Chapter 1:
Wolves in Glass Houses
I ran straight into the woods after school. Passing green pine. I heard the muffled sound of my footsteps turned to the crunching of dry leaves as I went. Pine turned to tall oaks, and maples. The green of the trees close to the school turned a variety of fall colors. The sunlight was beautiful. I could make out patches of sunlight though the branches making the orange, reds, and yellows seem brighter. The leaves on the ground were mostly a warm shade of brown. Every once in a while my keen eyes could make out the sight of a few leaves still clinging to their green color. I remember as a kid the trees were described as being asleep during autumn. I wondered if that meant these stubborning leaves were clinging to wakefulness. A fight they knew they’ed loose eventually. I came across a small leafy clearing. It would be green come spring time. In the clearing was a green house, or what was left of one. Some of the glass panels were cracked. A few in the back had missing pieces, or were gone entirely. Still it protected us from the elements pretty well. There was an old rug on the floor of leaves, along with an antique lounge chair towards the back. The antique store was just going to get rid of it. To the right was a set of folding chairs, and folding table we had brought from home. On the small table was a cooler full of meat. To the left was a pantry cupboard me, and Jordan had carried in. We had combined our saving to get it. In it was a pack of water bottles, and some chips and crackers. It was an old wooden thing, but it kept the snacks good. When the light hit the green house just right it made a rainbow of colors. It was beautiful. I sat in one of the fold up chairs taking a lamb leg out of the cooler. I was done eating by the time Venessa and Ross walked up. I was surprised they were the first ones here as they were the slowest in the group. They were laughing and joking. They each slid of their back packs off before taking the seats next to me.
“Hey Charlotte.” Vanessa greets. Her hair is died in a purple gradient. She’s wearing an anime t-shirt, and black jean shorts. She is a typical beauty. Two more people walk up. They’re not my pack members. I had heard them nearby earlier, but hadn’t thought much of it. No one knew of this spot. Few came this far into the woods at all. Too afraid of being killed by bears, or wolves.
“Well, well looks like we found the geeks little hideout.” I was on my feet in a second. Venessa bravely grabbed my wrist. I was hungry, and now it seems I was pissed off too. The man who spoke was Jackson his girl friend (Sydney) scrolled on her phone as he insulted us. Laughing at the right parts. She was just as bad as he was. They mostly left us alone. Too intimidating by our numbers, and rightfully so. Every once and a while…
“What cats got your tongue?” Jackson taunted stupidly. V let go of my wrist. Ross put on a slasher movie on his phone, and V started playing a movie game. Satisfied they were distracted I returned my gaze to my prey. I grinned and Jackson had the sense to take a step back, but not to run. I could hear a twig snap behind them. Jack spun around, and his girlfriend seemed oblivious to the world around her. That is until she heard the growling. She turned around to see three large wolves behind her. One with black fur. Raina. One with black and brown fur, which would be Jordan. And the third grey wolf would be Cypress. Jordan was a fellow Alpha, and my mate. Cypress and Raina were my betas. I felt the shift coming.
“You know I was going to go hunting, but since your here…”
