Chapter 6:

Unraveling Shadows

The Con Artist’s Con

~~~The Following Morning~~~
With a determined spirit, Jack meticulously drafted a study timetable, intending to balance work, studies, and his fervent aspiration of becoming a professional gamer. The laptop he had procured served as the gateway to pursuing his dream of conquering the world gaming tournament.
Allow me to introduce you to Jack.
His educational journey led to a degree in computer science. A humble individual, he sought no grandeur—just a stable job, a significant other to share life’s joys, and a modest sanctuary to call home.
His fascination began with a YouTube video showcasing a friend competing in an online gaming tournament. Donations streamed in during the live event, catching Jack's attention. This glimpse into his friend's gaming team working tirelessly to secure victory sparked a longing within Jack. Despite two prior losses in the tournament finals, this time, their efforts bore fruit as they clinched the coveted win. Witnessing their joyous celebration ignited an unexplained desire within Jack—a yearning for that elusive elation. He experimented with various endeavors but found no passion that could propel him forward.
A serendipitous encounter at the supermarket reunited Jack with his gaming friend. As they conversed, the story of his friend's struggles and triumphs unfolded, revealing the grit and perseverance that led to their success.
“Congratulations on the tournament win! That was truly incredible!” Jack praised his friend.
"Jack, right?" His friend recognized him.
"Yes, indeed!"
"Join us tonight; we're streaming for an orphanage fundraiser."
Jack gladly accepted the invitation, eager to delve deeper into his friend's motivations and the journey that led them to triumph. The words his friend shared about the path to success resonated deeply with Jack.
The following day, Jack immersed himself in the intricacies of the ShadowQuest game, uncovering its layers of complexity. Surprisingly, the game stirred a newfound fascination within him, compelling him to plan the acquisition of a gaming laptop using his hard-earned savings from his job.
~~~Present Day~~~

Jack's days were consumed by a relentless juggling act between work, study, and gaming. Despite the demanding schedule, his determination remained resolute.

However, tranquility shattered one fateful day when the neighborhood was thrown into disarray. A ghastly discovery of a partially encased body in cement on a rooftop sent shockwaves rippling through the community. Fear and uncertainty permeated the once-peaceful streets, as police investigations unfolded.

Breaking news broadcasts warned citizens against opening doors to strangers, heightening the sense of unease.

As Jack contemplated visiting the site, an unexpected visitor arrived at his doorstep. A new neighbor introduced himself as Louis, a training manager at ShiftSync company. Amid casual exchanges about their lives, they sought solace in mundane conversations, trying to make sense of the recent unsettling events.

Determined to seek closure about the situation on the adjacent street, Jack and Louis ventured there, only to be met by police barricades and a scene of disarray. Overhearing an officer's warning about the perils of unsafe online practices, they retreated, their minds swirling with unanswered questions.

Louis, grappling with the solitude of his new abode, extended an invitation for Jack to spend the night. However, visibly perturbed by recent events and hesitant to step into unknown territories, Jack politely declined, citing work commitments the following day.
