Chapter 4:
Rolliphs'
Protea, a wiry Rolliph with eyes that flickered like bioluminescent moss, shuffled a translucent map between his clawed hands. Its surface pulsed with a faint green glow, revealing a labyrinth of twisting tunnels and hidden chambers.
"We Rolliphs prioritize self-preservation," Protea rasped, his voice a dry whisper that echoed in the cavernous chamber. "While we can't offer the luxury of our company, this map will guide you through the treacherous passages."
Jack, his heart heavy with the weight of the mission, reached for the map. Before his fingers brushed the cool surface, a hand, smooth and warm, rested on his arm. It was Anna, her emerald eyes sparkling with fierce determination.
"No map necessary," she declared, her voice ringing with a quiet defiance. "These tunnels hold no secrets for me. I'm going with you, Jack."
Protea's brow furrowed, a flicker of surprise battling with admiration in his gaze. "Anna," he rumbled, his voice laced with concern, "your bravery is unmatched. But are you certain of this path? It is fraught with peril."
Anna straightened her slender shoulders, her chin held high. "Absolutely. After all, it was I who led Jack here. The least I, and perhaps a few friends, can do is ensure his safe passage."
"Friends?" Protea echoed, a single eyebrow arching sardonically.
The cavern entrance rustled, and Iris, his iridescent wings catching the dim light, sauntered in alongside Remy, a young Rolliph with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
"Looks like a four-person expedition then," Protea muttered, a hint of grudging respect in his voice.
A flurry of hurried activity filled the chamber. Provisions were packed, luminous stones were gathered, and hushed goodbyes were exchanged. As the last embers of twilight faded, the unlikely quartet ventured out, their forms swallowed by the inky blackness of the tunnel entrance.
The air grew thick and stale as they delved deeper, the silence broken only by the rhythmic drip of unseen water and the occasional scuttle of unseen creatures. The tunnel walls, slick with moisture, pressed close, sending shivers down Jack's spine.
Suddenly, Anna, her hand raised in a silent signal, halted the group. "Listen," she murmured, her keen ears detecting a faint vibration that traveled through the earth. The ground trembled ever so slightly, a tremor that sent a jolt of unease through Jack.
"Oh no," whispered Iris, his voice laced with dread as he unfurled a strange device from his bag. It resembled a lantern, but emitted a soft, otherworldly glow that pulsed rhythmically.
Remy, his face pale in the eerie light, confirmed their worst fears. "A swarm of rhino beetles," he croaked. "And by the sounds of it, a large one."
The ground erupted in a frenzy of chittering mandibles and scuttling legs. Dozens of rhino beetles, hulking creatures with carapaces like obsidian and glowing red eyes, surged towards them. Panic seized the group. Anna and Iris, their movements honed by years of navigating the treacherous tunnels, bolted forward. Anna grabbed Jack's hand, her grip firm and desperate.
"This way!" she cried, leading him deeper into the labyrinthine passage. Iris, his wings shimmering like a moth in the darkness, swooped back, grabbing Anna's free hand and pulling her into the air. Their forms disappeared into the darkness above, leaving Jack and Remy alone in the face of the oncoming swarm.
Remy, burdened by a limp, stumbled and fell. Fear choked Jack, but the thought of abandoning Remy was unthinkable. Adrenaline coursing through his veins, Jack scooped Remy onto his back, the young Rolliph clinging to him with a whimper.
His lungs burned, his legs screamed in protest, but Jack pushed on, the thunderous roar of the beetles echoing behind him. Two tunnel exits loomed ahead, offering a glimmer of hope.
The flickering light of Remy's illuminator cast dancing shadows on the tunnel walls as Jack surged towards the right exit. Each pounding step sent tremors through the damp earth, seemingly attracting the ravenous swarm. The beetles, relentless in their pursuit, surged out from the darkness, their glistening black forms a tide of menace.
Jack, his vision blurring with exertion, veered sharply left at Remy's frantic shout. But fate seemed to conspire against them. Just as they reached the exit, the ground heaved, and a monstrous beetle, bigger than any they had encountered before, erupted from the tunnel floor, blocking their escape.
In a sudden turn of events, Jack and Remy tumbled into the hole, disappearing from sight.
