Chapter 17:
Beyond the shadows
The light blinded Timmy, who raised his hand to block it out. One step at a time, he slowly drew closer to his impending fate. He would be in a proper fight for the first time since he was in the academy. Now he could test what he had learned.
After stepping into the battle arena, he found himself greeted by a large grassy field, and surrounding it was a great hundred thousand of people.
The moment they stepped into the light, the already loud chattering rose a crescendo, until it seemed like all the surrounding people were shouting and cheering as loud as they could.
"Wow..." Brett muttered, as they walked to the center of the battle plain.
The field was wide, and it was 3 times the size of the academy's training room. Maybe even bigger, Timmy thought.
The announcer, Professor Mckinney announced their names before stating their test.
"For the first round, this group will have the task of taking down a monster. The monster assigned to them is an upper C rank monster, slimeskin fox!"
Right as he said that, a growl was heard from behind the group of students. They all spun around, and from a dark entrance with iron gates, something was heard. A silhouette was seen drawing closer to the gate, and then the gate lifted slowly.
As soon as it had fully opened, out walked a creature. Into light it walked, allowing it's dark red fur which seemed to be slick with slime to be seen. Rows of sharp teeth were clenched rather angrily, and the fox seemed ready to tear into the students flesh.
The fox was, obviously, not the size of a normal fox. It was a colassal creature, nothing like a normal fox. The fox opened its mouth, which seemed big enough to tear through an adult sized elephant with ease.
"Leah, what do you suggest we do? !" Brett shouted over the screaming of the crowds.
"Slimefur foxes are more vulnerable on the side of their bodies, that's where we should target our attacks. We should however, aim to immobilize it before killing it!"
"Will that work..." Kasuke asked, speaking for the first time that day. "We are mostly close range fighters..."
"True, and I'm not sure our energy balls will be good enough against that beast. I think since Brett has the most eye-catching abilities, he should stay before the fox and distract it. Then we'll take either side and attack. So, Kasuke, we'll take the right. You two take the other side."
After a mutual agreement, the group split up as intended. Brett stayed at the center of their formation, Leah and kasuke took one side and Timmy and Nina took another.
" You guys are going to have to take it down in the first wave of attacks, since there remains the possibility that the fox will ignore that guy and chase after one of your groups, since it might realize who the real threat is." Jago quipped in, from Inside Aldens head.
" Yes, I understand." Timmy said. He held out his hand summoned his weapon. A sharp blade, with a silver colored handle appeared. It was a medium grade sword he'd borrowed from the school weaponry.
He turned his head and glanced at Nina, who held in her hand a full black sword. Even the blade of the sword was the color of midnight.
On noticing him looking at her, Nina glanced at his sword before giving him a simple nod. Timmy returned the gesture, before focusing on the creature before him.
"Come on here, you malnourished puppy!" Brett held out his hands, and all around him, a bright yellow lightening began to crawl around his limbs. It jumped around him, and the tendrils of lightening kept growing in size, until he was surrounded by a thick blanket of electric current.
The fox snarled like a rabid animal on seeing the eye catching power, and it instantly began to sprint toward Brett. It's snout seemed to spear through as it ran, and it's intentions were clear in it's bloodthirsty predatory eyes.
Brett on the other hand, seemed unfazed by the animal charging at him. Instead, a smile broke the calm of his face, and in his right hand he began to form an energy ball.
"Don't blame me if you die in my one attack, it was self defense after all," He called, the lightning around him growing more intense.
The fox replied with an angry snarl, and it seemed to run even faster at Brett's mockery.
Brett sighed exaggeratingly before speaking," I warned you."
When the fox was a few dozen meters away from him, he held out his hand. The energy ball left his hand and shot through the air, leaving a trail of electric current in its path.
The energy ball connected, and it smashed into the wolf's head. What followed was picturesque. A yellow blanket of lightning covered every inch of the foxes body, so that it twisted and writhed in anguish.
The crowd let out a collective gasp, as they witnessed Brett's amazing ability. It was clear that nobody had expected him to have such spectacular powers, and had not considered him noteworthy.
The wolf on the other hand let out yelps of pain. The tendrils of lightning covering its body slowly dwindled, until nothing but a few strands of lightning remained.
Brett smiled, and dusted his hands.
"My work here is done."
A bird like screech escaped the creatures Jaws, and it's predatory eye refilled with a new emotion, though the desire within it did not change.
The emotion within it's eyes had evolved from a predacious yearning into an emotion of pure unbridled rage, and with it came the desire to tear into flesh, and destroy.
The fox began to move again, it's slender muscles working hard to carry it toward Brett. Brett stayed composed, as he watched the beast draw closer.
With every passing second, as the distance between them shorterned, Brett's time seemed to do the same. The crowd watched on with bated breath, and soon their agonizing patience paid off.
When his end seemed a few seconds away, a few shadows could be seen breaking through space, and into the Fox. Brett had showcased his flabbergasting attack, and now Timmy and the rest of his team had their chance.
Timmy gripped his sword tightly, and raised it high. Then, with a swing that could tear through the sky, he directed his blade toward the foxes knees.
The attack landed true, and Timmy did not alone hit his mark. Nina had sliced off the poor creatures leg altogether, while both Kasuke and Leah had landed crucial hits.
Like a sandcastle within a within a typhoon, the Slimefur fox went down, and a helpless whimper left it.
Timmy walked toward the animal, and lifted its blade, before looking at his teammates for permission.
Leah nodded, and Timmy did not hesitate. His sword drew a perfect arc in the sky, and in a matter of seconds, the fox lay limp, it's body unmoving.
Despite the repugnant situation, a look of complete indifference was found on Timmy's face. Leah cast a glance at him, and a thought passed her mind.
Were it some other person, she'd have no doubt the expression on their face was simply surface level but Timmy... Sometimes she wondered if he felt anything at all.
Fear, pain, or sorow?
Could she even call him human?
