A good idea with mixed execution

Apocalypse Punk is a conceptually cool story that finds itself faltering a fair bit. While the characters, world and story are all interesting and fun in theory, there are aspects that aren't quite explored enough for me to unilaterally call it great.

The protagonist, Vanessa, works as a microcosm of this problem. She has a fun personality, an interesting backstory, a good character motivation and a clear direction throughout the story. As such, she makes a very enjoyable protagonist to read. However, she only develops to a very surface-level degree, her backstory is only really touched upon (which is certainly something that could be easily rectified with a second volume) and the personality that makes her so fun can also become frustrating at times, between making bad decisions and mistreating other characters in ways that can become quite annoying.

All of this to say, Apocalypse Punk is not a bad story. It does many things well and is an interesting read from start to finish. But it needs more polish before it can be elevated from "good" to "great"
