Chapter 3:

Riding

Wildly Western

The second thing that happened was Nathan stomped angrily over to the front of the wagon, with a mashed cowboy hat. I heard a lot of yelling and shouting about hats and how Sander shouldn’t drive the wagon. I walked slowly over there to the front of the wagon. When I entered the conversation they were talking about how they were supposed to get home with a broken wagon wheel when I hopped in

“We have two horses? We could use them.” I suggested.

“Two horses three people.” Sander complained “I ain’t riden with no girl.” He snapped.

“Fine then She can ride with me.” Explained Nathan “you know you got some extra room on your horse.” Nathan antagonized. That was when I realized they both had smashed hats? Did Nathan smash Sander’s hat? Meh seems fair.

I walked over to this big monster and threw the towel that I had found in the wagon over the saddle and my diary. Getting on the horse should be as easy as the wagon, Right? It wasn’t. Nathan got on first then he let me have a go. But Nathan made it look so easy. Sander laughed when he saw me trying. I could feel tears swelling up in my eyes, I couldn’t let him bully me around this time. I had to do this! Nathan reached his hand down to help me. He then lifted me up. That’s why it’s so easy for him! He’s super strong. I was lifted onto the back of the saddle which I had no idea what it was called. I looked down at the horse, her pretty black coat and mane, she was beautiful.

   “What’s her name?” I ask

“Chance, and he’s a him.” Nathan responded. I stared around at the dusty landscape as Chance trotted down the narrow path. Rain came a few hours later. It was a good thing I threw a towel on Chance before we left the wagon. Sander had put the hood of the wagon on his back of his saddle, I don’t think he wanted to give up that big cloth otherwise he was trying to make his seat more comfortable.

We waited for the rain to pass then I pulled out my towel and dried off.

“Can I use the towel, I need it,” Sander complained “I’m soaking wet!”

“Considering how rude you have been to me on the way here, No!” I said handing Nathan the towel. I noticed a wide grin on his face his brown eyes glittered in the afternoon light. Nathan dried off quickly and handed the towel back to me. The saddle was making my legs cramp.

“My legs hurt, can we get off and walk a while?” I asked.

“No, we’re almost there. should take about a day, that is if your Sander!” Nathan said jabbing his spurs into the horse then releasing as the horse immediately picked up speed. I was going as fast as I ever had in my entire life. I could see the desert landscape around me blurring it felt like I was flying, I never wanted it to stop. But it did when Nathan leaned back into an upright position and the horse slowed back to a walk.

“Where did Sander go?” I asked

“Oh Jack only lopes.” Nathan responded.

“What dose lope mean?” I asked “And who is Jack?”

“The old paint horse, He’s Jack.” Nathan continued “And a lope is a slower version of what we just did.”

“Ooooooooohhhh” I said looking back to see if I could see Sander. “Why did we stop?”

“Horses need breaks just like you.” Nathan replied. “It’s right up here on the right.” Nathan explained while pointing to a small cottage.

   “So that’s where I’m staying?” I asked.

“No that’s your grandma, girl.” Nathan said sarcastically. “Ours is the one at the end of the road.” Nathan looked out to my Aunts. He got it wrong so what.

“So when is the end of the road?” I asked as I saw fields and fields of fresh lush crops of all kinds. There were two barns one on each side of the road a few miles away. There were paths, paths between each crop field, paths leading to the barns, paths leading out to the trees that  surrounded the whole property. I could see why he wanted me here there was so much work to do for this farm. I peered around Nathan to see a big white three story house. There were flower pots in every window a small stone path that  led up to the front door. The path was lined with red roses on each side, potted cactuses on ether side of the double doors. And three willow trees on both sides of the house. In fact there was a huge willow tree that stood far back near the tree line that I just knew I’d be spending time under. Back behind the house there was green grass lots and lots of grass. I spotted two thick figures. They must have been Mr. Kane and his wife. Nathan stoped Chance and told me it was time to get off because we had made it. I stubbornly clenched the saddle seat

   “No.” I demanded

“No? You have to get off first. I’ll kick you if I go first.” Nathan explained

“Ok.” I responded shyly. I slid off on one side but my foot got stuck in the thing you put your foot in and the horse took a step forward and drug me with it, I screamed when Chance picked up a trot! My head something very hard when I blacked out…
