Chapter 210:
En Passant Grandmaster
"Huh!? You're saying your family practices witchcraft!?" Iori gasped.
"Yes, at least on my father's side. The Broadstone family has long since engaged in witchcraft. Though it is worth noting it can't be used long-distance. I believe 30 meters is about the furthest a target can be away from the caster."
"So, what spells do they use?"
"Well... Mostly really basic stuff. Though teleporting things like spikes, poison, and even fresh chicken bones into their targets is the most common thing. Though basic levitation is also a given."
...
Iori scowled in bed as she recalled that conversation with Carol. "Guess seeing really is believing. That girl was sending those chicken bones flying around like missiles, and I don't think they were robotic in any way shape or form. Of course now that she's dead, we might get more witches coming after us."
As the sun peeked through the cracks in the blinds, Iori let out a sigh and got up. She hadn't slept as much as she'd wanted to, but it couldn't be helped. There was a lot on her mind to keep her up.
...
Two young women, both appearing to be foreign, stared at manga shop opening up for the day.
"Why are you staring at that place?" one of the women glared.
"Cuz this is the shit Zin's into, duh," the other smirked as she strolled inside.
The other woman reluctantly followed and cringed in disgust at the novel her companion had picked up. "T- That girl's just flat out naked! And they're advertising this out in the open!?"
"Yeah, let's see... It's called a doujinshi. Damn, this guy really knows how to draw some tits. Oh, I think I'm-"
"ENOUGH! I know this is required, but even Mother Salem has her limits!" the other woman fumed as she snatched the doujin away.
"Empathy. Look, I know the Misericordia party the fam supports always preaches about "compassion", but I say a good ole pinch of empathy goes a long ways in getting you what you want. And empathy is my whole gig."
...
As the 4th round of the qualification tournament began, Carol, Iori, and Mimoko ended up making short work of their opponents, resulting in them getting more free-time before the next round.
As the three decided to roam around the Ryokoma mall, they were approached by a young woman with shoulder-length multicolored hair.
"No way! It Iori-chan n' Cece! Oh, and their friend, Mimo!"
Mimoko froze in confusion as Iori and Carol began grinning. "You a fan!?" the two asked.
"I- I'm 69Scatslut6966."
"YO! I remember you. You're constantly super chatting big bucks. So wanna do a collab?" Iori grinned.
"You know it!"
Carol however, suddenly became uneasy as she noticed a glint in the girl's eye. "IORI-"
"ACK!?"
Iori suddenly began clutching her chest and fell to the ground in pain.
"What's going on!?" Mimoko frantically asked as she kneeled down to help Iori.
"Ah, and I was hopping I'd be able to empathize with you too, Zin," 69Scatlut6966," chuckled as she ripped some latex off her face.
"So it was you, Emmie."
"Emmie?"
Carol quickly explained that Emmie was another one of her cousins from the Broadstone family, and possessed a truly malicious ability; the ability to kill those that she could empathize with.
"That's evil," Mimoko shuddered as she attempted to keep Iori alive.
"It's downright sadistic, yeah, but it has so many stipulations. First I gotta empathize with my target, second, I gotta be in range, and third, they gotta resonate with me. Ah, if only Zin didn't recognize me, we could have hit it off. I mean, I am really 69Scatslut6966, so I'm already subbed to the top tier of both hers and Iori's channels."
"So you go that far just to trick people?"
"Nah, like Zin said, my ability's killing those I empathize with. That means I'm really into the shit they're into."
"Then why are you hurting them!?"
"Cuz Granny Salem says so, and well I gotta listen to the good ole matriarch if I don't wanna end up dead in a ditch myself. Besides, I'm more of a yandere anyway so I got no probs with killing folks I like."
Carol glared before unleashing a rapid kick at Emmie, causing Emmie to stumble back in shock. "Oi, where'd ya learn shit like that!? Kristalo!"
As Carol prepared to land another kick, an effeminate young man suddenly appeared and blocked it. The young man was scrawny and completely hairless, wearing nothing but a black speedo and some goth makeup and lipstick.
Carol scowled and quickly retreated to Mimoko and Iori as a woman with shaggy teal hair suddenly emerged from the shadows and joined the man and Emmie.
