The airport smelled of coffee, the beverage with the psychoactive stimulant substance, as I'm sure everyone knows, caffeine. I definitely enjoy coffee, especially this early of a morning, so naturally I find myself drawn to a cafe booth. I sip on my drink as I think back on the experiences of my life. I've lost touch with so many people over the years, and I'm usually on my own throughout my life, Oliver, the person I used to be.
I board my plane with an unshakable expression of determination, as I wait hour by hour. The wait reaches its peak as we board off and arrive at The Mongolian International Airport. Mountainscapes surround me with great force, towering over hundreds of times more than I could ever tower back. The cracked desert landscape, dried up and thirsty, is most of what I can see surrounding me. I'm looking to head south, the great Gobi desert is what I'm looking for.
I've decided to head there with the help of a local I met online, Erdene. Erdene has told me of the times that he has gone there by himself, he’s even caught glimpses of a creature, so he says, but one he cannot speak the name of as to not bring bad luck to my travels, i'm not bothered though. This is a challenge that I'm willing to venture into, we might even find something interesting, such as an object, or something more.
Erdene lives in Dalanzadgad, a city not far from the Gobi landscape with a population of 24,000. He has been going to the desert since he was a child, and knows how not to get lost in the swallowing seas of sand, as well as the preparations that are needed. Erdene is always welcoming of tourists like myself that are looking for a challenge, and gets them there. He has been waiting to pick me up from the airport in his travel vehicle with everything needed for the trip, and I'm of course taking the opportunity to try the traditional Mongolian food.
