Chapter 2:

Backroads

Wildly Western

I woke to the sound of horse shoes hitting asphalt. That sweet smell of home had vanished and turned into sweat. I sat up from the fire pit where I had slept the night before. I snuck up to peer through the bushes at what the noise was. I saw two large horses, strong sturdy feet, long fluffy mains, breathtaking tails. I wanted to steal them. But I looked what they were pulling  it was a cart the size of a car! Maybe even bigger certainly taller! I couldn’t believe my eyes. I stumbled out of the bushes when a young blonde haired boy about my hight jumped out, I couldn’t make out his age you know how boys are always growing. He glared at me I knew that moment that these people were the ones coming to take me to my grandmas “Ooooooh, hello. You aren’t Mr. Kane are you? I kinda imagined him a bit taller with a bit less hair maybe.” I explained trying not to be rood. He rolled his ice blue eyes

“No, I’m Sander, his son. Dad couldn’t come because we own a farm so he sent me and my older brother to pick you up.” He replied as if he were talking to a wax statue that he was forced to talk to. I turned around and quickly picked up my pencil and diary. I sprinted up the worn muddy path to the road Panting and out of breath.

   “I’m Lillix.” I introduced.

“How nice of you, Get On The Wagon!” He shouted as he hopped into the back followed by me. First thing I did was stare back at home. The adventure had just begun and I wanted to go back already? I just stared longingly at the path behind us.

   “Um…Sander.”

“What?” Sander snapped sounding quite annoyed as he grabbed the bandanna tied around his neck to wipe his face.

“Why didn’t we take the highway?” I ask shyly afraid of being snapped at again.

“Horses are not built for asphalt, but they can walk on it from time to time, that’s why we take the backroads.” Sander answered at a more normal tone this time, I still recoiled

“What are backroads?” I ask just as shy as last time. Sander didn’t answer my question this time. I looked back at the dirt road. I knew how much my parents would be worried but considering how mad Sander is already I think I made the right decision…

Somehow I fell asleep without realizing it! The dark bitter smell of coffee filled the morning air it was a mouth watering sent. I so badly wanted to snatch it, in fact I might as well. I rolled over to see a boy with dark brown hair, eyes and boots, not to mention he was holding a cup of coffee. I kinda expected Sander to be waving it under my nose then snatch it away when I woke up. The boy looked older than Sander, this must be his older brother, this still means I have a chance at that coffee. I folded my legs under me and put on my best puppy dog eyes. His gaze immediately turned to me. I stared harder. He turned around to gather the horses reins. I spotted the cup immediately as he set it down. I slunk over, being very cautious of my surroundings when out of the back of my eye I spotted SANDER! My foot slipped on a tub that I was using to support my weight and knocked over the coffee and rolled right over the dark haired guy, at last second—before I hit the ground—the dark haired guy grabbed me around the knee, I was so thankful.

“Thanks, and sorry for spilling your coffee I really am.” I said shamefully after I was put back on my feet. I stared at the barn looking gas station with the rustic red paint the animal pumps you could mistake it for a real barn. I then started looking at anything but the one soaked boy and the really angry boy. I could feel tears  starting to dribble out onto my sunburnt face and my long brown hair. I tried not to but at least I made it to wagon before I really started. I somehow managed to find a sack of something soft to weep into. When I realized there was something hard in this? I opened my eye for the first time since I jumped in the wagon and realized it wasn’t a sack I was crying into it was the dark haired boy! How dare he abuse me like this! I glared at him, he didn’t seem to care he just carried on. I was positioned twords the back of the wagon I could barely see Sander’s body, he was buried under all this stuff! The only easy way to see him was his snakeskin cowboy hat that he had laid on his face to keep the lantern out, I’m assuming.

I looked up at his face, still glaring. He never even glanced. I just found it pointless so I called it a night…

I woke to the sound of hoof beats hitting asphalt, again. I glanced around, I was now lying on a bed like mattress made of sacks. I glanced up at Sander who had apparently taken over the reins after two whole nights. I sat up

“Who is that?” I ask as I pointed to the dark haired boy, passed out on a hay bale.

“My brother, Nathan.” He responded not even the siltiest glance back at me.

“Ima go back to bed.” I said before laying back down.

Wow people are kinda rood out here or at least don’t like getting dirty looks I thought.

I woke up to an extremely loud thump. Everything in the wagon went flying! Including me and Nathan! The whole cart tipped to one end. By that point Nathan and I were being squashed by all the stuff in the back of the wagon. A sack of what felt like corn landed right on my face! I tried to move it but the rest of my body was stuck so I screamed as loud as I could. Three seconds later Nathan scrambled over to remove the bag that was suffocating me. I took a huge breath before anyone did anything else.
