Arian Crante has had a less-than-fortunate life, plagued by health problems, financial difficulties, and other challenges, but it's a life he's grateful to have... lived. As a sudden heart attack strikes him in the night, however, instead of being greeted by pearly gates or eternal fire or even a black void, he is met face to face with Theia, the goddess of light and fortune.

She promises him all his troubles to be resolved if only he manages to save the world of Renovare from the King of Corruption, who has fallen countless heroes before him. Not that he has much of a choice in the matter, as she hastily forces him to take a divine treasure and sends him down.
