Chapter 2:

Surviving the walk to the tailor

Sugar Rush before the Sweet Nightmares

Samantha and I head out of my house. I do take a second to look back at it. I got it cheap. Something about it being haunted but nothing has happened for me so it's good.

It's not a big house. Just a one story, 2 bedroom and a bath little thing. The bushes have gotten gnarly and the tiny front yard has knee high grass from my lack of caring for the place. I have enough coin now that I'm not eating out I could hire the work done.

Nah. It will all die here soon. The over grown yard does give it a spooky look with the iron fence and door. Maybe in the spring it can get a trim.

The house is right outside of the hustle and bustle of the main streets. A very short walk brings you to the main drag where the market stalls and shops are.

I do enjoy the ban on motor vehicles in the town. Neighboring towns have done the same. If one needs to get from one town to the next fast there are waypoints.

We are in the thick of the market now. Two story tall buildings line the wide brick streets. There are vendors by their carts with pumpkins, breads and spiced goodies everywhere. Some vendors even have costumes others offering decorations.

Samantha is still trying to take in all the different races that live and work here together. She and I come from a mostly all human world just from different parts. The other species are in hiding so they don't get completely stamped out.

My eyes catch a glimpse of a top less werewolf. Fluffy. Don't touch just look. But don't look too long. Must advert eyes.

"Have you ever tried spiced cake?" I ask Samantha. Walking over to a vendor.

"Probably not." She shyly walks up beside me.

Shock! When will I not be shocked for her past sheltered lifestyle?

I get us the spice cake for after lunch. Wait. It's already after lunch. Whoops.

"Have you ate lunch?" I ask while we try walking together down the busy street. Ooo that's a nicely hung spider web.

No! Don't stare.

"Yea I did eat while you were in the shower." She says quietly.

"Oh. Then how about we stop at the Cafe after the tailor's shop and get some drinks to go with the cake?" I ask.

"Sure." She agrees almost automatically.

Being only 15 and not being given choices growing up she just goes with the flow of things. Even if she doesn't want to.

"You know you can say the word 'no' here. I'm a big girl. I can handle it." I remind her.

"I-i do want to go because you like the place and I noticed they added hot chocolate to the menu the other day..." She trails off.

"Hot chocolate does sound good with the weather cooling off." I take a look around.

Ha! Someone has a skeleton hanging from their window like it is falling from putting the decorations up around their window. Clever.

Gah! Don't smile. I felt it creeping up. What would everyone think of me acting like a little kid?

I look over to see a fluffy werewolf! I tear my eyes off of him.

I see the tailor shop only a few shops down. I can make it.

We made it without me diving my head into a fluffy werewolf. Yes!

Don't squeal. Don't squeal. Don't squeal.

Inner squeal! Why are all the costumes so cute!?!

Devious she-devils, velvet vampire dresses, pretty pink princess dresses, feathered flamingo... wait. Flamingo?

My gaze apparently stayed too long.

"How do you like that custome order?" Sally the seamstress asked with a huge smile on her face.

"It's... unique." Is the nicest thing I could say about it. The craftsmanship was beautiful. Hands down beautiful. But a flamingo? Who would want to dress as a pink bird?

"I can't wait to see their face when they come pick it up!" Sally was beaming with pride from her work.

"I hope they like it." I reply.

"What you looking for?" Sally asks Samantha and I.

I look at Samantha. With my eyes I gesture that she needs to be the one talking.

"Um. I need a costume for the festival." She stammers a little.

"Look no farther. Something here is bound to make you stunning for the festival." Sally takes off with Samantha.

"Remember she is a minor!" I yell over the costume rack.

A brown pair of cat ears caught my eye.

Ooo. Those match my hair color.
