Chapter 2:

Sarcophagus

Spiral

Blindfolded, bound, only his mouth free, the captor struggled to life in the darkness of the invisible room around him.

“Where am I? Where are the others?” He asked the void.

“Don’t worry. We haven’t left the warehouse... yet. We’ll let you go once we’re done here… not that there’s anyone left to see.” By the sound of it, the same boy who’d kicked the merc’s face in was the one taunting him.

“You… killed them? All of them?”

“Not me. Not… many, at least. No, that honor goes to him.”

“It’s your turn to be tied up.” The familiarly cold register of a boy, his former captive, echoed beside the first of his interrogators.

“No, no… that doesn’t track… you two are Spiral dogs, aren’t you? You can’t do this… your boss, he had a deal with us. You aren’t terrorists. Outside agencies like yours are supposed to keep your distance, that’s how this works.”

“In a time of… special circumstance, you gotta bend the rules. And I’d say the circumstances we’re in are pretty damn special right now.” Fox brushed away any hope the man still had.

“Package A9183. What is it?” Raven was not so indirect in getting what he wanted out of him. The prisoner hung his head low.

“Ohhh, bingo. Spill.” The kicking boy was raring to go. It was pointless. He let himself be gutted by the children.

“We… call it the Sarcophagus. Shipped it off days ago, God knows where.”

“Bullshit. Come on, we went through the trouble to get you here alive, you could at least tell the truth. Raven, doesn’t that make you mad?”

“Sure does.”

“Get me here…? Hey, I thought we were still at base…” Woozy though the captive was, more than a few things about this strange interrogation felt off to him…

He heard Raven sigh.

“Your boss and your buddies are long gone. You were just a hired gun, you’ve got no part in this. The smart thing to do… the only thing to do- is talk. Or do you want… to end up like them?”

He felt the pit in his stomach sink even deeper before opening his mouth once again. He didn’t know it, but from deep within the building, their interactions were being monitored- somewhere, a man listened intently as the hostage dropped everything he had to offer out onto the table.

“…That’s all I know.”

“See, that wasn’t so hard.” Fox joked, nearly laughing at his captive.

“Now let me go.”

“Let you go?” The same agent snickered. “We left your playhouse hours ago. Most of your guys are still kicking back there- not that we’ll need a single one of them after everything you just told us. Q, lights?”

“Well done, agents.” The captive bit his worthless tongue as the interrogation room lit up for Fox and Raven, Q congratulating them once again.

“Welcome to Spiral HQ, asshole.”

Fox delivered a fist into the man’s covered eyes, if only to put him back to sleep for the time being. He and Raven had a mission to attend to.
