Chapter 3:

At The Pathology

The Marionettist

Marek was eager and curious. "Hey, Stefan. What can you tell me about the killer's profile?!' He didn't even look at Marek. "It looks like we have a very aggressive individual here. Look at her face.”

He pointed his finger at her head. “She's covered in bruises and the number of knife wounds...” he sighed. “…I've counted twenty so far and I'm not done yet. Poor girl, she must have made someone angry... a lot, she was probably also a rape victim.

But I will be able to tell you for sure, only when I have the body on the table. I don't understand today's youth and their fashion sense. Why do they dress up like dolls? Otherwise, I was able to remove something from her fist; a piece of jewelry that she was clutching in her hand just before she died. It took me a while to get it out, as her body was already in rigor mortis."

A large wrinkle appeared on Marek's forehead. Stefan handed him over a bag with something, that looked like a part of a necklace, that had been torn. Most of it was missing, only a gold pendant with a green gem and a piece of a gold chain. The eyelets on it were deformed because they were subjected to great force.

After some photo documentation, it was immediately sent for the expertise. His police, sixth sense told him, that this case would be classified as one of the more complex ones. He reached out to his fellow officers to find out more about any new evidence.

They kind of failed. They haven't found anything yet. Maybe something will emerge when they expand the perimeter. However, this made the whole case even more complicated. He had nothing else to do, so he started questioning the people around him. He was looking for someone who was a witness to this murder.

Even the interrogation of eyewitnesses did not bear any fruits. Marek returned to the station to reorganize the whole thing and start with solving the case. He didn't want to let it go, so that it does not become a cold case. But first of all, he needed to find out the identity of that poor victim and he had to be patient until new information came from Stefan; from the pathology.

Stefan finally called him after long hours to see him at the pathology as soon as possible. He was there immediately. Marek wanted to hear only positive news regarding this case. He hoped to make progress with his newfound knowledge and use it to catch the killer soon. Marek entered a nice-looking hospital. It was painted in bright colors and a pleasant smell wafted through the corridors.

He rushed into the elevator through the white sterile corridor and pressed the button for the ride to "hell"; to the morgue. He really hated that creepy place. Every time he visited this part of the hospital, he had a strange feeling, that the dead bodies were looking at him.

Here he could only smell the disinfection, and formaldehyde lingered in the air, rarely an odor of a decomposing body, blood, or feces. Some of the lamps didn't even work anymore and that gave that place an even more creepy aura.

A long straight corridor and at the end the dissection room with a large glass window for observation, right next to the door. A few bodies, that were taken out of the freezer were covered with only a piece of green sheet ready for inspection. Marek found Stefan in the middle of working on another body. He preferred not to go directly to him. His phobia was much stronger than his courage.

Stefan smiled and definitely followed him. Both of them raised their hands for greeting, but as soon, as Marek saw the bloodied gloves, he immediately moved his hand up. Stefan started to laugh out loud and in the meantime was taking them off.
