Chapter 2:

Blue Overalls

Ashes of War

Takahiro woke up early in the morning. Used the radio to contact with JGSA and gave his first day report. Shin was waiting him on the other side of the line.

"So how is it so far." asked Shin.

"I have few places to check. I don't think it'll be a risky operation." They weren't speaking completely in formal. They've known each other for a very long time and they started ignoring these things without even realizing it. Well, at least when they were alone. Takahiro took a sip from his coffee. "What Gina did is not bad at all. But I feel like she could have done much more than that."

"What do you mean?"

"She spotted four different places, which might have a connection with the enemy organization. One of them is not too hard to track down, it's just a factory with some workers in it. Seems like they're acting suspicious, so i'll start my investigation from there."

"And you think Gina could have done the same, right?"

"Exactly. It doesn't seem too dangerous. She must be capable of doing that. I wonder if she was looking for other clues about something or someone. "

"Well, I'm sure she had her reasons. Maybe something more suspicious took her attention."

"Yeah it might be." said Takahiro as he takes another sip.

"Alright then, I better get going. I will keep giving you daily reports. If you can't make contact with me more than 3 days, it means things are not going so well."

"I already know that, Lieutenant. Best of luck."

As Shin turns off the radio, Takahiro took his last sip and got up from his chair. Took his backpack and headed towards to the door to exit this creepy shack.

After some walk, he climbed to roof top of an old building to watch factory in the city. As he sits down he poured another cup of coffee from his thermos. He took his binoculars out of his backpack and started watching the outside of the factory. After a while, he felt like someone was watching him.

Takahiro didn't move any muscle, just focused on what he was looking at. Whoever watches him wasn't moving, it was as if a kid hided somewhere and about to prank his parents.

'Whatever it is, it shouldn't be dangerous' thought Takahiro. 'It's not moving anymore, and until it came that close i didn't feel its existance. If it had wanted to hurt me, it could have done it already. It could be a girl, or a professional, or maybe both.'

In that situation, there was two possibilites. First and less likely, someone detected Takahiro just in the first day of his arrival to the city. Second is, Gina...

Takahiro took his chance.

"Come out, Gina."

After some silence, she got out from where she was hiding.

"I wasn't expecting you to notice me." said Gina.

"Wasn't that hard, I'm pretty sure that I wasn't detected by anybody so far." Takahiro still didn't move a muscle, his eyes were on the target all the time. "And I believe there's no one else in this city , who could quietly follow me that far other than you."

"Well, yeah. I can understand why are you so famous in JGSA and in the army." answered Gina.

"So, I believe I was crystal clear to you yesterday. Why are you here?"

"I told you that I have reasons."

"And what are they?"

"You said you don't care yesterday."

"I still don't care them but since you're like a kid who doesn't listen what your parents says, I gotta pretend to be a bit curious so I can get rid of you and find some peace."

Gina was shocked once again. It wasn't something you could say as a Lieutenant. In her opinion, Takahiro was just being rude to keep her out of this. At least she could understand that much. But it wasn't like she could accept her fate.

"I'm looking for my brother." said Gina. She waited a while for to see his reaction, after few seconds she kept talking. "I believe he's in a situation, that he shouldn't be in. I lost my contact with him 3 months ago. He was working on that factory."

"Is he a civillian or an agent?"

"A civillian."

"So that was your reason."

"Isn't this good enough you to let me accompany you?"

"Will you just go home if I say no?"

"No, I'll search him by myself, alone."

Now that was a problem. Two professional in the same area, following the same objective without making any contacts. That would be a problem and ruin the whole mission. Of course Takahiro could report her for his disobedient actions, and cut her ticket off. But it won't gonna change the situation he found himself in right now.

"Just on one condition."

"What is it?"

"You'll listen what I say and you will NOT engage in a conflict. Understood?"

"Yes sir!"

As he kept watching the factory, she leaned against the wall and gave the details about his brother. He is at his early twenties, a little bit younger than Gina. He has very short black hair and no beards. He has a small scar on his face, just above his right eye. As what Gina says, their father was an alcoholic and he broke a vase on the head of Gina's brother.

"What an asshole." said Takahiro.

"Yeah I know."

"And what happened to him?"

"I don't know, we left the house when I was 15."

"And your mother?"

"She died after giving birth to my brother."

"What was his name again?"

"Taki."

"And who named you? Your name is not so common in Japan. I suppose it has a different origin."

"My father gave me my name."

"Why did he choose Gina?"

"As what I heard, Gina was the name of his old girlfriend. I'm not sure where she was from and what happened between them but that's all I know."

"A vehicle is exiting the factory." said Takahiro as he raises his hand to stop her talking. "It's a pickup truck, light brown, seems like old, trunk is probably loaded, it's covered with some kind of plastic green tarp. There are two men in the car with blue overalls."

"Which way are they heading to?"

"If they ride towards to southwest, we'll be able to keep watching them. It also means they're heading towards to the airport. If north, it might be both sawmill and bunker."

"But there's no paths or roads, even its existance is unknown."

"Where did you learn about that bunker?"

"I just.. borrowed the city plans. There was an old bunker to provide protection to people of the city in World War 2. But when I checked the area, there was no sign of a bunker."

"Well, we can just head towards to sawmill, we should see their truck there. If we don't see it, we have nothing but to find that bunker."
