Chapter 4:

Summer

Shift

It was when I was walking back to the dorms I noticed him fallowing me. Predators have good senses. Prey has just as good though. My ears picked up on him, twitching. Then I’m bounding forward him at my heels. One thought goes though my mind: He’s trying to kill me. I leap up onto the dorm house ledge. He tried leaping up at me. I walk carefully across the ledge. Then knock on a window with curtains, I recognize. Purple with silver stars.

“Yo Summer. You ok?” Ask Beatrice in a strong accent.

“No let me in. I think Red’s going to kill me.” She hears the barking and helps me inside. She’s dressed in all black leather. A spider shifter.

“You good girl?” She asks.

“Fine.” I say sitting on her bed. Her bed is black. Her roommates bed is as purple as the curtains. The butterfly shifter in front of me named Jess.

“You know I have just the thing for these kind of situations.” She talks low. Never know who’s going to overhear. “Have an abusive ex you need to get rid of she’s your girl. I’m sure she’d help you too. Down the hall to the left. A black snake spray painted on her door.” I follow her directions down the hall. I knock on the door with a snake. I give a shout moving back when I see the person who opens the door is wearing protective glasses holding a blow torch. Like Beatrix they wear all black, but they’re overalls instead, and shirt.

“Hey sorry to startle you I’m Brooke she, her. This is my roommate Oceana. Also she, her. She’s cool. I’m a snake shifter. She’s a beta fish shifter. Close the door will ya.” She puts down the torch on a desk covered in parts. Parts of what I have no idea. She sits down, and gestures politely for me to sit in the desk chair. I do so.

“Um Beatrix sent me.” I say. She nods.

“On sec.” She opens a desk draw and holds out a little glass bottle with bumps. I heard that little bottles, and vials back in day had that had poison had little bumps on them, so you knew even by touch what you were grabbing. She hands it to me. The glass is green, but the liquid is dark, and inky. “You only need half, but i’ll give you the whole bottle just in case.”

“Take this too.” Oceana opens a dresser drawer. Lifts out some clothes, and hands me what was hidden underneath. A small dagger, sheathed. I hold it in my hands.

“Most predators are cool. The rare few though that aren’t have claws, and teeth we don’t have. We gotta find our own weapons.” She says.

“Thank you.” I say, and leave.
