Chapter 238:
En Passant Grandmaster
Daria stared at the card for a bit before taking a deep breath and moving her pawn to e5.
"So Marianne, you ever play chess?" Mari sneered as she moved her knight to f3.
"I have, actually," Daria stated as she moved her knight to c6.
"Hmm, and let me see... Huh? The hell isn't your data showing up?"
"Likely because you're in a match, so care to move?"
Mari scowled and slammed her pawn down on b5. This was the Ruy López opening, one of the most strong openings out there.
"Seems she might truly be an executive board member. I remember when we played each other in the qualifiers, she put up a good fight, but ultimately blundered in the endgame. Worse, she's probably confident that if we draw, she'll be able to resume her torture again. In that case, I'll go all out with the Berlin," Daria thought as she moved her knight to f6.
The Ruy López Opening: Berlin Defense was infamous in the fact that it more than often led to drawn games. This was especially true at the top level, however, that was only if the players played well. Though as soon as Mari castled king's side, Daria knew things were going to be a slog.
"The Ruy López Opening: Berlin, l'Hermet, Berlin Wall Defense, that's what she's going for. And if she's got the skill of a 2900-rated player this truly will be a slog," Daria thought as she captured the pawn at e4 with her knight.
Just as predicted, d4, knight d6, bishop captures c6, d captures c6, d captures e5, knight f5 and finally...
"Check!" Mari sneered as she captured the queen at d8 with her queen.
Now Daria was left with no other legal move but to capture the queen at d8 with her king, which she did so with an annoyed scowl.
"My, why the scowl? I'm being quite merciful offering a draw like this," Mari sneered as she moved her knight to c3.
"And when this is drawn, I'm not going to be able to move again, yes?" Daria scowled as she moved her bishop to d7.
"That's right. We gave you a dose of immobilization serum, so once the game ends, down you go," Mari sneered as she moved her pawn to g4.
"In that case being cured from this "immobilization serum" and gaining immunity to it will be added to my winning conditions," Daria glared as she moved her knight to e7.
"H- Hold on! You can't just make new wagers 10 moves into a match!" Mari fumed as she moved her knight to d2.
"What does your DESPER say then?" Daria smirked as she captured the pawn at g4 with her bishop.
"How should I know!? I don't have a DESPER, YOU do!" Mari fumed as she slammed her knight down on c4.
Now confidence began to flood into Daria as she stared at the board. Mari had blundered big time, and now, Daria could afford to press.
"So are you REALLY part of the executive governing board?" she snickered as she moved her king to c8.
"Um, yeah? I'm the headmaster of the school!" Mari scoffed as she moved her knight to e3.
"Not that executive board, the WWCF's executive board," Daria clarified as she moved her bishop to h3.
Mari scowled in confusion and moved her rook to e1, yet that reaction only prompted Daria to press the issue further.
"Your rating is 2990, and your WWCF card is purple. That signifies your position on the executive board," Daria stated as she moved her knight to g6.
"Wh- What are you talking about!?" Mari fumed as she moved her knight to g4.
The move caused Daria to scowl. "That was quite the blunder. Tell me, is your rating fabricated?" she glared as she captured the free knight at g4.
Sweat began to pour down Mari's face as she turned to Bashame for help. However, Bashame was just as nervous as her as she stood in place, nervously biting her lip.
"Well, care to explain? I am aware those chips you executive board members have in your brains can malfunction, but this level of play is like that of a 900-level player. Hmm, could your original rating perhaps be-"
"I AM ELITE! I'M MARI SUOU, THE MARY SUE! YOU CAN'T BEAT ME!" Mari shouted as she slammed her bishop down on e3.
"And you intend to win this how?" Daria glared as she moved her pawn to b6.
Color began fading from Mari's face as she desperately moved her e-rook to b1. Daria continued to tighten the screws and captured the pawn on e5 with her knight. Now unable to think rationally and starting to hit time trouble, Mari desperately moved her bishop to g5. Allowing Daria the opportunity for a for by moving her knight to f3. This prompted Mari to move her king to g2, and allowed Daria to snatch up the bishop at g5.
"Th- This is wrong! YOU must be cheating!" Mari shuddered as she moved her king to g3
"That's rich," Daria glared as she moved her bishop to f3
"No, it's true! You HAVE to be cheating! I'm elite! I'm THE Mary Sue! It's the whole damn reason I changed my name to "Mari" in the first place!" Mari shouted as she slammed her king down on f4.
"Oh? And your original name would be?" Daria snickered as she moved her pawn to h6.
"NOT TELLING!" Mari fumed as she slammed her king down on e5.
"Well, I'll find out eventually," Daria shrugged as she moved her knight to e6.
"You think you can threaten me!? I'm Mari Suou! I'll have your head on a platter like that damn ninja girl!" Mari shouted as she slammed her pawn down on b3.
"And I'm someone far more powerful and better at chess. Check, mate in one," Daria declared as she moved her bishop to d6.
Mari trembled like crazy as she was forced to move her king to f5. "N- No way. You can't mate the king here... AH! Isn't there some rule where you lose if you declare mate in something but it doesn't happen!? Then you lose!"
"No, the WWCF abolished that rule. And it doesn't even matter in this case since this, is checkmate," Daria stated as she moved her knight to d4, winning the game.
Mari stared at the position and desperately tried to move her king, but she couldn't and the board vanished instantly. Daria was able to move again, however, Mari still remained.
"Seems your punishment failed! Well time for punishment for daring to cheat on me!" Mari fumed as she lunged at Daria.
Now free, Daria effortlessly countered Mari, downing her to the floor. Bashame then charged, but instead of going for Daria, grabbed Mari and began running off with her.
"Bashame! Unhand me!"
"No! We gotta run, Mari. Prokrutka's gonna come!"
"Prokrut-who!?"
Bashame didn't bother answering and leapt into the water with Mari, desperately swimming away as Daria watched. Just as Bashame stated, Prokrutka would likely hunt hem down, allowing Daria to focus on her original mission.
Daria turned her attention to Doraaki and smiled. "Sorry for the delay, but I'm here to rescue you."
"Uh, who are you exactly?"
"Ah my apologies, still in undercover mode. Well, this will tell you all," Daria smiled as she flashed her WWCF card.
