Before you even read this, just know that Piracy In Another World is an amazing isekai novel with a solid premise that deserves your time, attention, and praise. Definitely give it a go if you take away nothing else from this review.
Okay, now I shall start gushing over it, starting with the heart of this entire adventure: Kaito/Lark. He's an amazing and haunted soul that like a lot of isekai protagonists didn't have a very good life in the previous world. However, unlike most isekai protagonists, Kaito/Lark is actually likable! He's not one-note, he's multi-faceted, and he has a genuine charm that will sweep you off your feet. He's also the first guy I've crushed on in years when it comes to fiction, so beware lest you get swept up with his charm as well.
The supporting cast is nothing to scoff at either. They're all charming in their own little ways. Each of them adds to the atmosphere of camaraderie and thinly veiled attraction, and are all appealing. Just like Kaito/Lark, they aren't just caricatures, but they're like actual people. I won't spoil anything, but I will say that I can easily see any of them being someone's favorite character.
The world also feels alive despite not lingering too much on what's going on outside of run-ins from time to time. Things are moving in the background separate from Lark's adventure, and you can sense that while he's important to this story, things are happening without his direct influence. It's definitely something that adds to the robustness of the atmosphere.
I have nothing bad to say about it that I can think of unless it's from the lens of someone actively trying to find something to dislike (which I'm not). This story does just about everything very well. Ash did an amazing job making this story and there's no real issue with polish or prose. It's not super deep or philosophical, but this story doesn't need to be that.
To sum it up, I beg of you to give this a go if you appreciate the isekai genre in any capacity. It has the tropes but without the downfalls and repetitions that make other ones stale. I enjoyed every moment I spent reading this.
5/5 Stars. And I look forward to reading more once it comes out.
