Chapter 9:
Shift
“You shouldn’t have a license.” I say not for the first time. My concentration is once again broken by her taking too sharp a turn.
“Forgive me for going fast. I only want to save my sister.” She says.
“You know I only meant-“ I begin.
“I know, I know I’m sorry. I’m feeling… snappy.” She means stressed overwhelmed, and extremely worried. And she’s never dealt well with anger. Still, she very rarely snaps at me.
“I know you’re worried about her. She’ll be ok. We’ll be ok.” I say.
“At least we’ve narrowed down the area of where we know the fair set up every year.” I look at the map of my phone and nod.
“I’ve narrowed it down. You mean.” I say jokingly. She flashes me one of her rare smiles. Her hair is black. The tips have been dyed dark green. Her wolf is the same. “I’ve been thinking about dyeing my hair pink.” I say. “Oh turn left here.” I point.
“That would be cute, but I like your streaks they make you stand out.” I would miss my streaks.
“Turn here there something I need to get.” She turns into the store parking lot. “BRB.” I call to her hoping out of the vehicle. When I return she’s drumming her fingers on the steering wheel impatiently. I jump in. “Let’s go.”