"Not good, we gotta knock out Emmie before Iori dies," Carol trembled.
"What do you mean?" Mimoko asked.
"Her spell causes her target's heart to be constricted and takes about 5 minutes to kill it's target, but it can be interrupted by knocking out it's caster, Emmie, or Emmie herself could choose to halt the spell."
"Ugh, I was hoping the final condition for my power wouldn't be leaked. Welp, with Kristalo and Simone here, you ain't getting any hits in on me," Emmie smirked.
"Oh, who needs to land a hit?" a voice snickered.
Everyone turned to notice Skarberghast strolling up to them with a DESPER in hand. Simone's eyes widened a bit as she recognized Skaberghast as a professor from her college. She quickly whispered what he was like to Emmie, allowing Emmie to begin her empathy spell. Yet despite empathizing with Skaberghast's lazy outlook, and him seemingly resonating with her, the spell failed, or rather was stopped as a turquoise glow briefly emitted from Skaberghast's chest.
"H- Huh!? W- Why'd it fail!?"
"Simple, I got a better life insurance plan than Ishikiridokoro over there. In fact, I think you're doing us a solid in taking her out. Except..."
Skaberghast turned towards Iori, Mimoko, and Carol and smirked. Despite being on the verge of death, and in pain, Iori had managed to pull a DESPER key out of her breasts.
"Science has advanced to where it can nullify paltry magic like yours. So, want fate to go into your own hand, or not?" Skaberghast snickered as he began walking towards Iori.
Emmie bit her lip before suddenly pulling out a vile of oil and smearing it all over Kristalo. Simone also did the same and the two began rubbing the oil down Kristalo's body, all while chanting, "Ura, ura. Woo, woo." It was honestly more like an awkward cheer performance than an incantation, though an incantation was exactly what it was.
As the two gazed at Kristalo's shiny head, Emmie's eyes widened before scowling and charging towards Skaberghast. "I'll play instead."
"Hoh? I am the more experienced player-"
"You weren't going to give me a choice anyway."
Skaberghast smirked and activated his DESPER. "Right you are. Full marks unlike your sister that blows every test."
Simone glared at the remark, but her expression quickly changed to that of bewilderment as the scenery changed to that of a robot graveyard. To hers and Emmie's horror, Iori suddenly shot up with a murderous glare in her eyes.
"Your ass is fucking DEAD for that!"
Emmie squealed in terror, as she suddenly found herself walking towards a chessboard atop a pile of destroyed robots. Once she and Iori sat down, they were asked to give conditions for the wager. Iori's was naturally that she be completely healed up from Emmie's curse and that Emmie end up nude and hairless before having all her skin melt off.
Emmie was taken aback by Iori's bloodlust, but quickly regained her composure. "In that case, you lose, instead of dying, you lose all your free will and become my wife and slave."
"Hoh? Well you're a kinky bitch aren't ya. And I will admit, you did tug at my heartstrings a bit. Hey, can I swap out the skin melting for just her heat exploding?"
Skaberghast gazed down at the DESPER before looking back up and responding with an affirming smirk.
"Great, now let the disrespect begin!"
A malicious smirk appeared on Emmie's face causing Carol to grow uneasy. Mimoko took notice and asked what was up, yet did not expect the answer she received.
"That ritual she performed with her brother and sister allows her to see into the future."
"Wait what!?"
"Even though men in the Broadstone family have no magical aptitude, they can serve as conduits in certain rituals."
"So then the men in your family-"
"Uh, only these two shave their brother bald and oil him up like a model. They claim it's to increase the conductivity, but the two are really just massive bro-cons."
"Um, excuse me!? I can hear that!" Simone fumed.
"Still, you don't think she's foreseen every move, do you?"
Carol went silent and watched as the game began. It started off simple enough with Emmie moving her pawn to e5 and Iori moving her pawn to e5. But after Emmie moved her knight to f3, Iori began to smirk and slammed her king down on e7. While this was normal for Iori, what really unnerved Carol and Mimoko was Emmie's maliciously confident grin as she moved her pawn to b3.
"Looks like Zin spilled the beans about the ritual. Well, it's too late to warn your friend, and not like it'll change a thing. On the 14th move, Iori-chan will resign," Emmie thought as Iori shrugged and moved her knight to c6.
