Born to a far-flung future, Eitch is one of thirteen humans left alive.
Kept alive, specifically, for reasons unknown -- by a superintelligent AI who runs the remainder of the world.

A tasteless grey world, punctuated by tasteless grey meals, alongside tasteless, grey people.
Eitch doesn't understand the concept of giving up, mostly because there isn't anything to give up on in the first place.

So all of a sudden when a girl claiming magic powers comes crashing down literally from the sky, Eitch's world is turned upside-down -- as an entire other world comes crashing into his life.
