Chapter 12:
Sugar Rush before the Sweet Nightmares
The two short weeks that led up to the festival flew by. I went to James' house every other night for hand to hand combat training. I'm starting to win rounds against him by putting him in head locks. We tend to linger on my front porch longer each night he walked me home. He doesn't seem to be the player I thought he was.
I never did find his costume in the house though. Yet he did say he would find me at the festival. Who knows.
It's getting close to evening I should set up the candy bowl. I drag the candy bowl and it's stand from the shed out back to the front porch. I charge the stand with mana so the candy will be dispensed as the kids step up to it. I pour twelve pounds of candy into the bowl and stand. Should be enough right? Now to test it. Right now the bowl is empty. I step up to it for it to react to me. It dispenses some candy. Yay it works! I step back and up again to see if it recognizes the same person a second time. No candy. Alright now to have Samantha test it.
I drag Samantha out from the kitchen and have her walk up to the bowl. Candy comes out. Alright it works!
"I'm taking these because you dragged me out here." Samantha says taking off with the candy that was dispensed.
"Fine with me. Thanks for being a guinea pig."
We head inside and I help her with the make up so now we both look like Meif'wa. And I help her do her hair. Why must she have such thick hair? She could do so much with it but no she always runs around with it in a ponytail.
"Your ears should have a button on them. If you press it a spell will take place and hide your real ears." I inform her.
She does this and her face lights up.
"Woooah that's so cool!" Then she realized I was moving my tail.
Watching her spin for a second to figure out how to move hers was pretty comical.
I check on my orb that lets me see outside my door and some goblins are already coming up for the candy. I see the goblin candy trap is working.
"Ready to head out?" I ask Samantha.
"Yea I think I'm good." She says. Her hair is curled and down. She has on a light blue t-shirt, a black choker, a grey zip up sweatshirt that's only part way zipped, jeans and her round toe cowboy boots. Then the ears and tail.
I have a white long sleeve kinda puffy shirt that has no shoulders, a black choker, my lace up boots and my nice black leather pants. Do I wear leather a lot? Yes. Yes I do. Why? Because I look good in it and it protects my legs when I'm in a fight.
We make our way to the festival in town. The streets are lit up with floating candles, paper lamps and pumpkins. The smell of greasy street food and sweet sugar mix together in a pleasant aroma. Everyone is in costumes of some sort and most people are smiling unless their "persona" they are dressed as is a grouch.
I see cotton candy and so many fried foods on sticks. I must pace myself.
I get Samantha and I some teriyaki beef on a stick while we wonder around the stalls.
"Those girls are from my classes." Samantha comments.
I look over and there are three girls all dressed as fairies. With colorful wigs and wings. Samantha waves to them and they dash on over to us.
"Oh M G! Thank you again for the save last week. I would've missed this festival and would totes be crying all night." The pink haired one said.
"You know we would have stayed with you in the hospital." The blue haired one said.
"Like you two could pull off this kind of a magic show." The pink wigged girl gestured to the festival in general.
"Hey girl! Do you have plans tonight?" The green haired one cheerfully asked Samantha.
"Um." Samantha looks at me. I'm a little lost but I do remember Samantha telling me a story that the class went into the field and she fought off another hoard of zombies. Now I'm assuming she helped the pink haired girl not get injured.
"You're good to go have fun. Be back home by midnight." I tell her and the girls.
"Yay!" The trio squeals and takes off with Samantha. Was that terror or joy in her eyes? Eh I will find out later.
Now my self control is going to be horrible unless I find a friend.
I see Matilda. Dressed in her cloak as always. I make my way to her.
"I see someone is festive tonight." I joke with her.
"Thanks I was hoping someone would notice them." She lifts her hood a little and I see she has some horns on. Well I got saved there.
We walk the streets enjoying the street food. Every so often Matilda would hold onto me while we go through a narrow walk way. We walk past Chelsea's shop and I see she has her fake skeleton in a toga, olive branch head dress and a spear. Pretty nifty.
Chelsea finds us and joins the group. She is dressed in a toga too. Not long after Tilly finds us and she has wolf ears and a tail on. The four of us make our way through the main street having fun with games, food and talking. Chelsea is feeling the potions effects though.
I eye a candied apple. That looks really good.
"Is that a guy dressed as a flamingo?" Chelsea asks us. We all look around and this flamingo is no where to be seen.
"Sounds like someone needs to go home for the night." Tilly laughs hanging onto Chelsea.
"Looks like I'm taking these two home for the night." Matilda says.
"I will help you." I say.
"Nah I'm good. I think there is someone here looking for you anyways." She winks before whisking the two away with her magic.
Wait. How? Then I remembered her touching my arm. That little! I stomp my foot.
"Good evening feisty kitty." I hear the low smooth honey voice I have been enjoying for the last two weeks. I turn to look at James.
Well I thought it was James. There stood before me was a very large flamingo.
"You're an embarrassment to nature." I tell him.
"Hey I paid good money for this and Sally did a wonderful job!" He spins.
"I'm going to walk away." I tell him.
He jumps in front of me.
"You know some birds dance to attract mates right?" He poses one hand by his head and the other on his hip. My face is burning. This is beyond embarrassing.
"Please don't." I try walking away.
"I won't dance if you agree to spend some time with me." He blackmails me.
"You're a cruel man." I tell him. I'm in his trap but I think I could make a run for it.
"And no running or I will be dancing in your front yard all night long." He points at me.
"I will kick your butt if you do that."
"That sounds like fun actually." He leans in and raises his brows twice quickly.
"You know what. I'm going to pluck all the feathers from you." I leap towards him.
"Hey! No!" He says taking off in a jog down an ally and I follow after him.
