Chapter 6:
Sugar Rush before the Sweet Nightmares
You know what? I think to myself. Sitting back putting my book down next to my empty plate and cup. The sun is beginning to set.
I could go out in disguise to buy more candy for the goblins. I mean children. I'm sure the candy guy wouldn't mind me personally buying that much candy but I don't really want to be seen.
People know I have a magical bowl outside my house so they can only get their fair share of candy.
But I have extra coin.
Due to not eating out excessively. And the costumes were cheap.
The goblins could get extra candy this year. Or I could have a bit left over for winter....
One year I didn't have candy because Aba sent me on a full month. A FULL MONTH out of town job that brought me back after the candy was clearanced out. By that time everyone had moved onto the fall harvest festival.
I was not pleased.
He only chuckled when I expressed my grievances.
The mission was rewarding though. It got my name out there for people to request my hunting skills.
But! I put my palms onto the table. I'm deciding I'm going out candy shopping!
I unload my bags leaving Samantha's things on the counter. I hurry into my room and change into another set of clothes and my Meif'wa ears and tail. I throw a cloak over my ears and shoulders.
The ears flopped and sprung the headband back. Alright.
I put some Bobby pins in my hair to secure the headband. This time it worked.
I paint a little brown foundation on and drew on some whiskers. Then got carried away with stripes....
I spin to make sure the tail is a little noticeable. I should wear gloves to hide I don't have sharp cat nails.
I make my way to the kitchen counter. This will never work. No one would believe I'm a Meif'wa.
"Are you one of Hazel's friends?" Asks Samantha taking a sip of water.
What? When? How did her stealth get so high?!
I look to her and slowly nod my head so my cloak wouldn't reveal my face.
"That's good. She doesn't have many friends. I get concerned for her." She looks sadly at her water cup. "Well! Have fun!" She quietly walks to her bedroom door.
I could have been a robber and this girl would have no idea. Anyway I will address this later. I have candy to retrieve.
I make my way out the front door swiftly and quietly into the night. Carefully making my way to the store that sells candy. The streets are a little busy ramping up for the festival in 2 weeks.
I pop into the store. I do know the owner he will recognize my voice. Wow I thought nothing through.
"What can I get for you?" The heavy set man smiles leaning on the counter.
I gestured for some paper and ink. He chuckles and gladly gets me some. I wrote out everything I wanted.
4 pounds of little chocolate bars
4 pounds of the multi-flavored chewy candy
1 pound of Carmel filled chocolate ones
2 pounds of the really sour ones
3 pounds of your best seller
Please and thank you!
"Wow you might buy me out of candy. Let's see what I got." He smiles and starts whistling while scooping the candy.
He seems nervous and he is in the right a hooded figure is in his shop.
"You good if I substitute if I'm a pound short?" He asks.
I raise my hand with my thumb up to tell him to keep going. I did think a head and brought my almost bottomless bag that makes things light. Due to I knew I was asking the man for 14 pounds worth of candy.
He bags it all up and rings up his register.
"Total is 1,094 pieces of gold." He says a little nervous.
I slap my gold bag on the counter and the spell takes effect giving him his money and then a tip. Such kind service for a "stranger". I bow shoving the candy in my bag and take off out the door.
"Have a nice night!" He calls out after me.
I make my way back home trying to avoid people.
"Well. Hello there." I hear James voice. I freeze.
Oh no. Oh no....
"What's a fine feline like yourself doing out late at night? Good little kitties go home at night. Unless....." He positions himself in front of me. "Are you a naughty kitty?" He whispers in my cat ears.
Don't punch him. Don't punch him.
I keep my hood down and try to side step him.
"Not so fast. I can walk you home." He says grabbing my wrist. I try to fling him off but my cloak slips and my hood fell down.
Lucky me I was standing under a street lamp so he saw my hair a mess and possibly how red my real ears were. Along with the tears welling up in my eyes from embarrassment. Not to mention the paint I put on my face.
"H-hazel?" He stammers letting go of my wrist. "I'm."
I bolt before he could get anything else out.
I run for home.
"Hazel! Slow down let's talk!" He says chasing after me. Damn I forgot he was fast.
I throw my hood back on and weave through the shadows.
"Still here." This time he is next to me.
I stop and face him with my face hidden.
"So what's with the get up?" He asks with a smile.
