PROLOGUE

CAFE32

An acronym for 'Centralized Arsenal of Fortification Excellence', is a worldwide organization specialized in countermeasures against supernatural phenomena popping up here and there throughout the world.

It was established in 1996 as an official governmental organization by efforts and unanimous agreement of all the countries around the globe to combat, secure and research everything there is about these mysterious entities.

The 32 in its name represents the number of approved main divisions within this highly structural organization. The divisions determine the lifestyles and policy of their operator which includes their approaches towards monsters, the combat rule, weaponry, emergency guidelines and many more.

The list of divisions includes : United States, United Kingdom, Germany, South Korea, Japan...

Watchers

A group of combat experts within CAFE32 whose task is to engage these supernatural phenomena directly in the frontline within certain rules and regulations. However, because there are 32 different main divisions located throughout the world, these rules and regulations can often be quite confusing.

For that, CAFE32 introduced the '2011 Common Regulation' as a way for the publics and civilians to easily recognize these Watchers. According to the CAFE2011ComReg, the standards that a Watcher must follow includes :

Clothing : A Watcher must always wear a light blue necktie and their color-coded authority armbands when out on duty.

Weapons : The weapon that a Watcher must use can only be either the one that had been approved under CAFE32 Weapon Regulations or the official weapon issued by their divisions.

On-site Policy : A Watcher must never hurt any civilian when...

Supernatural Phenomena

These are unexplainable occurrences or mysterious entities that appear spontaneously around the world. However, due to the moderns improvement in technologies and understanding of these beings, one devices such as CNTRL (Centralized Nexus for Transcendental Records and Knowledge) could utilizes its databases in order to recognize the classifications of these beings and even pinpoint their anticipated locations.

"Are you for real...", Ayato said after a huge pop-up ad appeared, blocking his entire screen.

Venting a sigh, he closed the jumbled tabs within his web browser before turning off his laptop and shutting it on top of his desk, filling the room in darkness.

He took a deep breath and lifted his head to look at the dark ceiling above him. He stares blankly at it for some time before turning his head to the left, now looking at a still black curtain blocking the sunlight from entering.

Ayato lifted himself from his swivel chair, pushing it backwards as it hit the wooden frame of his bed. He then walked towards the curtain, grabbing one end of its corner.

*swoosh*

With a slide, a rising sunlight pierced through the balcony glass door, illuminating the room, revealing the gentle orbs wandering around aimlessly.

Over the glass door of the balcony was a dimly lit city. Lights can be seen coming from the apartments windows and the street below. Hiding behind two buildings was a giant ferris wheel remaining motionless. A little further into the distance was a port filled with containers, cranes and commercial ships. As it's still early in the morning, not many people can be seen around and about.

"I better go now.", Ayato muttered before walking towards a white cabinet to his left.

He opened the upper big part of the cabinet door, revealing his limited amount of clothing choice hanging inside of it. Three monochrome t-shirts and a navy blue jacket along with a light blue tie.

(The first day... huh...), he thought to himself while grabbing the jacket and the tie out from the cabinet.

He twisted and knotted the tie into a standard four-in-hand around his black shirt's collar, adjusting it to his comfort before putting on his jacket, covering his shirt.

Noticing his smartphone was still on the bed, he grabbed it and turned it on.

[7:04 AM, 20th June 2024, Thursday]

After looking at the phone's lock screen, he swiped a pattern password before opening an app titled 'Calls'. He scrolled through the logs with the last one being a missed call from 'Little Sis'.

"She's gonna be mad for sure.", he released a sigh as he frowned.

He inserted his smartphone into the right pocket of his jacket before walking west of his apartment, heading towards the front door.

Ayato grabbed a light-blue white-stripes pair of sneakers from the shoe rack before putting it on. He then tapped the tip of his foot onto the wooden floor to adjust the sneakers.

Ayato turned his head to look back towards the room he was just in. He stared for a moment, the brightly neat room, before grabbing the metal knob of the front door, turning it open and took a step out.

The scenery on the other side was the same as the one he saw on his balcony. Except this time there is no sun as Ayato was facing towards the west of Yokohama, looking at the buildings and streets in front of him covered in shadows.

He then turned and inserted his key into the door knob. Twisting it as it made a 'clack' sound, locking the door to his house. He averted his gaze and looked towards the tag plate next to the door with '5E' written on it. It represents the fifth-floor which is the highest floor of this apartment and the letter 'E' indicates this unit being the furthest from the left staircase.

"Still... it's a bit unbelievable huh...", he muttered, looking at the orange sky above.

Ayato inserted his hand into his jacket to warm them up as he walked towards the staircase. He then recalled the content of the letter tucked inside his left pocket.

We are glad to inform you that you have PASSED the qualification test for the 'CAFE32 Watchers Intake Program of 2024 2nd Semester'. As such, you have been qualified as a new member of Japan's CAFE32 Division of 'Minato Mirai 21', Yokohama.

Your duty will start on 20th June 2024, 8:00AM.

Please make sure to equip yourself under the CAFE2011 Common Regulations.
