Chapter 80:
The Lifeless Supermoon: A Fateful Encounter
She diverted her attention to the bridge that was coming into view from among the misty atmosphere. It was a concrete bridge, with concrete pillars and a pitch road which was on top of the railway like that went below that. "Wow. I have rarely seen this bridge."
"I know right? Its nice having a change once in a while.", he paddled his bike even harder. He twisted his gear handle all the way to 1. "Hold on tight!"
She tightened her girp, almost making it hard for Kanako to breathe. He put his whole energy into pushing the paddle. His joy increased, seeing the bridge empty. "This is going to be fun!"
Ayane was scared a little. Kanako was going dangerously fast considering the second passenger handicap. But she didn't dislike it. It created a tingling sensation in her heart. Somewhere deep inside she like dangerous stuffs, a bit, she guessed.
She laughed, being tickled in the heart. "This is fun!"
"I know! A little danger is fun!", Kanako agreed.
The smell of the earth intensified as they crossed the bridge towards the grassy land on the border of their island. The earth mystified around them, making it harder to see their surroundings. It felt like evening, even though it was probably still around afternoon.
The rain didn't stop. It poured even harder than before. Now it felt like sharp needles piercing the skin. It was cold. Ayane shivered.
"Aren't you cold?", she asked in wonder to him.
"What do you think I am? Obviously I do!", he shook his head, trying to get the water out of his eyes.
In curiosity, she touched his nape with her ice cold hands. It was still warm, with no hint of cold. Kanako shivered at the extreme differences of heat between their bodies. "Hey!", he exclaimed.
"Sorry sorry.", she laughed as she move the wet hair and tucked it behind her ear. "How far is you house?"
"Not that far."
"You still haven't told me about your surprise..."
"You will not be disappointed. I promise.", he assured. "Just wait a little." His heart raced harder the closer he got to his house. Questions clouded his mind. What would his mom think? Will she be mad? But then he pondered over another problem.
"Won't you mom be worried, Ayane-chan?", he asked.
"I will call her afterwards. Thanks for worrying."
She felt Kanako's heart race the closer they go to his house, as her hands were wrapped around his waist. She giggled a bit, seeing that he was nervous. She found it a little cute. It was as if he was a little location indicator. Judging by his heartbeat, she knew they were close to his home.
