Chapter 1:

Kanako

ALAE ~Snapshots~

"Little turnip, Little turnip, grow and grow an' be a sweet li'l turnip~"

"That doesn't look like a turnip," remarked Touya. "It's more a rounded potato."

"Heheh," replied Kanako smugly. "You can't be a greater turnip expert than me, zura. This one's a special variety."

[ Some of my dearies are drying out, zura. Gotta get to them now.]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Whoa, Kan-chan, that's a huge burger!"

"And so??? Humph, you here because you're jelly, right? Moh..."

She sliced the thing in half with a knife and offered it to him, with  wink. "Do ask nicely next time, zura! OK? Eheh..."

[ "Heehee... Perfect, zura." ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

[ My secret? Heh. Metabolism has no secret, zura. I'm simply a higher lifeform than you, ahaha! ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Huahhh..." sighed Kanako. "Studying English and Japanese in a row is giving me a headache, zura."

"Try squeezing in your favorite subject in between."

"That's the problem, zura. I don't have a favorite subject."

[ Rappin' is a legit language, right?" ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Today, Kanako will cut down on sweets, zura."

"What about pasta and noodles and burger?"

"Guh... Just one at a time, zura! My heart won't take it if you take away my burger so soon!"

[ Two candies less a day should be enough, zura. ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Touuuuu-yakun!" singsonged Kanako, not having taken down any notes herself. "Let~me have~a look~at your~Geometry notebook!"

"Sure thing! Here, I just got it from the convenience store yesterday. The paper is so fine and untouched you can wear it!"

"Guhhhh..."

[ Just so you know, I don't like spoilsports, zura. Except those who dish out treats. ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Please pass around the dip-n-chips I made, zura!"

"Kan-chan," grumbled Rikako, "It's greasy. We'll ruin our books."

"Heehee. Then I'll just spoonfeed you, if that's what you need. Zura."

[ Ah-right, don't be fussy, say ahhhh... ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Care to play to play a game with me, Yoshiyuki?" asked Kan-chan.

"I'll pass. There's something in your voice and I don't have a good feeling about it."

"Guh... Humph." To Touya she voiced a sunny, "Ne, ne, let's get Yoshiyuki's shoes and hide it someplace!"

"Don't you even think about it, I'm warning you..."

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Huahhhh~ Looks like I'm in a food mood, zura."

"Surprise," said Touya flatly. "OK, what would you like for today?"

"Heh. Fruity stuff. There's a lot of that here in Otou-san, heeheehee..."

"And half of them are pricey." His head hung. "How much do you want?"

"Yes!"

[ Next up, seafood, zura! ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Touya-kun," whispered Kanako in his ear, "I need your help with this." Her history lesson.

"Are you actually taking your lessons seriously now?" he said flatly.

"Mochiron, zura! I'm gunna be a goodie good girl starting today. I promise I'll study hard if you teach me after class everyday."

So there's the catch. "OK. You are in a higher grade than me. But I will help you enough so you can study on your own in no time."

"Don't 'ya wanna be with me, Touya-kun?!" she wailed pitiably. "Guhhhhh...."

"Ah---B-But of course I..."

Hug. "So that settles it, zura!"

[ Heehee. I knew it. You always had a secret crush on me, ne? Ne? ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

[ I'll give 'ya a peck if you take me to that café, zura. ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Kan-chan," Touya finally said, "I'll be treating you out now, so don't call me a miser anymore, please?"

Turns out she was already feasting on a cache of snacks she had hidden somewhere. He was speechless. "W-What..."

"Heehee~ You're not needed anymore, zura. Kan-Kan has a way of getting what she wants, zura."

"Guh... K-Kowai..."

[ Who 'ya calling scary? Grrrr, zura. ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"You're done?" chorused Ai and Touya in astonishment.

"Who coached you?" he asked.

"Heh. I was thinking to keep it to myself, zura. But now I don't think it would hurt for 'ya to know I know at least a fair little bit of geography, zura."

[ 🎶 It's time to learn geography~ 🎶 zura! ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Hey," said Touya in surprise. "What's on my nose?"

