Chapter 5:
Wildly Western
This morning I didn’t wake up because I was already awake! I was so annoyed that those coyotes sat there all night like I had a drumstick hanging out my window. I also heard loud miuzic all night long, country music. I sat on my bed to almost the whole night waiting for them to go away or stop barking. I gave up after twelve and just flopped down and didn’t move. I snuck up stairs because the sun still hadn’t come up then. I poked around the living room and took a seat on the couch. I then found rest.
I heard a chicken crowing right in my ear, because there was a chicken crowing in my ear! I screamed when I saw this horrifying thing. Sander’s light cheerful laugh filled the air around me. I couldn’t stand him, such a brat! I sat up after Mrs. Kane came and started resetting the covers quickly.
“What have I done wrong?” I ask sitting in her way.
“Well whenever Nathan wakes to see someone scrunched his whole couch up he gets really mad.” She then whispered “And that’s not pretty.” Her voice raised to normal again “you can set the rest when you come down for chores. I looked out the window, it was barely dawn! And I don’t get any breakfast! What kind of cruel family is this, oh well it’s better than spending my day in an old junkyard. As I was about to get up I heard the door creak open. Oh no, was was that Nathan I tried to peer around the door. It was! His eyes widened
“GET OFF MY COUCH!!!!!” He shouted so loud I thought I was going to go deff. It felt like every time someone got mad I would cry, here I am again weeping on his couch. The room suddenly went quiet. I just knew he was standing there staring at me, not willing to help. How could I sit here, how dare my parents send me here, why? So I can live in a big house with a bunch of mean temperamental boys who all own their own couches, how dare they. I stared at the quilted blanket that lay across it then I slowly looked up to see Nathan staring down at me with dark daring eyes. My eyes started to water. It was like magic he stopped being mad I stopped being sad. Still staring I slowly sat up wiping the tears out of my eyes.
“Breakfast time!!!” Shouted a voice from the kitchen that sounded like Ms. Kane. Both our gazes were drawn by that. I could smell sweet blueberries and strawberries running up my nose, I guess Nathan could smell it too because We both rushed down the stairs to see what it was. We met Sander on the way down. Pushing and shoving too whatever it was we were desperate to know. At the bottom of the stairs Nathan made it to the front then me then Sander. Sander pushed me over I fell into Nathan as Sander took a seat at the table. I was squirming to get off of Nathan. I quickly snatched stair rail to pull myself up. I then took a seat. Nathan slowly walked over to the table with a hand on his head.
“Are you ok?” I ask.
“Fine.” Nathan responded. I looked at the large selection of fruit pies that were placed at the other end of the table, where Sander sat. I stared longingly at all the fruit pies that were not in my belly. Nathan and Sander didn’t look too amused. I gave them a weird look. Ms. Kane put a piece of paper on the table that was about arm length. Now I could see why the boys were not too excited about pie. The list was a list of chores.
The chores were listed easiest to hardest. Each one required different people that were assigned different jobs.
Nathan read the list Then Sander then me. The chores had things listed such as “Clean the chicken coop, Nathan, Lilac. Finish Sam’s dog house, Sander, Lilac. The thing was my name was at the end of each and every core on the list! Did I have to help with them all?
“Why is my name at the end of all the chores?” I ask
“Because you have to supervise them of corse.” Said Ms. Kane with great joy. “Every time one of them completes a chore you approve it then that person can come inside and have a bite of pie and a glass of water. They switch in and out until all the chores are finished!” She then waved Sander and I out the door to feed and water the pigs. I instantly felt the heat burning my skin it was so hot I felt as if I were going to die of heat stroke! We walked all the way up the hill to the pig pen. He climbed the fence and got to work. I just sat there, bored, hot, dying. I waited for him to finish, which took a while because the hose had not even enough pressure to fill a water balloon. I sent Sander in and a few seconds later Nathan came out holding a drill and some nails. We repaired the bad spot on the roof of the barn. Nathan actually let me help, I held the nail box while he got to hang on the ceiling and drill some nails in. Maybe it wasn’t the coolest job but it was less boring than just standing there watching the water bucket fill.
We had four things left on the list, or so I was told by Sander. I sat watching Sander repair the dog house. I was blazing hot by then. It was mid day the sun was high in the sky and making me suffer. Sander ran inside after he was done. Nathan came out a few seconds later with nothing? I didn’t have the breath to ask him what we were doing. But I wish I had. We walked into the horse barn that was to the left side of the road. Nathan grabbed a saddle, bridle, chaps, girth and saddle pad. He handed all this stuff to me? Why me? Then he got a whole other set for himself. We walked over to the stalls labeled Chance and Star. We tacked our horses and saddled up. I just followed Nathan the whole way. We rode down a small dirt road surrounded by lush grass I felt like I wanted to just take a bite out of it. We rode down to a small cool creek, it felt wonderful walking under the dark brush. I remembered what the sun felt like when we exited the trees. I looked around when things started to get blurry
“Nathan? NATHAN!” I screamed as the world went black…
I woke with a pain in my side. I could feel stinging pain on my side. How had this happened? I started to cry when I felt the stinging of the wounds. My pink T-shirt was no longer pink it was stained red. The tears under my eyes stung too. I still couldn’t see a thing except a dark brown blur when I lifted my eyes up. My eyes felt heavy so I let them shut…
I woke in my bed, I had lots of bandages. I hurt all over. The worst spot was right on my right side of my body. My foot also hurt. I tried to move but moving hurt. Why did I pass out? How did I fall off the horse? How did I get back? What happened to my shirt? Do I not need one because my bandages cover me? Am I a mummy now? So manny questions filled my mind. I couldn’t stop trying to find out how this happened.
Ms. Kane entered the room and breaking through my thoughts.
“Morning Lilac.” Said Ms. Kane in a cheerful tone as she set a tea cup by my bedside. She spooned the tea into my mouth, it was nasty I couldn’t stand the taste or smell. Then the got up and left. I hated the tea but the company was nice. I had so many questions and no answers! Why didn’t I ask her what happened, she probably didn’t know anyway.
