Chapter 2:

In the Glow of Fireflies

Death Punker

Pluto perched atop the fence, his gaze fixed on Rex below. Rex, sensing Pluto's presence, greeted him with a knowing smile. "You're late," Rex remarked, his voice laced with a hint of amusement.

Pluto's response was silence, his eyes reflecting a quiet determination.

Rex chuckled softly, a smirk playing on his lips. "People always look down on someone," he mused, "but they often find themselves looking up to them in the end."

Pluto averted his eyes and looked towards the city. Rex told him to keep up and swung towards the city. Pluto followed, swinging faster as they reached the heart of the city. They swung above goons, and one of them caught a glimpse of something in the sky. He saw a pigeon looking at him and shooed it away but ended up getting hit by its droppings. Meanwhile, Rex swung through the donut sign of a shop while doing a drumroll, amazing Pluto. Rex winks and swings forward, with Pluto following suit.

Both ended up on top of a building with stairs leading below to a roller skate shop. Signs indicated that Pluto was the target. The place was bustling with customers, bidding like crazy. Pluto cracked his bones and swung in, grabbing the skates. But as he swung, one of his yo-yo strings broke, causing him to fall into the crowd. The crowd looked at him with sudden emotions, but he smiled and said hi, prompting Rex to facepalm. People got angry and moved to catch him, but he managed to escape through their legs. As he backed up, he accidentally touched his back to a goon. He looked up, saw the goon, and hit him with his yo-yo before swinging away. Rex blew his cover as a goon climbed the building, forcing him to swing too.

The goons were prepared as they emerged from everywhere. Rex performed a tornado in mid-air, hitting three goons who jumped him. He rolled on the ground and started swinging again, causing the goons to run. Pluto got cornered, but Rex swung by and told him to follow. Pluto swung behind as a goon tackled him through a glass window of a store onto a terrace. He knocked the goon who grabbed his leg and found himself surrounded by closing goons. He closed his eyes, opened them, and continued swinging, stepping on the third goon's face. He shot himself into the sky, did a somersault, and landed both knees in a goon's face, knocking him down. Two goons lost their balance and fell as they reached a dark alley. They smiled at each other as they entered the darkness, disappearing. As the goons started searching, they followed, swiftly taking them out one by one.

One goon caught Pluto by the neck, but before he could strangle him, Rex smacked the skate bard he carried on the goon's head, knocking him unconscious. Both nodded and swung away.

Both ended up on the seashore with a campfire that Rex built. As Pluto sat with a downturned mouth, Rex put a bun on his head and told him to eat up. Pluto, mourning over the lost yo-yo, had lost his hunger. Rex sat beside him as they looked towards the burning fire. Rex asked him to pass him a skate, and as Pluto reached his bag, he saw only one skate. Pluto was about to cry, but Rex said, with a smile on misfortune, that it would do and suggested they trade. He threw a skate board towards Pluto and said he hoped it would help him.

Rex stood and said, "See, Pluto, being free may sometimes portray you as rude or stupid. Embrace it. As long as your heart denies the guilt feeling, there is nothing wrong or right in this world. Some are born poor like us, some rich like those in cities, but we made them chase us." Pluto said, "That's because we stole their money." Rex replied, "No, we don't. We just steal small, just to survive another day. Pluto, don't let me or any other tie you. Run wild, run free, such that even death couldn't catch you." And he smiled big. Pluto looked up to Rex, seeing how he shined more than the full moon. Rex swung away, leaving Pluto gazing at the stars.
