Chapter 2:
Support in Another World
"You are dead."
I fell to the ground dropping the 2 knives I held in my left hand. Clank. They hit the ground. As I laid on the ground the woman in front of me also fell to the floor. I was weak, my brain felt as if it had exploded. I remembered my whole life hear in this world, every moment, every second. My brain was looking for something, something that was similar to this feeling. I desperately clung to my memories in hopes to find something, something that could save me. But it was no use, I had never died before. But then in my mind something happened, I remembered everything and nothing, I saw a life that was mine but not this one. It was a life in another world. The one I began to forget about when I entered this world. I saw the whole thing but it went by so fast I couldn't pick up on any of it. But still nothing, nothing that could save me.
I looked to the sky. I was ready to die, not willingly but there was nothing I could do. But the sky looked back at me. And like that I could stand. I looked around. Mere seconds ago I had felt like I was alone in this alley but really, I had been surrounded by the men. Most of them were around me weapons in hand. But the woman and the man with the injured leg were in the back tending to their wounds.
I looked at the large men in front of me. Some were bleeding. Though, they didn't look angry nor hateful. They were scared. But not in a cowardly way. This wasn't the fear that makes you run away, hide, and wish for your mother. This was the fear that drives you, makes you bear a weapon and stand tall.
But one man stood out. He was tall and his skin was dark. But what stood out the most was the fact that he was calm. When faced with me, someone who could be considered strong, he remained collected.
"Whatever they're paying you isn't worth it. If you back down now these children don't have to die. They can live, grow, develop, become something. Just like you, just like us", the man stood tall when he spoke and he had a very deep, but yet comforting tone of voice.
"It's no use speaking to them", one of the other men muttered
I looked back to the first man and made eye contact. He did not avert his gaze.
"I know not who you refer to as they, but I can assure you I have not received any form of payment from anyone. This act is of my own choice, my own will. I will save these children and they will live, grow, and develop on their own".
Now you may be wondering why I speak aloud like that. Well I don't anymore for the record, but that's how the 'fancy' people I grew up with spoke.
"I can tell your a Man of nobility, so I assume your educated? I ask that you please reason with us and look at all the facts first", the man said.
"Speak your mind than", I had said to the man holding eye contact.
"One could be lead to believe, that.. based our encounter.. you may or may not know of the current situation, sir." He spoke trying not to irritate me.
I realized that I was slightly uneducated on the current events. But, I could not let him know that.
"I believe I do know what's going on here, but if you would like to reiterate just in case, I would not mind.", I say back.
The man sort of smirked. "Well you see these children, just like you, have gifts."
"And you want to sell them?", I was growing impatient.
"We want to protect them sir." The man said back rather quickly.
"From what? The gifted are well...They don't need protected from anything, for they are strong", I mutter back.
"Well they need protected from those who want to take advantage of them. Humans born with gifts and without money tend not to be the most wise and end up getting take in custody of bad people sometimes."
"If what your telling me is true, than you are saving these kids from getting taken advantage of?", I said back still skeptical.
"It's kinda a bit more complicated but yes" He says.
"So I was in the wron-" "AGGGGHHHHHH" A man behind me screams.
"WE'RE MADE" another yells.
"Move" "Now" "SHIT". All these words are yelled by the men. I turn around to see the cities armed forces approaching down the long alley. One of the men whom was surrounding me had fallen to the ground, an arrow in the back of his head. He laid in a pool of blood.
"Bring life to a weak vessel, healing", I hold my hand to the body and use my gift.
It doesn't work. This man was dead.
"Hey man", the calm man had said. "If you stay here those guys will kill you just for interacting with us, come with us we'll explain everything just move now."
He was caring. So caring it made me care.
"I can help you so long as you put me in the cart with your wounded".
"It's suspicious but fuck it", the man says ushering me towards the cart.
"MOVE" the man yells loudly. The cart than began to move at a very quick pace.
I looked around, the cart was filled. There were children and these so called protectors all in here. I wondered where the rest of the men were but I felt they may have been laying on the ground bleeding.
"Yo healer, cm're", said the woman from earlier. I hated that name.
She had spoken to the calm man when he got in the cart.
"Imma need you to remake my energy like now". Based on the way she spoke it was clear she was uneducated.
"Energy", I said. She looked at me confused.
"ain't there more to that incantation shit", she spoke.
"not at my level." I responded.
"We're heading for the gate", said the calm man.
"Okay", the woman said standing up.
She held her hands out and touched each side of the cart. She then uttered something in a different language and everything around us disappeared. The cart, the kids, the men, everything. I was in the middle of a road floating and moving. Nobody looked at me nobody acknowledged me, nothing. I just kept moving in a bustling city.
Then I watched as I floated through the gate of the city. How had I been moving so fast? I had no clue but I had made amazing ground extraordinarily fast. And then I saw the city, it was gone. Out of site. And suddenly the cart reappeared along with the people in it. And the woman was collapsed on the ground in front of me. Blood was coming out of her eyes, ears, nose, mouth, finger tips. Anywhere the blood could flow out of. The children screamed and the men looked sick.
Even though in this situation it's obvious I was supposed to save her, I would have no matter what. Everything in me told me I needed to.
