Chapter 16:

Attacked

The Marionettist

Today, Marek did not allow her to go to work. According to him, she should have stayed home and rested. Patricia agreed to what he asked of her, but two hours later she disappeared outside in her "true form". She boarded the bus without her black wig.

She had no idea that it could be dangerous for her. After arriving at the police station, Marek became upset. He was worried about her health, Stefan immediately called and insisted that Marek come to him immediately to discuss something about the victim's new body. He didn't want Patricia to go home alone, so he took her with him to pathology.

At Stefan's workplace, he explained that the victim had been hit by something small, but large enough to be the cause of her death. He even found some white color between the strands of her hair. Probably from painted dross, maybe from furniture.

They remembered seeing some such furniture at Mrs. Neruda's apartment. For the first time, did they have a clue that could lead them to the murderer or the murderers? Maybe she could have had an accomplice.

Marek left Patrícia with Stefan to look after her. Marek immediately picked up his cell phone and called the station. He ordered them to arrange a permit to search the apartment and meet him in front of Mrs. Nerudova's apartment building. He got into the car and drove off.

The old lady opened the door for them and was surprised to see so many policemen. After being asked, she let them in without hesitation. Unfortunately, nothing was found or missing that could be considered as a murder weapon. They found themselves at a dead end again.

Marek apologized for bothering her and thanked her for her cooperation, and finally, they left. Disappointed, he drove back to the police station to do the necessary paperwork. Meanwhile, Patricia was killing... time in the morgue.

People would think she should be afraid in the presence of soulless bodies. However, it didn't even occur to her and it didn't bother her like Marek. On the contrary, she was very curious and entertained Stefan with questions. He couldn't stop laughing.

Sometimes they joked and enjoyed each other's company, especially Stefan. His "clients" were mostly silent, if you know what I mean. After two o'clock she received a call from Marek, who ended the investigation of Mrs. Nerudova for the day. He planned to change the car and was determined to pick her up from the morgue and take her home.

She didn't want to waste anyone's time, so she said goodbye to Stefan and left the hospital to walk. It was already dark, but she didn't mind. She knew this neighborhood very well. The air was cool in the cloudy autumn weather. She walked opposite Marek towards the police station. It wasn't that far away anyway.

However, there was something she didn't notice at all. The dark person who had been slowly stalking her all this time. Marek drove his vehicle in her direction in his personal black car. He could see her strolling on the sidewalk on the other side of the river, but she hadn't noticed him yet.

He rolled his eyes and laughed, but his smile froze when he saw… HIM. A tall, dark figure draped in a black hoodie and dark jeans. He followed her with a slow step and with both hands in his pockets. He couldn't turn around for another hundred meters, so he stepped on the gas and hurried after her.

At that moment, the stalker became the attacker. He grabbed her from behind and held a knife under her throat. He dragged her into a dark, narrow alley. Patricia remained calm, silent, and awaited to see what would happen next.

Marek stopped the car and jumped out of it. He was faster than the car alarm. He saw an unknown man harassing Patricia... Marek slowed down, crept up, and was about to jump on his back. The guy got nervous.

Patricia was too stubborn to let herself be dragged into his hiding place. He shook her off to the ground, she fell on her butt. She let out a small hurt cry and raised her pained eyes to him. He just waved the knife in front of her face, which glistened in the street light.

Marek saw it as his chance to catch the attacker. He jumped at him from behind and a fight began. Both were reaching for the knife. No one could get it. Despite the fact that the attacker was taller than Marek, both were equally strong, so no chance.

Patricia was confused and had no idea what to do. Her eyes searched for something she could use as a weapon to protect Marek. She found a branch nearby under a tree took it and hit him on the back. The attacker was unfazed.

Still, he overpowered Marek. They both fell to the ground, rolling together in the dust. The knife disappeared and was nowhere to be seen. Patricia ended up on all fours frantically rummaging through the leaves to find him. The fighting and rolling continued.

The dangerous dark man did not have enough power. Marek threw him a little further. That long struggle and fighting brought them to the bridge. The knife was still somewhere in the leaves. Realizing that he could not win, the stranger stood up and ran towards Patricia; he pushed her aside. She fell to the ground on her left side. It had already gotten better, so it didn't hurt her that much.

The guy grabbed the knife, which he saw with a blade sticking out of the leaves, and when he turned, he stabbed it straight into Marek, who was behind his heels. Blood spurted from his wound. Marek groaned in pain. The expression of fear was visible in Marek's eyes. The attacker started to walk and Marek backed away.

He pushed him closer and closer towards the bridge. With the blade in Marek's right side of his stomach, he could not move freely, only move like a marionette, controlled by a puppeteer. The attacker just wanted to get rid of Marek. They were already near the corner of the bridge.

His plan was to kick him over the railing into the water and it would wash away his body and the evidence. Patricia looked up and saw what was happening. She didn't think, she just ran straight after them. Before she could catch up, the guy was already throwing Marek over the railing.

At the last moment, she pushed him away, grabbed Marek, and together they fell into the high icy water. The attacker panicked, was completely beside himself, and did not know what to do. The current was very strong and made them disappear very quickly. Despite the force of the water, she clung to Marek like a pincer and even successfully kept them both above the surface.

After a few meters, she and Marek managed to swim close to the shore. She was exhausted and inhaled a certain amount of water. Patricia knew that the killer surely wasn't giving up and would be looking for them. She turned her head back, from where they were swimming and she probably noticed him already.

She grabbed Marek by his shoulders and dragged him into the nearest bush. She gave him first aid in a hurry. The knife was gone. He probably had pulled it out of him as he tossed Marek over the railing or it disappeared in the depths of the river.

Marek's injury was really serious and had to be stopped. Fortunately, the ice water constricted his blood vessels, so he was relatively safe at that moment. But on the other hand, when he gets warmer, it will probably start bleeding profusely. She was well aware of that.

Raising her hands over his wounded man, she removed her shawl and stuffed it into his wound. He could talk a bit, but he was slowly going into shock and was very weak. Patricia tried to calm him down and reassure him that he was safe. She rested her forehead against his and whispered soothing words.

Suddenly she heard a sound. She squirmed after the noise. It was the murderer. She still had that little tracking device. After the night of "Goldilocks", she knew she would definitely need it one day. That time has come.

She immediately pressed the button and put it in Marek's palm. Patricia gave him a kiss on the forehead like he did then. "I'll see you later. Just be strong and hold on for a little while until they come to your rescue. If something happens to me, I ..." She smiled. "No! I'll be fine, see you later."
