Chapter 6:

Embracing the Shadows: A Journey of Self-Discovery

The Crow

Dr. Nina: “You mentioned candies and real food right now; is this some kind of metaphor? Can you tell me more about what that means to you?

Adrian: Well, it is something like, in life, we try to fill voids or satisfy ourselves with temporary pleasures; in this case, I mentioned that candies can be used to do such because they temporarily appease our hunger. But everyone, deep down, knows that these things can never truly replace what we really need.

Dr. Nina was writing down a lot in her black notebook. ”That is,” she stopped again for a moment and leaned forward, offering a reassuring smile. A great realization, Adrian. What do you think is the “real food” in your life?

Adrian’s eyes shifted around the room before settling on a picture behind the desk: I honestly believe it is about finding people you like and making meaningful connections with them, building stronger relationships. Face your own emotions and talk about things that are bothering you instead of trying to mask them with temporary distractions.”

His answer was honest and brief. Dr. Nina seemed to like that answer from Adrian. She nodded, her gaze full of understanding.

“I am very happy you realized that, Adrian, you are making amazing progress. I am very proud of you.”

Adrian blushed; he felt something warm in his chest. Being praised like this by Dr. Nina meant that he did a very good job on this road to recovery. Or is she just saying that so she can motivate him to speak more?

Adrian remembered the shadows on the ceiling from before. He looked up, but they weren’t there anymore. He hesitated for a moment; it doesn’t look like she noticed. “Thank you; it means a lot. I am ready to go even deeper into my emotions and memories and work hard. Just like you said, only I can help myself, and I intend to do so.”

Adrian sighed, feeling the weight of his emotions start to surface. “I am just really scared, you know? I don’t want to face all that pain again.”

“Facing our emotions can be challenging, but it is also an opportunity for us to grow and to heal. Together, Adrian, we can work this out and find a solution.”

She leaned back in her chair and said, “It is completely normal to feel scared, but always remember that you never have to face this alone. I am here for you, Adrian, and so are your friends. They are waiting for you on the other side of these four walls.”

Adrian nodded, his gaze now fixed on the window. It looked like the warm glow was brighter than before. The soft rays of light entered the room, ignoring the curtain. The bookshelves filled with psychology books were illuminated.

“Talking about my father and everything that happened, it is, like... I’ve been carrying this heavy weight around; it is really exhausting. But I honestly think that I am ready to face whatever fears I have; I don’t want to run anymore.”

Dr. Nina nodded in understanding. "Acknowledging your pain is the first step towards healing, Adrian. It takes courage to confront those emotions, but it's also a sign of strength. And remember, it's okay to take things at your own pace. You may continue whenever you feel like.”
