Chapter 8:

I’m Fallin’ Up; I’m Fallin–

Chaos! At the Halloween Festival

You know, I’m getting a terrible sense of deja vu.

“Agh!” My hands slammed against one of the floating classrooms passing by, but I was prepared. I reached my hand out, trying to grab one of the protrusions. At first, it seemed like a difficult rock-climbing course – I could barely latch on. But then, I finally found one that was deep enough to jam my–

“Whoa!” The building suddenly made a sharp turn in the worst direction, easily shaking me off. It was the third time! My hands were already starting to turn purple.

The entire place was basically a giant tornado. With everything zipping past, I couldn’t keep track of where I was. My body wouldn’t stop spinning, which made me more nauseous by the minute. There wasn’t even anything I could do – there was no mana to disenchant. It was as if the safeguard was put in place in case of something like this. Why is this school never normal about anything?!?

I had no time to think about the Magic Research Club; my own life came first. Maybe something in the–

“Ugh!” My back smacked into another classroom, knocking the air out of my lungs. It was already hard enough to breathe! I wasn't even able to make an attempt this time.

The wind rocketed me to another location, causing my head to spin. The once smeared objects turned even more blurry. Did I have a concussion? I didn’t know, but given what I just saw, I had to be hallucinating.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a man jumping from classroom to classroom. Under one of his arms was a member of the Magic Research Club – unconscious, of course, but safe. The other held a broom that seemed to pass in-between his legs as he ran. If he was real, I would imagine he would be part of the Track and Field Team–wait.

I may be hearing things, but is that…?

STOMP! STOMP! STOMP! STOMP! STOMP! STOMP! STOMP! STOMP!

Drowning out the whispering wind was a smattering of footsteps. It was hard to catch a clear view, but there were too many to miss. A tidal wave took over the tornado in an instant – running, jumping, and grabbing the people flying around outside. Guiding them were a host of blue orbs whizzing about. I couldn’t pretend it was fake any longer.

The Track and Field team had come to the rescue. And, for some reason, they were running with brooms between their legs.

I had about a thousand questions. Were they trying to go for a witch or warlock theme? The Potions Club already covered that! Sure, pumpkins and witches were the first thing I would think up for Halloween, but come on. They could at least be a bit more original! Their clothes were still the same tang top and shorts as the last time I saw them. Did someone just give them brooms and go ‘Good Luck!’? It wasn’t being used at all!

“Urk!” I bumped into another building. But unlike before, my back was stuck against something. Feeling around with my hand, I finally managed to grab onto something. An air conditioner… maybe? Whatever, as long as I wasn’t spinning – I was this close to hurling my lungs.

From here, as much as I loathed to admit, waiting until one of the jocks came was my best option. If they’re assisted by the blue orbs, it should be fine. 2-1 was the current score, not that there was anything else to bet on.

I readjusted my grip, trying to get a better handle. Compared to the flailing, I was constantly getting battered against the rooftop from a slight change in movement. Staying conscious was starting to become a real challenge, but if I let go, who knew where I’d end up. Getting smooshed by a building was not on my bucket list.

After what felt like an eternity, a red orb finally appeared in front of me. Wait, red? I’d rather have a blue one. It seemed to be panicking, flying around in a circle around my head.

Did this mean something was–
