are you ready?" she inquired.

"Yes, are you set?" Mika swiftly responded.

"I think so, but there's this nagging feeling like I've forgotten something." Saya's text was accompanied by an emoji.

They had arranged to meet at a location equidistant from both of their homes. As they joined up, Mika's eyes fell upon the petite suitcase in Saya's grip, prompting his curiosity.

"Did you really need to bring a suitcase?" he inquired.

"Absolutely! What did you pack?"

"Just a backpack," Mika responded, turning around to showcase his bag.

"Even with your school bag... I can't believe you, Mika!" Saya exclaimed, her astonishment evident.

Following a brief silence, Saya posed another question, "So, what's our next move?"

"The most logical step would be to take the tram and make our way to the train station," Mika suggested, consulting his phone for directions.

"Tram? Can you ride a tram and a train?

"Yeah, it's pretty straightforward since it's a four wheeler," Mika explained.

"If only you'd shared this tidbit earlier. Why didn't we take the metro or tram to the hospital before?"

"Because they don't operate on that side," Mika clarified.

"Interesting... Well, let's not dawdle. We don't want to be late."

"Agreed."

They journeyed together to the tram station and boarded the tram. As they ventured toward the train station, Mika inquired,

"Saya, did your mom say anything?"

"No, quite the opposite. She was thrilled. She even helped me pack my bag," Saya revealed.

"Is that so? Well, that's reassuring," Mika remarked.

"How about your parents? Did they say anything?" Saya inquired with curiosity.

"No, I didn't inform them," Mika stated matter of-factly.

"Why?, you're quite a handful for your family ugh nevermind..." Saya sighed deeply.

At last, they reached the train station and embarked on a quest to locate their assigned train car.

"Alright, Car 7, Seats E9 and E10," Mika announced, verifying the ticket details on his phone.

"I hope everything is as it should be," Saya expressed her concern.

After presenting their tickets to the train staff and confirming their seating arrangements, they stepped onto the train.

Their compartment was a lavish double room adorned with dark wooden furnishings and two elongated seats, likely convertible into beds.

"Look at this room!" Saya exclaimed excitedly upon entering and placing her suitcase down.

"Yes, they must have opted for top-notch accommodations," Mika commented as he gazed out of the window.

"Top quality indeed! For a moment, I felt like a high flying businessperson," Saya exclaimed, plopping herself onto one of the seats.

Just as the train set in motion, a summons for dinner reached their ears. The duo headed to the train's dining area together.

While awaiting their meals, Saya struck up a conversation, her curiosity evident,

"So, what's our plan after we disembark?"

"There's another vintage train that takes us into the city. We'll switch over there. The tickets have already been arranged," Mika explained.

"I see... It's a bit astonishing how much effort they're putting into this for a website we set up in a matter of days and a couple of products," Saya mused as she sipped on her raspberry juice.

"I can't say for sure. Maybe it's because they're a large corporation,"

The sun was dipping below the horizon, offering a panoramic view of their hometown.

Eventually, their meals arrived, and they partook in a shared dining experience.

By the time they concluded their meal, the night had enveloped them.

Returning to their room, they encountered neatly arranged beds awaiting them.

"Look, Mika, they've already made the beds. When did they find the time for this?" Saya exclaimed, her face lighting up.

"They probably attended to it during our dinner," Mika deduced.

"I'm claiming the window-side!" Saya declared excitedly.

"Sure, enjoy," Mika responded, unfazed.

They settled onto their respective beds and engaged in conversation for a while. Saya had let her hair down, and Mika had gone into the bathroom to brush his teeth. Finally, their preparations before going to sleep were complete. As the hour for slumber approached, Mika adjusted the air conditioning and switched off the lights.

Moonlight gently streamed into the room, casting a tranquil glow.

"Look, Mika, the moon is enormous!" Saya marveled, her gaze fixed on the celestial display.

"Yes, it's a full moon tonight," Mika acknowledged, his attention drawn outside as well.

"You can't appreciate it properly from there. Come over and see," Saya urged eagerly.

"It's fine, I can see it perfectly—"

"COME HERE!" Saya interjected with a touch of impatience. Despite her attempt at annoyance, her panda patterned pajamas gave her a more endearing, tsundere appearance.

Mika obliged, shifting to Saya's bed to get a better view of the moon.

"The moon is beatiful, don't you think?" Saya remarked, her attention still directed outward.

"Yes, it truly is. The stars are quite vivid too," Mika observed, his gaze fixed on the night sky.

"Indeed, because we're away from the city lights," Saya added.

After spending a while admiring the night sky, Mika eventually averted his gaze.

"Anyway, I think I'll turn in now," he announced, shifting back to his bed.

"Wait a moment." Saya grabbed his hand.

"What's the matter?"

Saya met Mika's eyes in silence for a brief moment.

"What is it, Saya?"

"Nothing much, just wanted to see if you got a message."

"What message?"

"Never mind, good night."

"Alright... Good night," Mika responded.

Mika lying down on his bed and closing his eyes.

After a while he hear Saya's voice.

"Hey, Mika."

Mika opened his eyes to find Saya reclining on her bed, facing him with a smile. The moonlight bathed her countenance, making her blue eyes shimmer. She regarded him with a contented smile.

"Yes?"

"Thank you."

"For what?"

"For everything." Saya held Mika's gaze with a mixture of understanding and warmth.

"Everything?"

"Especially for being a good person."

"Well... You're welcome," Mika replied, his mind a swirl of bewilderment.

"That's all. Sweet dreams," Saya said before turning her attention back to the window.

Through it all, Mika pondered,

I suppose I'll never quite grasp what she's trying to convey
