Chapter 16:

Pre-competition

Beyond the shadows

Timmy opened his eyes, and felt his vision lose clarity as the blinding light of the sun attacked his eyes.
"So, guess you're up now?" Jago asked from within his head.
"Yes," Timmy sat up from where he slept. Today was the day of the trials, he guessed.
"Feeling nervous?"
"Nope."
"Yeah, that was a stupid question. If you weren't nervous after seeing me, I'm sure nothing will scare you."
Without further conversation, Timmy got up and got ready to head out. He jumped into the schools training gear, before making sure he had all his equipment.
" Let's go," He said to his companion.
" Yes sir," Said Jago who was in his mist form, floating on the bed. He looked like a storm cloud, grey and He hovered in the air before flying into Timmy's body.
Timmy left his room and headed out, the competition would take place in a battle arena away from the school building. He had to get there, first.
Timmy met up with Neo and the other boys in the seating room.
"Timmy! You're here," Neo said walking up to him.
"Hey."
"So, ready to fight?"
"Mhm. What about you? I did not hit you too hard yesterday?"
"Hahaha! I'm fine," Neo smirked. "I hope you never break the bones in your fingers."
"No, I'm fine." Timmy said shrugging.
Timmy just shrugged before the two headed out.

Soon they had met up with Lillie and Leah. After they had come together, they walked to the venue. On arriving, they realized that the arena was flooded with bodies.
"So many people..." Timmy gazed around at all of the different people rushing back and forth.
"Yep, plenty of people come to watch the tournament. Many important people too." Leah explained.
"It's a chance for our Academy to shine." Neo further added.
"Why?" Timmy questioned.
"Outsiders can witness the power as talent of our academy."
Timmy nodded in understanding, he gazed around at the many people, all from different cultures and races.
"Are normal people here?" Timmy asked.
"Normal..." Leah looked at him in confusion. "Ohhh... The gift less? Of course not. Only us with mystical capabilities can even be in this place. "
"gift less? That doesn't sound nice."
Leah raised her eyebrow at him before she realized. Timmy was still not used to being a gifted. He had lived his whole life without powers, so it was probable he would never properly adapt to the world of the gifted.
"You're right... Sorry." Leah tried to sound as sincere as she could, as she led the group of students to their class's waiting room.
"It is not a problem." Timmy replied, running his hand through his hair. It was pretty long now, though he couldn't put it in a ponytail.
Neo watched the exchange with surprise. Though he knew that Leah was very kind and friendly, he also knew she hated apologizing. Unless it was for something severe, she would avoid doing it. Leah was a very proud woman. That he knew.
Timmy seemed to have changed her... Humbled her, in a way. If Neo had to admit, he was jealous. His entire period of knowing Leah, he had harbored feelings toward her. Even after how close they were, he didn't make much of an impact on her life but Timmy...
It seemed like her whole life now rotated around him. What was it about him that made him better then her? Neo sighed and looked away from Timmy.
He realized that Lillie's friend, was staring at him. He forgot what her name was, but the moment his gaze landed on her, she quickly looked away.
"Huh? Weird..." Neo thought to himself.
Very soon, the group reaches their meeting room. Inside, professor Stephanie, who was their form educator stood waiting.
"Good, now everyone is here..." The professor said, looking around the meeting room."So, the format for the competition is out, and I'm told the competitions format. There will be 3 stages in the competition.
Firstly, we have the group competition, where you will be divided into groups of 5. Then you will have to defeat a monster. You will be judged by your performance and you will be assessed using points.
Then, you will be divided into groups of 4, and each group will compete against the 3 other groups of the other classes. Again, you will be allocated points for your performance.
Lastly, you will have individual matches, and there will be 5 participants from every class.
The class with the most points will win the competition."
Timmy absorbed all the information like a sponge. It seemed the more important competitions were the group ones.
He would have to find a way to assist his team to the best of his ability. At this point, he could only use his kite technique, and energy ball to fight. Also, originally he had to send energy into his limbs in order to fight or move but now with algorithm, all he had to do was activate his kite technique. Everything else was taken care of.
He still hadn't trained enough to move around well with the technique so that was definitely a downside. He's have to get used to that in battle.
The kite technique mainly improved the speed and agility of his attacks, and that also increased his attacking power. For a combat art that increased his strength, he has the elephant rage technique. He still couldn't use it too much as he would waste energy using it.
His energy ball was the only long range attack he had, so he worked on making it as effective as possible. He mainly did this by decreasing its size, and increasing its energy level. Doing this, he could have an energy ball at normal size, with much more attacking prowess.
Furthermore, he tried to create as many energy balls as possible, doing that, he could increase his chances of landing an attack.
A clever idea he's gotten from Jago was to create smaller, yet more densely packed energy balls, so that it would be easier to control the energy balls and attack the opponents.
Lastly, he tried to increase the speed, and accuracy at which he launched them. His attacks now had the lightning element integrated into them, making them a little more powerful.
After all of that training, he finally found himself ready for the competition. Additionally he'd learned something new, and it was his trump card.
"So firstly, I'll announce the team leaders. Leah, Neo,Nino,Amy, and Amari. Team 1 members will be Leah, Timmy, Nina, Brett and Kasuke. Team 2 will be Neo, lizzie, Colt, Luke and Gizelle. Team 3 will be Nino, Brock, Lenna, and Lewis. Team 4 will be Amy, Onver, Musashi, Leo, and Arjen. Team 5 will be Amari, Charlotte, Robin, Yves and Lee. Now, any questions? "

