Chapter 4:
Sugar Rush before the Sweet Nightmares
We make our way out of the shop onto the bustling street. She has the cake bag while I carry the costumes. It's a dark paper bag and I may or may not have a death grip on the top so no one will peek inside.
Samantha starts to browse at some carts with squash. I try to keep my gaze wondering so no one will question why I'm staring at the cute decorations.
"Can I look at a few things?" She asks.
"Sure. I will do some window shopping too." I reply.
I come to a cart with spooky looking books. I don't recognize the vendor so they must be out of town. I grab enough coin for the one book from my pants pocket and make the trade. Shoving the newly bought book into my bag quickly so I can keep a move on.
I keep moving and looking at everything.
Until I come across some black lacey knit curtains. Not just any black lacey knit curtains. They had cat shapes knitted into it. Some walking on fences others by pumpkins. A few sitting next to a witch as their familiar.
I want them.
I really really want them.
I take a look around to see if anyone is watching.
"How much?" I point to the curtains.
"Fifty coin." The vendor smiled. "It's quiet the deal."
Yes and no on the deal. Hand knit yes but magically made ehh.
I still end up buying them. I requested a paper bag.
"What happened to window shopping?" I could hear the smirk in Samantha's voice as I grab the bag then turn to face her.
She has a crate full of squash and gourds with the cake perched on top of it all.
"What happened to you just looking at a few things?" I reply to her taking the cake.
"I haven't tried this squash and this one I remember it tasting good back home." She uses her thumbs to point at the squash. "And gourds can be cute decorations. And we can plant the seeds next year."
"Always looking a head." I chuckle. "Should we try to make it to the Cafe?"
"I might need to set these down there." Adjusting the weight in her hands.
"We can sit in the outside seating area and I will go up to get our drinks."
We make our way to the Cafe and made it as a small table was opening up.
"Oh sweet." I set my stuff down making sure the bags are sealed as I leave Samantha to guard the table.
The spooky atmosphere in the Cafe was in full swing. The cashier had the manual register covered in little spiders and cob webs. The hats got changed to witches/wizard hats. A few exclusive drinks have come back ending with the word brew.
I get myself a pumpkin latte. It should pair alright with the spiced cake right? And I got Samantha a large hot chocolate. Not sure how that will taste with the cake.
I will have to come back and try the special flavors.
I get back to our table and set the hot chocolate down on the table between the clearly upset Samantha and some guy that was trying to talk to her.
"I got your drink." I say ignoring the guy.
He starts to stammer for me to butt out but he must have recognized who I was and backed off slowly before bolting.
"Thanks." Samantha said In a whisper.
"You can tell them no." I say.
"I-i tried." She stammers.
"One day you'll get there. Now let me carry this." I picked the drink back up and put it in the holder. I grabbed the other 3 bags while Samantha carried the crate. She lived on a small "hobby" farm but she has more stamina carrying things than a good chunk of the young men around here. Not to mentioned she was the one to purchase them.
Once home she places the gourds around one side of the wooden steps that leads to the front door.
"Looks good." I tell her.
"Thanks!" She says happily.
After setting our stuff down we get plates, silverware and our drinks around on the table. In the center is the poor cake that might not live to see tomorrow.
I hear rustling outside the door.
"Trash panada is back!" Samantha says quite loudly.
I bolt to the door and try to step down on a step only for my foot to find a gourd and I land on my back side. I find myself hanging onto the railing with one hand so the blow wasn't bad. But gosh my tail bone.
Then I see the trash panda scurring across the road with a gourd in it's mouth.
Over head I hear a squirrel chattering as if laughing at me.
"Get out of here!" I chuck a gourd at the thing. Just missing it.
"Maybe the gourds can be an indoor decoration?" Samantha says shyly with her nose and eyes poking outside the door.
"They can go on the coffee table." I lay on steps for a minute to let the pain subside.
