Chapter 38:
Escape:Witch [Remake]
February 1st, 2004 9:37 AM
A young Fubuki winced in pain as she laid in bed inside her underground hideaway.
"I can feel her kicking around, it must be time. Please be alright... Please be alright- HGNH! GAAH!"
As the time became 9:38, Fubuki gave birth. Due to being alone, Fubuki had to force herself to keep an eye open and make sure her baby came out alright. The baby came out quickly, but was motionless as she laid on the bed. Fubuki began to go pale until the baby began to cry.
"Y- YOU'RE ALIVE! Ah, don't worry, Okaa-san's here," Fubuki tearfully smiled as she mustered her strength to grab some nearby scissors and cut the umbilical cord.
She then put them back before swaddling the newborn baby girl in a blanket. As the baby opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was her mother's face.
"So this is what he meant about wanting something to protect. Yuji, thank you for what you left behind. She has your eyes," Fubuki thought as newfound strength and determination surged into her eyes.
The baby stopped crying and began to smile as she gazed up at her mother's face.
"Yuni. Your name is Yuni," Fubuki smiled.
The baby responded with happy babbles as Fubuki cradled her in her arms and began singing a lullaby.
A few moments later, Yuni began crying again. Fubuki correctly guessed Yuni was hungry and began breastfeeding her.
"You're a little on the small side so drink up. I want you to grow up to live a nice long life."
Yuni didn't quite seem to understand her words, but nonetheless, she smiled and continued drinking. She then peacefully fell asleep as Fubuki held her up to her face.
"Her heartbeat and breathing seem normal, and she appears to be healthy. Though to be safe, I'll twin-link with Hitomi and have her do the assessments."
...
The next day, Fubuki smiled as she awoke to the sound of Yuni's crying. "Good morning, my little miracle. Are you hungry?"
Yuni immediately began smiling as she noticed her mother and happily babbled as she was taken out of her crib to be breastfed.
"Don't worry, Okaa-san will protect you and fight to make this world one where you can safely grow old in."
...
Three years later, Fubuki returned to the hideout after a morning of scouting. As she descended to the secret basement and approached a steel door, the voice of a young girl spoke through the intercom.
"What happened on February 29th 2000?"
"Riho Amanuma and Nobuto Shiragiku were murdered by Niles Thorndyke."
"What captured the crime?"
"A Canon Powershot A5."
"What time was I born?"
"9:38 A.M. on February 1st, 2004," Fubuki replied with a smile.
The door unlocked and Fubuki entered to be greeted by a now 3-year old Yuni.
"Okaa-san!" Yuni cried as she leapt into her mother's arms.
"I'm glad to see you too Yuni," Fubuki smiled as she stroked her daughter's magenta hair.
She then locked the door and got to work on her computer.
"So who'd you bust today?" Yuni asked.
"I managed to catch a disturbing photo while out in the woods. I'm honestly lucky I wasn't spotted," Fubuki stated as an image of Ruchi Ookuma holding a jagged knife with a demented smile on her face appeared on the computer screen.
"Isn't that the one you think murdered her husband?"
"Yes, though she is incredibly dangerous. If I try to expose her, there will be no going back."
"You can do it! You're fearless!"
Fubuki closed her eyes and sighed before turning to face Yuni. "I'm not concerned about myself, but you are a different story."
"I've been keeping guard on the basement ever since I could talk though."
"And I'm glad you are smart enough to do that at your age, but as your mother, I still worry about you. I think it might be time to have you move in with your aunt and cousins."
"But I wanna be with YOU Okaa-san!" Yuni pouted.
"It's too dangerous, and I don't want you to be forced to spend your life underground because of me. Hitomi lives in the light and will make sure you can have a nice normal life. Though I'll promise you this. I'll try to visit you at least once a year on your birthday."
"ONCE A YEAR!?"
"I don't want Hitomi, her family, and especially you to be targeted by Illumous because of me. Though I may not see you everyday, I'll be sure to upload videos online more frequently than I did before."
"Why now?"
"Because now that you're old enough, I feel you're strong enough to live without me with your aunt. I laid low so I could raise you, but now it's time to start bringing down the corrupt again so that the world will be a better place for you to grow up in."
Yuni gazed up at her mother's warm smile and her strong and unwavering eyes. "You're the coolest mother ever!"she tearfully smiled as she hugged Fubuki.
"I hope you grow up to be a wonderful woman," Fubuki smiled.
...
After packing up what little Yuni had, the two set off. Yuni squinted and shielded her eyes as she set foot outside, but Fubuki helped her by giving her her sunglasses.
"Now, remember, we're outside so make sure you always refer to me as Fubuki. Even when at Hitomi's place, always refer to me as "Fubuki"."
"Yes O-"
"No, it's Fubuki."
"...Yes... F- Fubuki..."
Fubuki nodded as she held Yuni's hand and began walking with her.
"Yuni, I know you look up to me, but it's dangerous for you to live with me. That's why I'm taking you somewhere safe."
"But why? O-"
"Always remember to refer to me as Fubuki. If Illumous finds out about you... I couldn't bare to even imagine the hell that would befall us."
