This is the first story I read to completion after joining Honeyfeed, and what a ride it was. Initially, the cover image and title drew me in, and the first chapter already showed the amazing penmanship and powerful prose the writer maintains throughout the whole story. Then the world and character building truly began, and I was hooked.
Creating a fantasy world outside of the one we know is fundamental to isekai, but this writer goes beyond that; together with Tomita and Izhari we travel to worlds and settings that defy imagination, yet we can picture them clearly through colorful or downright grotesque descriptions. It was a journey that I willingly joined, despite the hardships, cruelty and exhaustion I could feel in their bones and mine.
I initially endeared myself to Tomita, recognizing with great amusement and schadenfreude his plight as Japanese salaryman. I didn’t expect to fall in love with Izhari as much as I did. The two of them share incredible painful pasts, and honestly I usually despise depressed characters with too much baggage; but their pains are real. They make sense. I began to get to know and understand them, and started rooting for them. Not once did I find their descriptions too much “Oh woe is me!” and actually celebrated their first accomplishments of finding happiness with each other.
And whew, the first time they share their burdens? Sensual. Steamy. In a way that makes you blush and think “this should not be that sexy but it is”.
I would offer notes of improvement but I barely have any. Perhaps the amount of exclamation marks during the final battle is a bit much, but at that point I was so hooked I honestly did not even care. It read like a manga-chapter, with full-page spreads of the characters building power and unleashing their wrath (spoiler?) so it seemed fitting.
Finally, I have a silly joke I came up with in the bath yesterday and I apologize in advance.
Q: If Tomita is Izhari’s “imp loyee”, then she is his…?
A: Man Ager.
Sorry! (Not really though).
