Chapter 1:

The word is out

Sugar Rush before the Sweet Nightmares

I woke up in my house to the sound of my trainee dropping something in the kitchen. I could barely hear her panicking voice talking to herself while picking the pot up and trying to be as quiet as she could.

I roll out of bed. I look at the mid day sun peeking through my lacey curtains. Never have been a morning person.

I make my way out my bedroom and try to head to the bathroom.

"I'm sorry!" My trainee Samantha said.

"It's fine as long as you make me breakfast." I say dragging my feet down the hall. I should shower to wake up.

After a nice shower I walk out to find Samantha had made an egg, ham and cheese bagel for me. She can't cook much outside of breakfast foods and pasta. I have learned she can not bake with how often the house is filled with smoke. It's a once a week occurrence.

"Thank you." I tell her sitting at the kitchen table. It is nice to have food cooked at home. Before I started training her I ate out all the time. Or went without when I was too tired to get out of bed.

"You're welcome." She says. She starts to squirm a little bit. She does this when she wants to say something but doesn't know if it's alright for her to speak.

"Whacha thinking?" I say before biting into the sandwich.

"I have noticed the streets are decorated here and there with spiders, skeletons, pumpkins, lamps and a lot of other things. Also the werewolfs seem to have less... clothing on than normal." She shyly says as if it was her fault she saw their chest and tummy fur.

"Ahh that's right. This town goes all out thanks to pretty much everyone is or is related to someone supernatural." I tell her calmy even though I'm beginning to fan girl inside.

It's Halloween time finally! There are a few houses that I just have to walk by to admire their decorations. Every year they change it up on what they make their fake skeletons do. I hope Matilda enchanted some candles and pumpkins outside her shop so they float. I love seeing those when she does the black, red and orange candles. Oh Tilly makes some fabric bats flutter around her place. I have to go see them when she gets them out. I wonder what armor Chelsea will slap onto her fake skeleton.

Hopefully this year I can still have the self control of not burying my face into a werewolf's oh so soft tummy hair. Why must they prance around flaunting their fluffiness?

I haven't really dressed up before even though I really really want to. But what should I dress as? Pirate? Mummy? Princess? Nah scratch that one. A meif'wa would be cute. But what color?

Oh I need to get candy for the little goblins people call children.

"Hazel?"

Candy.... Candied apples have been my favorite since I was young. They are so hard to eat sometimes and I don't want to embarrass myself infront of the few friends I do have.

"Hazel?"

I wonder when the festival will be this year. What day is it anyway? How many days do I have to wait for the street food to be festive?

"Hazel! Someone is at the door." Samantha's voice finally grabs my attention. The door bell sounds.

"Alright." I say getting up. At least she doesn't just open the door. Yes the town is safe because of the spell cased over the whole thing we're you physically can not lift a weapon to harm people. Same goes with potions, kitchen utensils, farm tools and fists. Ever seen a bar fight where no one can throw a punch so they try throwing their bodies just to be bounced around. By the end people are usually laughing so hard at each other's faces as they get whipped around that they become drinking buddies. The old timers like placing bets on the out of town folk when a fight tries to break out.

Anyway we mostly don't answer the door because someone is trying to sell something I don't want or it's someone I don't want to talk to.

I look at the glass globe that lets me see whats outside my iron door. Oh look it's someone I don't want to talk to. James. He flirts with all the girls. Why is he on my doorstep? He leans his forearm above his head on the door.

"I know you're in there Hazel." James says through the door. His voice is so smooth and fairly deep.

I wonder if it's too late to sneak out the back.

"I wanted to ask if you want to go to the festival together in 2 weeks." James pauses. "Well I guess I will see you around." He starts to move away from the door with his dark hair shining in the sun.

I want to go but not with him per say.

"Stop being a creep." I say into the globe.

"Stop being a recluse." He says over his shoulder. A smile dancing on his lips while his facial hair trimmed enough to accent his facial structure so nicely. His brown eyes almost looks sincere.

I look over at my trainee.

"You like festivals?" I ask her.

"I haven't been to one." She replies.

"WHAT?!" I kinda saw it coming with her being a bit of a bumpkin but still a shocker. "Alright. We are going to one in two weeks. Let's get ready."