Amy raised her had, somewhat hesitantly it seemed.

" Um...Professor..."

"Yes, Amy?"

"I-I don't think I'm fit to be a team leader..." She dropped her gaze to her feet, and played with her fingers nervously.

Professor Stephanie smiled before replying. "So, are you doubting my ability to choose a fitting team leader?"

Amy grew flustered.

"Ah- I wouldn't dare do that..."

"Excellent. If you trust my ability to choose a sufficient team leader, then test your ability to meet my expectations."

The teacher smiled at Amy reassuringly. Amy responded with a nod, though she didn't seem convinced.

"She's got a soft personality. Understanding, kindness, tolerance, patience and selflessness... All these leadership qualities she has. On the other hand, the grit needed to make difficult decisions or to stay calm in stressful situations, I'm not sure she has that... "

Jago went off rattling, probably trying to show off his wiseness again, Timmy thought.

" I heard that! " Jago yelled, killing a few of Timmy's braincells in the process.

"Okay," Alden mentally replied. "But she will be fine. Amy is clever, and she likes winning."

"Congratulations, you've said more then 2 sentences in a row."

Timmy ignored him.

"Alright, get ready, team 1!" Professor Stephanie said."You guys are first."

Leah, Nina, Timmy, Brett and Kasuke got ready to go out. Timmy was familiar with everyone in the group but Kasuke. Kasuke was quiet, and he didn't like being around others. That was why he and Timmy never interacted.

"3 introverts in one team!? You'll have a great time communicating!" Lillie let out a little giggle, as she observed Timmy's team.

"Stop teasing others and worry about yourself," Neo raised his hand and landed a chop on Lillie's head.

"Ouch! Fine, fine, sorry!" She cried out, shielding her head from her brother's relentless strikes.

"Good luck out there you guys," Neo said, a smile on his face. Timmy noticed his eyes momentarily land on Leah.

"Let's go," Professor Stephenie led Timmy's team out of the meeting room. They walk through many corridors, until they reached the tunnel that led into the battlefield.

The Professor turned to face the group.

"Remember, the points lie in both teamwork and individual capabilities. Use your individual skills to best help your team, understood?"

"Yes, professor," the group responded with an almost silent reply.

"You all sound like dead bodies, really. Now go out there!"

Timmy turned his gaze to the light of the end of the tunnel. He was ready, 4 months of constant training would be tested in that ring.

The sounds and cheers of the crowds could be heard, and though that was the case, hardly anyone in his group seemed nervous.

"Come on guys," Said Leah as she took a step forward, toward the bright light at the end of the tunnel."Let's win this."
