Chapter 10:

As the Last Light Falls

Children of Cinders

-Trigger Warning/Violence-

If there was a definition of violent, Black Widow will certainly be a candidate to that moniker. She springs towards battle as a blur of steel, gunshots, and light. Despite being named as Black Widow, her power over Light is a great contradiction. Not at all ambush like as the former Black Widows that held the title.

Each lunge was met with a throat. Each shot fires was a vital organ. And each Light refracted towards their eyes and blinded them.

Caterpillar stayed behind the rear, he wasn't aiming for any vital organ, he shoots an ionized bullet at the legs, crippling them when they get too close his siblings' backs.

Nymph wasn't doing good, he tried using the katana with one hand, but the weight was too much for him. He tries to slash their assailants, but he completely missed the mark, or gets parried, or gets his butt handed to him. Caterpillar picks up the slack by shooting their weapons off as Nymph finally used both hands.

"Thanks for the assist!" Nymph called out to Caterpillar.

"FOCUS!" Caterpillar replied as he shoots more highroaders.

But the battles seemed endless, and the rifle Caterpillar is using was about to die off. So when he couldn't fire another shot, he tossed it towards a rogue and picked up two revolvers and begins to shoot at the weapons and the feet of the assailants.

A familiar grunt makes Caterpillar lose focus, and he saw Nymph disarmed and in danger. But Widow comes in clutch and saves him from the highroaders.

"Stop holding back." She chides the both of them and resumes killing off the rogues.

Caterpillar goes in front of Nymph, who was still shaking from the experience. He didn't knew... In fact, both of them never anticipated that this was a dangerous situation.

Even Caterpillar's hands were shaking, his shots were getting less accurate because of the experience, he made a mistake and shot just inches from his brother's ear. But it was enough to trigger the awakening.

When the bullet grazed his side, Nymph's mind went blank, and a buzz sounded from his ears when he yelled out in surprise, a blast of sonic energy burst forth, disorienting the attackers in front of him.

Widow looked a bit surprised, but shot a piercing bullet made of light to knock both boys from their trance.

Caterpillar was the first to recover and rolls to cover Nymph by shooting blindly. He didn't care if he shot them dead, so long as he protects his brother.

"Nymph! Wake up please!!" Caterpillar said as he tossed the pistols away as soon as they ran out of charges.

Nymph's eyes snapped back to reality and clapped both his hands and sends a thunder-like sound across the field. He places a hand on his brother's shoulders, who was crying and grinned.

"Leave it to me little bro." He said and picked up a sword and a dagger and skirts across the field, each time he gets cornered, he slams both steels together, creating a dissonant barrier of noise to disarm and dissuade them from acting.

Nymph smiled wickedly as if he was waiting for this chance, and became a loud whirlwind of steel and noise. Blood splattered, screams cut off, and bodies eviscerated and littered the ground.

"Nymph, stand down." Widow said as they finally stopped the assault on the eastern front, but Nymph was still in a frenzy, and when he saw Caterpillar, he lunged for him, blades at the ready.

"Be a dear... STOP."

Something cracked like the sound of a whip, and by the time Caterpillar face was inches away from the long blade held by Nymph, but he stopped, as if being ordered by someone.

"Dear me, you almost lost your pretty eyes Caterpillar." Wanda struts amidst the bloodstained field, she looked like a ghost walking over the dead bodies. She then went close to his brother and whispered something, and he flopped face first to the dirt.

"What happened to him?" Caterpillar asked, Nymph was energetic sure, but he wasn't violent.

"A Black-Out." Widow walks up and pays respect to Wanda.

"Black-Out?" Caterpillar pondered.

"A Self-Defense mechanism of a Cinderchild. It amplifies the Providence Magic inside of us, but at the cost of our reason, our humanity." Widow explained. "Black-Outs are a crutch. But controlling Black-Outs is a difficult process."

"I heard Wolf, Dragonfly, and Moth can control theirs." Wanda butts in.

"Also, Nymph probably didn't mean to hurt you. In fact, take a look." Wanda pointed at the limp body, primarily the face, Caterpillar saw it, albeit faintly...

"Tear Marks?" Caterpillar concluded.

"He was desperately trying to regain his semblance. But his power, his awakening which stemmed from danger, was enough for him to go on a rampage. Don't worry, since he awakened, he will be given a Rite of Purification. That should help him control his Black-Out." Wanda assures Caterpillar.

"And with that, let's return to base camp. And to ordain our newest recruit. Welcome to the Ranks of Cinderchildren, Our very own 'Night Cicada'."

Caterpillar carried his brother's limp body back to Base Camp. Awakening and Black-Outs. Caterpillar had a lot to learn. After giving Night's sleeping figure to the medics, Caterpillar heads for the archives about the Awakening and more about Black-Outs.

"Yeesh, and I though Firefly was a bookworm." A cheerful voice snapped Caterpillar from his focus, he didn't noticed, but it was already the crack of dawn. When he looked to his left, he was met with a goofy smile, green eyes, and blond hair.

Caterpillar yelped and instinctively threw a book, hitting him square on the face.

"And you throw like Moth too!" Dragonfly rubbed his nose, as it was bleeding a little.

"I-I'm sorry." Caterpillar said meekly which made Dragonfly chuckle.

"Don't sweat it kid, plus your aim was on point. Now, if only you could actually shoot people's heads like that." Dragonfly said.

"Oh you... saw that?" Caterpillar looks down. If Dragonfly saw it, then Moth and Wolf saw it too.

"Moth's proud of you." Dragonfly said.

"HUH?"He said in a loud voice that made everyone in the archives say "SHH!" in unison.

"We made a bet you. He bets that you won't aim for any vital points, and lo and behold, you didn't. Wolf and I lost the bet so we're taking over Moth's missions for a week." Dragonfly complained.

"Where's Moth?" He asked.

"Off to a mission" Dragonfly said which made Caterpillar sad.

"Oh... He's gone."

"You really like him huh?" Dragonfly asked and Caterpillar just nods.

"Then how about I give you an early birthday gift?" Dragonfly offered, which made Caterpillar pensive.

"Okay... But what is it?" Caterpillar asked, but before anything else, Dragonfly grabbed him, and they traveled away from the Eastern Frontline somewhere else. Leaving a trail of lightning in his wake.

When the chaos dissipated, Wanda came in the archives and finds a note addressed to her.

I'm taking the kid for his birthday. I already got permission from pops. But if his brother asks, then tell him, he was repositioned to the Cyber City of Logos.

-Dragonfly.

P.S. Thanks for the new outfit sis!

Wanda laughed as she strides away from the Archives, in her mind, Nymph awakening his powers and thus became Night Cicada or just "Night", she speculates that if Caterpillar were to go to another location, then their awakening processes will accelerate. After all, she has high hopes for the next generation of Cinderchildren.
