Chapter 4:

Scarface

Ashes of War

As the sun starts rising, another truck approached to the sawmill.

"Lieutenant." said Gina as she shakes Takahiro.

"I'm awake."

He was used to sleep in the middle of enemy lines, just like the other special soldiers who spent their days and nights out there. It was more like resting their soul, rather than their body. They were always half awake.

"They came back with a different truck." said Gina.

"Yeah, there should be two possibilities but I think it's clear to see which one is it."

"First possibility, it took a lot of time to unload their cargo. But it's not very possible since it's a pickup truck, even with the heaviest cargo it can not take more than few hours. We've waited here whole night."

"Exactly. Which is lead us to second possibility." said Takahiro, as he turns his head towards Gina. "They transported the cargo somewhere outside the city, and came back with an empty truck to return back to the factory."

"Then we got a problem, there are more cities included in their plans."

"Just return back to factory and try to learn what are they up to. Don't forget to report JGSA. It seems they still have some cargo to transport."

"And what about you?"

"I will try to learn where did they go and left the other truck." answered Takahiro.

Takahiro started moving towards to sawmill. As what he thought before, two person came out of the truck with civillian clothes.

'Everything's going according to my assumptions.' thought Takahiro. That feeling, what made him irritated before started disturbing him once again. He smelled something really suspicious about all those things happened since few days.

Takahiro remembered footprints in the forest he found. But there was no tire tracks around the sawmill. Which makes they could have both using a bunker as their headquarters and transporting unknown cargos to another cities. Which also means, the truck they were following didn't stop at sawmill. Whatever they're planning, they might be executing their plans all over the China-Russia border.

As the two men entered the sawmill, Takahiro got closer. First he moved towards to truck, and placed a tracking device under it. Then he moved back to the sawmill. He found a rotten plank, down in the foundation. He crawled and pushed himself slowly inside of the foundation.

"We're too late, Scarface gonna be mad at us."

'Scarface.. could it be Gina's brother?'

"It was your fault, I'm not the one who took the wrong turn." said the other person.

"How could I know? It's our first time here. A little delay shouldn't be a problem."

"Keep speaking as if you hate the life you're living. It probably gonna cost you an eye. Just hurry up, I don't wanna get in trouble because of you."

"Where are we taking the next cargo, didn't they tell us yet?"

"Probably Dzhalinda or Albazino, both across the river. Now come on."

As they left the sawmill, they started riding towards south with the truck, into the city. After waiting a little bit more, Takahiro placed a sound sensor under the foundation. Then he got himself out of there.

Takahiro was confused, but he decided to wait Gina to return. He walked all the way back to the old shack. He took his radio out to give report, he didn't expect that he would have to report that much.

After few hours, Gina returned back. It was already afternoon.

"You already here, I thought it would take much longer." said Gina as she enters to shack.

"Yeah, I was expecting the same. Did you learn anything?"

"Locals says that it used to be some kind of alcohol factory. Few months ago it's sold to a toy producer, because factory was too old and wasn't automated."

"And what exactly they produce?"

"Guns. They halfly automated the factory but still needs some labor."

"It gotta cost a lot how did they find that much money?"

"I'm not sure, I believe there're much more hided behind the scene."

"What if someone is funding them within the government..."

Gina was schocked a little. She was looking as if she wants an explanation.

"Since I came back to this shack, I was just thinking. They are not really cautious about transporting part. They are changing their overalls to civilian clothes but I'm not still sure why." Takahiro was watching the screen front of him. After giving his report early in the morning, he got out as he waits Gina to comeback. He bought a new laptop to follow the tracker and sensor he placed. It was easier to carry his hard drive than a laptop, and if he lost his laptop it wouldn't be a problem that way.

"I verified few things. First, they are transporting their cargos to another cities and settlements, probably the ones close to border. Second, the truck we were tracking didn't stop by the sawmill, they had a different route. Third, there should be a bunker because I saw two pair of footprints of some work shoes in the marked area. But I won't lie there are still a lot of question marks on my head about it."

"Yeah I remember those footprints."

"So my assumption is.. there is a bunker but we don't really know its purpose yet. There are more places like this sawmill, they are carrying cargos to another cities, not only to ones in China but Russia. That's how are they transporting the guns." Takahiro took a short break, as if he tries to gather his mind together.

"What came to my mind is, there must be other disguises in other warehouses, just like the one in sawmill. They're leaving the city with blue overalls and continue through the highway with civilian clothes. There is no reason for them to not change once again to pass the border without any problem."

"You mean something like military or police outfit?"

"Probably."

"There are easier ways to do it."

"But what if it's not one or two trucks? They could create a fake convoy with certain vehicles to move all those guns undetected. It'll cost a lot but make the things faster. And if something goes wrong they can just bribe the officers."

"And if they're really funded by someone it could be possible."

"And if there are peoples who wants to start a war, it's a worth investment."

Gina started to understanding whole situation. They already learned there are more cities included to their plans, you can not transport a lot of guns that fast with the pickup trucks undetected.

"If they're transporting that much of gun, then there should be more factories." said Gina.

"Or facilities. And depends on how big is that bunker, they could've build a huge facility inside it." said Takahiro as if the whole mystery was suddenly solved.

"But we didn't find it, did we?"

"We didn't find it because it probably never been there. For my opinion somebody changed the city plans to delay possible investigations."

"What about footprints you found? They were the proof of that bunkers existence."

"It could be a distraction, well actually I hope it is a distraction. JGSA already started looking where that bunker is and I placed a tracker on that truck we saw today, so it won't take too long to see the truth."

"But doesn't that mean they're aware of us?"

"It might be, or it's just their precautions. In the end we're just talking about possibilities and assumptions."

"Wow, if everything you said is true, then I really am impressed, Lieutenant."

"Well, we will see about it. Now we know there's a serious attempt of terrorism and they are quite numerous. There are multiple settlements on their targets and they're most likely funded by some people in government, not sure from which country. With all of that, normally our mission should've ended here." said Takahiro with a smiling face. But then, he put a serious expression.

"I heard them saying a name, someone in charge of their organization." Takahiro took a deep breath.

"Someone named Scarface."