Kanako smiled sunnily at him. "For our hard worker, zura." She had pressed a chocolate-filled candy against said nose. "What about I take it lower... to your lips?"

[ Na~n-chat-te! Joudan, zura! ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

Kanako showed up with a trowel. "Got nothing better to do today, Touya-kun?"

"Eh? Well, uh... Wait. Don't tell me we'll be digging up worms or anything."

"Ahahahaha!" she laughed putting the trowel behind her. "Let's have lightning-fast jan-ken-pon, zura!" Wink!

[ I'm just in the mood for holding a digging tool. Believe me, zura! ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Guess what!" beamed Kanako. "I'mma learning to ropes of yo-yo, zura!"

"So how's it went?"

She made a flourish... and did a couple of... failed attempts at a trick. "Urrrgh... I been stuck at beginner's for two days now..."

[ I really should stick to a joystick... ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Touya-kun~" singsonged Kanako. "I heard you like princesses, zura~"

"Uh... What about it?"

"How would you like to play with a real princess... Me! The princess of board games, zura!"

"A real princess, eh?" said Anya overhearing. "So I guess I can snatch the title away if I win, am I right?"

"Well then. Let's decide it with a match, zura! Ah-right. Time show you and Madam some mad skills, zura."

[ Well? How was my play? Pretty cool, isn't it?" ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Who would like to try?" said Nanaka holding up the camera.

Nobody answered. Either they were awed, or intimidated by the bulky device and blinking light. Suddenly,

"It looks like a handheld console, zura. I can manage."

"Careful," quipped Anju, "if you can casually switch off a lappy, zura, who knows with something smaller, zura?"

"Zurahahahaha! Don't you worry An-chan, after I'm done with this, I will switch you off with a good roll of newspaper."

[ Zura is my pride and joy, zura! ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Touya-kun. I'll tell 'ya a secret, zura. I can teach you to tell at a glance if a fruit is spoiled inside." "Whoa, you can do that? With any fruit?"

Kanako picked up a pomelo, and then a pear. "This one. You should get it into a fridge right away."

"Right away? But there's no fridge around."

"That means only one thing." She took a bite off of the pear. "You gotta consume it immediately. Pay it up."

[ Moh, it's not my fault if your wallet's empty, zura... ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"You're making a vlog, Kan-chan?"

"Shuka-chan said Ta-kun can help me, zura. If it gets me a buck or two, I can't really complain, you know~"

"A video on bushcraft?"

"Nah! I'm too fashionista for that! I gunna do a cosplay, zura!"

[ You haven't seen the many sides of me, zura. ;D ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Hiyah everyone!" yelled Kanako entering the clubroom. "Who would like to try on these cat-ears I got?"

The gang looked unimpressed. "Don't you have anything people haven't come up with already?" asked Anju.

"Oh, and here's some cat paws, zura! If you don't like the ears."

"You clearly didn't hear me..."

"And here's cat food for snack."

"Alright!" smiled Shuka. "Let's all get those exciting cat-ears, right guys?!"

[ Zurahahaha! Don't I just have the dandiest ideas? ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

[ Touuuu-yakun~! Just tried a new cream, zura. Ar'nt muh cheeks kizzable now???? Here... touch my cheek with yours! ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Touya-kuuuuun..." whimpered Kanako.

One look at her notebook told him of her entire predicament. "You haven't done any of the Math problems?"

"Word problems make my head spin, zura. Too many stuff to look for..."

He turned the notebook to a blank page and began drawing a table. "I think this will do the trick. Let me explain. Pay attention, OK?"

[ I don't actually hate Math that much, just the word problems. ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Hora! Touya-kun, how about a little yoyo show, zura? Look at my mad skills... Wah----!"

"..."

"Ah... Ahahahaha...."

[ No-no! Not that! Don't take a video of me like that, zuraaaaa! ]

                    ° ° ° ° °

"Wow," breathed Kanako picking up a potato she just dug out of the ground, "this one's perfect, zura! This crop is just marvelous!"

"Are we having fries?" "We could, zura. But this variety was made to be mashed. You like mashed?"

"Sure, go ahead."

[ I can make a million recipes out of potatoes. ]