"Yes O- Fubuki..."
Fubuki smiled warmly and kneeled down to face Yuni. "Don't worry, I'll visit you once a year on your birthday. I want to see your growth, you're my miracle after all."
"You're so strong, that's why I love you O- Er, Fubuki," Yuni smiled as she hugged Fubuki.
"And that's why I love you too."
The two continued walking, but after a few minutes, Yuni began to get tired. "O- Fubuki, I'm tired."
A somber look overcame Fubuki's face as she once again knelt down to face Yuni. "I'm sorry Yuni. Your physical strength likely took a hit because of me."
"What do you mean?"
"I'll explain it when you're- No, I'll tell you in a video. Even though a girl your age shouldn't be watching my videos, I take it you will anyway. Just only do it when you're at home and not in public."
"Yes, Fubuki."
Fubuki smiled and picked Yuni up. "It was honestly a miracle I was even able to become pregnant with you in the first place after what was done to me. That's why I want you to have a future. I couldn't really take you out of the bunker due to my fears, but now that I encountered Ookuma, I have no choice. I can't let you get caught in the crosshairs like Serika was. I don't want to lose another child," she thought.
As the two neared their destination, Fubuki showed Yuni a nearby house surrounded by a large wooden fence. "This is actually connected to your aunt's house via a secret passageway. On your birthday, this will be where we meet each year. I'll tell Hitomi as well, but always make sure you get her permission first before running out on your own, understand?"
Yuni nodded her head as Fubuki smiled and continued. All the while, Fubuki constantly checked her surroundings for any potential stalkers. So far there was nothing, but Fubuki never let her guard down, even when she arrived at her sister's house.
Yuni stared in bewilderment as Hitomi answered the door. "Wow, she really does look just like you, but her eyes don't look as cool."
"Yuni, do be a little nicer to your aunt, you're going to be in her care from now on," Fubuki sighed.
"Futami, must you really continue this dangerous path? Why not retire and live in peace?" Hitomi sighed.
"I can't do that, nor would Illumous allow me to just live my life after what I know. I saw Ookuma today, and I'm going to take her down."
After a heartfelt goodbye, Fubuki left Yuni with Hitomi. When she returned to her base, she was met with a horrific sight; everything was alit with flames. Immediately, she used her twin link ability and quickly began crying. "...Thank goodness, she's Ok. I'm so glad. If I had been a moment too late in this... No, don't think about that nightmare. Ookuma has declared war, and it's time to fire back," Fubuki thought as she clutched a flash drive inside her pocket.
...
A 4-year old Yuni giddily approached Fubuki as she met her at their agreed upon location. "Why were you at the studio when Shiruka was murdered?"
"I was on a class field trip."
"What keyed you in on who the culprit of that incident was?"
"He was carrying a real knife, yet claimed it was a prop."
"What was the time and date your miracle occurred?"
"February 1st at 9:38 AM."
Yuni immediately jumped into Fubuki's arms as Fubuki pulled down her mask and shades. "I've missed you so much!"
"Me too. How has your health been?"
"The doctor said I had stamina deficiency, but that was about it. But what happened to you!?"
Fubuki somberly smiled as she sat down and explained how she got the stitched up wound running down her entire face. Yuni clenched her fist in anger as she heard just how cruel I.L.U. could be.
"Fubuki... When I'm older, can I be with you again?"
Fubuki shook her head. "Asking me that now will just get you a "no". You need to live a normal life first. Speaking of which, fill me in on what you've been up to."
The two happily chatted for hours until the sun began to rise. They then began to leave, but not before Yuni gave Fubuki one last hug. "Fubuki... When we're alone like this... Can I call you-""
"Yes, you may."
"Thank you, Okaa-san."
...
Fubuki smiled as she sat down next to a now 15-year old Yuni. "You've grown so much, and now you'll be starting high school soon."
"Yeah, I'm gonna show that bitch Serika that high school isn't hard, she's just dumb."
"You still don't get along with her?"
"You kidding me? She's always in a bad mood and scowling at me. One time, she was acting all happy, but then I came back from the bathroom and she began glaring at me. "
"But you two haven't gotten in any fistfights right?"
"None at all, though I hear Serika gets in fights at school. That girl's a delinquent, and an odd one at that. I think she got more magenta highlights to try and make herself smarter."
"What makes you say that?"
"Ugh, it grinds my gears. So..."
Fubuki smiled as Yuni told her all. "I haven't been in your life much, but here we are talking like we see each other every day. You're also getting along somewhat well with Serika. I still can't believe she was actually swapped at birth, but Reika confirmed it as well. Maybe one day we can all live peacefully as a family," she thought.
...
"And that was the last conversation I had with Fubuki," Yuni stated.
Serika struggled to no avail to stop the tears from pouring out of her eyes. "S- She really said all that about me?"
"At the time, I never understood why she asked about you so much, but now I know. She was seeking an update on how you were doing too."
"Heh, hearing about how loving she was makes up for all the shit you said about me."
"Guess you two really are tsundere siblings. Now let's hit the sights," Madoka smiled as they all headed out.
