Chapter 2:

How to NOT interrogate someone!

Eh…Malva Girl?

I wasn’t exactly an outdoor person but gym had always been my favourite subject of the day for two reasons:

No work, and

…NO WORK!

However, this time there was another reason:

It was the one class I had with Shinji Nakamura.

Now under normal circumstances that particular fact would be under my list of cons for gym class but today was no normal circumstance;

today was the day I find my crush!

(Yeah I know, if you’re new here that sounds kinda weird just bear with me here.)

So when the bell rang for the last lesson of the day I practically leapt out of my seat…and bruised my knee on the chair!

Darn it, how am I supposed to talk to Shinji now??

Fortunately for me Shinji was not just the school’s number one drama student but the world’s number one drama queen and he was sitting out on gym practice as well on the basis of a fracture…on his nail?

And they call me dramatic!

As I took a seat on a bench opposite the school’s track field I overheard Coach saying something like:

“Alright everybody today I’m gonna get you all in shape for the upcoming sports day! I want twenty laps around the track with no breaks! Are you ready kids?”

Now there’s nothing wrong with being enthusiastic about your job but it depends on the job. I mean, an enthusiastic businessman is one thing but an enthusiastic prison guard? Yeah that’s just weird…Enthusiastic prison guard huh? Sounds kinda like Coach to me!

I smiled a little as I looked down at my bruise.

Maybe it was a blessing in disguise after all?

At that exact moment a tall averagely-built kid removed his glasses and sat down next to me, a massive bandage on his left hand.

A little excessive but okay…

I wracked my brain trying to think of conversation starters. This was the perfect opportunity but I just couldn’t seem to think of anything! All that I could think about was that abnormal amount of gauze on his hand.

“Quite the tragedy isn’t it?” said a prentious voice next to me.

“You uh talking to me?” I replied, looking up surprised. Had I been I staring?

“No I was talking to Rosa Parks- DO YOU SEE ANYONE ELSE SITTING ON THIS BENCH STARING AT MY WOUND!” Yip, I was staring.

“Okay, geez. No need to be so aggressive, sorry for staring at your…wound,” I said reluctantly.“Soooo…how’s it going?” I asked in as conversational a manner as I could. This is so unsmooth, I hope it works…

“Um…do you wanna touch it?” replied Shinji, holding his bandage up to me. It definitely didn’t!

“EW NO THAT’S DISGUSTING!”

“Then why are you talking to me? Treyson, the guy who I’ve traded words with about three times in my humble career.”

“Um it’s five and a half.”

“I’m sorry?”

“We’ve spoken five and a half times.”

“How do you…wait, how does that even!”

“Look, okay you got me,” I said, coming clean, “I wanna ask you something about the Spring Fair.”

“Ah yes…the one that we lost hmm?” (Oh yeah if you didn’t know there was a prize to whoever made the most money).

“Uh yeah that one…um so anyway I was under the impression that I was the only one who pitched up for our stall but um,” I swallowed,

Why was this so embarrassing to say?

“There was this girl-“

“A GIRL…I uh mean, a girl you say?” said Shinji, trying to regain his composure, “and what about it?”

“Well I was wondering if you knew who it could be, you see she didn’t sound like anyone from our grade so-“

“I see,” said Shinji sharply, “well can you give me a description? A few volunteers from other grades helped set our stall up because someone was late,” he added pointedly, “maybe it was one of them?” Bingo!

“Well yeah the thing is…okay this is gonna sound crazy,” I said with a chuckle as I scratched the back of my head, “I didn’t actually see her…except for her hand. Would that help? It was pretty pale and small and it felt really soft-“

Shinji’s frown stopped me from blabbering.

That was wayyy too much information wasn’t it!

“Um I mean it looked really soft! I wouldn’t know how it felt of course, that would be crazy! Am I right?” I said, faking a laugh in an attempt to cover my rookie mistake.

“So anyway as I was saying, maybe you could give me a list of those-“

“You…held her hand?”

“I- I just told you it was a joke-“

“You held her hand.”

“Okay maybe just a little-“

“WHAT WERE YOU DOING HOLDING A GIRL’S HAND IN THE MIDDLE OF A SPRING FAIR COMPETITION?? SO THE REASON WE LOST WAS BECAUSE OF YOU!!” Shinji said so loudly I nearly fell off my seat.

Oh gimme a break, the rest of our team didn’t even show up!

“Um…well by that logic the reason we lost was because of me and her right?” I said, as I backed away slowly, “Now, if I just had that list maybe I could send her your way and you could tell her just how-“

“SHUT YOUR TREASONOUS MOUTH!” screamed Shinji as he lunged for me.

What the heck is happening!?

I dodged out the way and leapt to my feet as I raced across the field.

Wow I guess my bruise healed faster than I thought!

The happiness I had felt was short lived as I glanced back behind me only to see Shinji hot on my tail. Yikes! What am I gonna do now?? Maybe if I run past coach I’ll be safe…

“Excellent job boys! See what I mean class? Injuries are all in the mind!”

Oh he’s a prison torturer I forgot.

“AND I’M GONNA GIVE YOU AN INJURY YOU WON’T FORGET SOON TREYSON BALLERRRRRR!”

As I sprinted past the school gate I noticed a black convertible pull up just outside the school gate and roll it’s front window down.

“Get in if you wanna live,” said the rider as the back door popped open. This is so bizarre!

“Zach, you seriously need to have a personality change, you get dodgier every day,” I said whilst scrambling inside.

As the car lurched forward I looked back at the huffing Shinji and burst out laughing.

“Woohoo! Now that’s what I call an exit!” I said as I gave Zach a fist pump.

“You got it man but…who’s Zach?” said Za-…wait…

A young man with piercings and green hair turned back to look at me.

“It’s me your ol’ pal, Jocky!”

WHAAAAAAT???

and we are NOT friends!
