Chapter 1:

A Wonderful Life

Useless Bones

I jump awake, my heart racing, sweating like I was in a pool, and I sincerely feel something is wrong. I whip my head around, looking to see where I am, but I’m still in my crappy dorm room with the morning sun shining through my shades. Wait, morning sun? “OH FUCK!” I yell into my tiny room, reverberating back to me louder than I thought. I’m late for class! I’m supposed to leave before sunlight!

I jump out of bed but put too much force in my jump, and my head smashes into the ceiling. I fall to my knees and feel some crumbles of drywall on my head. I look at the mirror in front of me. My normal brown eyes are as average as every other day. I bend my head down to check for blood in my straight brown hair with whisps of curls on the ends. I don't see any, but it still hurts. I glance at the ceiling through my mirror and see a hole in it.

It's best not to worry about that right now. I need to get to class. I throw on some random clothes at the top of my drawer, grab a piece of gluten-free bread, and race out the door. I put my bread in my mouth as I run down the stairs, trying to get my jacket and backpack on.

The Stairway in my dorm is rather small for its size. Just like someone else I know… The staircase curve resembles an n as it loops back and forth. I run through the door leading to the stairway that looks like an escape staircase with dull white lights and cement walls with a metal railing running down on both the outside and inside.

I lunge downwards, skipping a few steps, and land hard on the next one. I see the bread I’m holding in my mouth crumble away and hit the floor with a smack, practically turning into dust.

“FUCK! Not my bread! Why does gluten-free bread suck so much! it crumbles easily, and it tastes like SHIT!”

I yell in anger, staring at the pile of dust you would never know used to be bread.

I sigh and start running down my stairs again. As I turn a corner, I see a new-looking girl with pretty short brown hair that goes to her shoulders, heading up, looking around, holding binders. The way I was heading, I would run right into her, but I decided to try something every guy wants to do. I jump, turn on my side, and push my legs off the outside railing on the staircase's landing so all my momentum changes to the decline of the stairs.

I lunged past her, just barely missing her, and saw that she had a nice-looking pair of boobs, and I regretted not running into her a little as they looked like airbags. I thought while wondering why she was here, and I called out to her as I was flying by;

“This is the guy's dorm, why are you he-”

Mid-sentence, I realized I didn't think how to land. I could only think to say

“Fu-“

A loud ringing filled the empty concertante stairway and then my head as I slammed into the railing on the lower landing of the stairs. I collapse to the floor, limp and unable to move, and I only thought, This must be what that bread felt like.

I remain still, at least I think, but my head still keeps speeding up, and I feel like I’m stuck in a riptide, unable to breathe. Then I heard a female voice break me out of it, saying,

“Oh my gosh! Are you ok??”

As the girl from before comes rushing down the stairs. I stumble on my feet as she helps hold me up.

“I’m… totally good.”

“Are you sure? I can help you to the nurse.”

“Yep, 80% sure I’m fine.”

“I’m also not a student. I’m a new teacher here. I was looking for the only student who signed up for extracurricular my class. Do you know where Zeake is?”

I cover my mouth as a weird burb comes out that feels like it came from my gut.

“Yeah, it's me.”

“That's great. I wanted to thank you for signing up for it, but I don't think the school will allow The study of human willpower to go on if no one else joins.”

“Thanks”

I say as I muddle down the stairs to the first floor. I should not have done that. That was not cool at all.
