Chapter 0:

That’s When I Heard An Angel’s Voice

I Need You, Sensei

Ahh. This is it, I guess. My time is drawing closer, but to be honest, I didn’t expect it to come to an end this early in my life. Is this what dying feels like? It’s somewhat peaceful. I feel a gentle embrace of tranquility enveloping me. My breath has grown shallower. The world around me is getting blurrier, as if I am a camera that cannot seem to focus.

I can hear voices calling out to me. They shout ‘Sozen! Sozen! Stay with me!’ Who’s voice is that? Ah, that must be my dear sister. I’m sorry, Reika. Please forgive me for leaving you alone. You may be my older sister, but I still wanted to protect you. I hear another voice. It’s another female voice. Is that Karou? Her voice is usually so tender and calm, but now it sounds desperate and sorrowful. Is she crying? Please don’t cry, Karou. You promised me you would stop crying after the funeral. Both of you are making it harder than it needs to be.

“Let me through. I’m a medical student. I can help him. Hey! Hey! Boy! Stay with me!”

The light is slowly dimming, but there’s this other voice I hear calling out to me. This voice is unfamiliar to me. It transcends earthly bounds and echoes through the dark void like a holy choir, whose tone resonates with divine grace. Its warmth is so refreshing, like it is almost freeing me from Death’s cold embrace. It’s reaching out to me and pulling me back from the beyond, guiding me through the darkness and into the light. What an angelic voice.

When I opened my eyes, I found myself in a hospital bed. The lights were almost blinding, but when I regained my vision, I saw my sister and my childhood best friend in front of me.

“Sozen! You’re okay! I’m glad.”

“I thought I almost lost you.”

Their eyes were so red and wet that I could tell they had been crying for a while.

“What happened?”

“You nearly drowned.”

“I nearly drowned?”

“Thankfully, someone performed CPR on you and managed to save you.”

It must have been that angelic voice that saved me. “Who was it?”

“A random stranger. She claimed to be a medical student.”

“I see.”

So this medical student was my saviour. I wish I could have seen their face. Was their face as elegant as their voice?

My mysterious angel, who are you?
